Infrared LEDs are frequently used for communications. A TV remote control is one typical example.

Aside from the possible application in remote control, maybe you can use the infra red LED for beam interruption, like for limit switch? Obstruction sensor is possible, by measuring the amount of light reflected by an obstructing object. However, I doubt you will get an accurate result.
