Blackstone withdraws $25 billion Dell bid

Dell indicated that it would take Carl Icahn’s bid for the company seriously when it struck a deal with the billionaire investor earlier this week, and it may have more reason to do so now — multiple sources are reporting that Blackstone has now abandoned its rival offer. According to the Financial Times, Blackstone’s investors weren’t convinced of the deal’s merits, and felt that Dell’s value on the stock market is already fair. Blackstone’s deal would have included an option for shareholders to hold onto their stake. With the private-equity firm seemingly out of the picture, however, Dell’s committee may give further thought to Icahn’s bid, and founder Michael Dell’s chances of taking the company private himself have also received a…

Apple’s patent claim against Samsung’s Galaxy S III mini is no more, with Cupertino citing the phone’s lacking availability in the US for the amendment to its original November filing. In the ongoing litigation between the two electronics giants, Samsung argued that it’s Galaxy S III mini didn’t warrant inclusion in the latest volley of Samsung devices Apple wants added to its patent lawsuit; Apple apparently agreed, and is thusly withdrawing its claim against that particular device. The argument also highlights the sad news that the S III mini won’t join Samsung’s Galaxy lineup in the US.
An agreement filing spotted by Reuters from a San Jose, CA. US District Court revealed today’s news, coming just days after Judge Lucy Koh dismissed a request to permanently ban sales on several Samsung devices. It’s unclear if the other Samsung devices Apple asked to be added to the ongoing case are approved yet by the court, but we can certainly count the S III mini out for the time being.

STHoldings stormed its way out of Spotify this week, leaving only a trail of choice words in its wake. On Wednesday, the distributor boldly withdrew more than 200 of its record labels from Spotify, Rdio, Simfy and Napster, following the release of a study that cast the music subscription industry in a rather unfavorable light. According to the research, carried out by NPD Group and NARM, cloud-based services like Spotify and Rdio deter consumers from purchasing music via other channels. Amid concerns that these companies may “cannibalise the revenues of more traditional digital services,” STHoldings decided to withdraw its catalogue of more than 200 labels. In fact, of the 238 labels consulted on the decision, just four expressed a desire to remain with Spotify, et al.
