ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A Touch review: new touchscreen, same solid performance
While Windows 8 inspired lots of insane brand-new form factors, it additionally provided notebook makers a good reason to circle back and modify their tried-and-true items to bring them into the touch-optimized age. One instance is ASUS’ Zenbook Prime line of Ultrabooks. We have actually seen several of them in the last year; the UX31A landed in our workplaces last summer, and we assessed the 15-inch UX51Vz mere weeks ago.
But a dry spell is nowhere in sight: ASUS simply launched an additional 13-inch Zenbook, the $ 1,099-and-up UX31A Touch. The name says it all: it’s the UX31A we’ve understood and, er, liked, however with a capacitive display included in. Obviously, this somewhat various version still provides an opportunity to improve the laptop in other ways (for example, we thought the UX31A included a subpar touchpad). So, does this brand-new touchscreen model surpass a currently carefully crafted Ultrabook? Jump past the break to locate out.

Asus Zenbook Prime ultrabooks on sale at Amazon from $1,149.99

The elusive UX31A Zenbook Prime appears to have gone on sale without any official launch fanfare from Asus. Amazon is directly selling the ultrabook right now, with a 1.7GHz Core i5 model selling for $ 1,149.99 and a 1.7GHz Core i7 model at $ 1,349.99. Both models have a 13.3-inch 1080p IPS display, 128GB SSD, Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4GB RAM, and a backlit keyboard. If those Intel graphics are a sticking point, there’s also a $ 1,299 i7 option that includes an Nvidia GT 620M card — you’ll have to forego the 128GB SSD for a 500GB 7200rpm hard drive, though. This is the UX32VD model we saw in non-bootable prototype form last month.
It looks like stock is running pretty low, with wait times of 8 to 9 days for the i5 and Nvidia models, but…

Hands-on with a touchscreen Asus Zenbook Prime

We’re still waiting for the Zenbook Prime UX21A to see a full release, but Asus has already prepared another variant for show here at Computex Taipei — a Windows 8 model equipped with a touchscreen. The company told us it’s being “considered for production” right now, so we’re not sure if it’ll ever find a place in Asus’s extensive Windows 8 lineup, but we came away impressed from our brief session with the ultrabook.
Touch response was excellent, and the hinge doesn’t wobble under pressure from taps like the Samsung prototypes we saw yesterday. We’re still yet to be fully convinced by the touchscreen clamshell form factor, whatever Intel might say, but there’s no denying it feels a lot more natural on such a compact machine. Beyond…

Asus Zenbook UX31A and UX21A coming soon with Ivy Bridge, WiDi, matte Full HD IPS display, and backlit keyboard

Asus is working on a major ultrabook refresh to coincide with availability of Intel’s new Ivy Bridge CPU and we’ve managed to get our hands on the full spec sheets. The Zenbook UX31A and UX21A are direct replacements for the UX31 and UX21, respectively, though don’t be fooled by their similar product names, these are serious upgrades we’re talking about.
Matte screen options will be available on both new models, with the highest spec offering 1920 x 1080 resolution on an IPS display — that’s for both the 13.3-inch UX31A and 11.6-inch UX21A. You’ll get 350 nits of brightness if you opt for the upgraded IPS display or 300 if you go with a more conventional LCD, in which case resolutions drop to 1600 x 900 on the UX31A and 1366 x 768 on…
