Robotics are currently used for a variety of purposes, to a large extent by government agencies.
NASA: Nasa uses robots to travel our solar system, currently there is a robotic spacecraft, New Horizons, headed towards Pluto in order to study it and send data back to Earth using radio waves.
DOD: The DOD and the military as a whole are interested in robotics. The military has already made as much as 1/3 of its operations unmanned and robot based. This is a good thing as a transition to robot-based warfare is going to save many human lives.
Androids: In Japan there is not a large enough base of Youth and young people, therefore they are constructing robots such as Asimo, these new robots may sere as the future work force, performing all menial tasks like production, transportation, and distribution that require a lot of energy from people.
Nanoprobes: Robotic nanotechnology will soon revolutionize medicine so that many diseases, aging, suffering, and other flaws will become optional as there will be robots small enough to fit into your body and to filter out your cells.
