Google engineer publicizes Windows zero-day bug, claims Microsoft is ‘difficult to work with’

Windowslogostock1_640_large

A Google engineer has once again disclosed a Windows flaw. In a Full Disclosure posting to the SecLists mailing list, Tavis Ormandy — an Information Security Engineer at Google — details a vulnerability in Windows 7 and Windows 8 that can be exploited by local users to gain escalated privileges. Security firm Secunia notes that the issue is “less critical” than other flaws as it’s not a remotely exploitable one. Nevertheless, it appears that Ormandy has taken the full disclosure approach, stating he doesn’t have “time to work on silly Microsoft code,” rather than Microsoft’s preferred responsible disclosure route that calls for vulnerabilities to be reported privately.

Ormandy previously revealed a serious vulnerability in Windows…

Adobe Flash 11.3 checks in with security fixes, OS X silent updater and Firefox sandbox in tow

adobe-flash-11-3-security-fixes-os-x-firefox

While feverishly revamping Flash with the all-new Next version — to keep HTML5 from killing it — Adobe is still plugging the current incarnation with smaller updates. To that end, Flash 11.3 just popped out of beta, which sees the company add a few notable goodies for the beleaguered plugin. On top of filling seven critical security holes, Adobe added a background updating feature for Mac OS X and signed the code in preparation for compatibility with Mountain Lion. That way it’ll align it with the upcoming Gatekeeper feature in the next OS X release, though you’ll have to dial its max security down one notch to get it. Lastly, sandboxing — already in Chrome — has been tacked on to Firefox as well, slowing hackers by isolating the plugin from critical system processes. All that fresh duct tape and polyfill should keep Flash rattling along — until Adobe can pull the gleaming Next platform out of the hangar. Meanwhile, click the source for the download links.

Galaxy S III changes pin layout, incompatible with previous MHL adapters

Galaxy S III changes pin layout, incompatible with previous MHL adapters

If you’ve pre-ordered a Galaxy S III and can’t wait to see its display mirrored to the silver screen, add one more thing to that pre-launch shopping list: a new MHL dongle. According to UK retailer Clove, a change in the phone’s connector pins renders it incompatible with previous Samsung-made adapters. Sammy’s new microUSB-powered connector supports 1080p output via HDMI — though it reportedly doesn’t play nicely with 720p displays — and rings up at $ 40 on Amazon. Mosey past the break for a video unboxing of the dongle.

China-bound Sony Xperia Neo L with ICS gets handled, holds nothing back

Chinabound Sony Xperia Neo L with ICS gets handled, holds nothing back

It was only a couple of months ago that we first crossed paths with Sony’s Xperia Neo L, and now the Ice Cream Sandwich handset is back with a vengeance — at least in terms of exposure. As you may know, details were revealed in abundance (read: 1GHz Snapdragon S2 CPU, 512MB of RAM) during our first MT25i encounter, but thanks to Taiwanese site ePrice, we’re able to gander at the device posing in an array of different angles and leaving very little to the imagination. For now, pricing still remains a mystery, though we do know Sony’s 4-inch (854 x 480) Neo L is expected to hit Chinese shelves later this month. Until then, anyone intrigued can jump past the break to check out a different look, or hit the source link for the full set of snaps.

Please Stop With The Dancing, Microsoft

Look, I get it, Microsoft. You want to show people who you know how to have fun, that even Microsoft can smile once in a while. But seriously, stop with the dancing routines. Your target audience doesn’t dance. We, at best, sway with the music, but never dance.

As GeekWire points out, the latest nightmare happened earlier this week at the Norwegian Developers Conference where several dancers took the stage and performed to a song with such classy lines as “The words MICRO and SOFT don’t apply to my PENIS! (or vagina)” and “We are here to party and coding is our drug!” Laughter can be heard throughout the video as the attendees stand nearly motionless, likely in shock as if they were witnessing a train wreck in slow motion.

This comes the week after Usher took the stage during Microsoft’s E3 keynote for a nearly equally embarrassing show.

I was sitting in the audience for Usher’s 20120 E3 performance and can attest that most of the gaming industry found the show a bit misplaced; no one got out of their seat as Usher instructed several times. John Biggs said it best, though.

And of course there is this classic 2009 video of a Microsoft Store breaking out in an not-so-impromptu flash mob-ish dance. At the time I stated the store was trying too hard, but now, three years later, as Microsoft Stores have failed to be capture shoppers like the Apple Stores Redmond is clearly coping, I think they should be applauded for at least trying something.

Please, Microsoft, I beg you. A sweaty Steve Ballmer yelling and jumping around is better for your brand than employing a dance troupe to rally your remaining fans.

Swiss court eases up on Street View privacy concerns, Google says it's pleased with the ruling

It’s no secret Google’s been involved in a few privacy-related kerfuffles around the globe, but some would say those are just the burdens attached to being one of the big-guns in the industry. Still, Big G can go home to Mountain View a happy camper today, as the Swiss Federal Tribunal has decided to ease up on the company’s usage of its Street View technology in the country. Per the ruling, however, Google will have to make adjustments to its viewing methods, things like making it easier for folks to manually blur images available on Street View, and full anonymity around hospitals, schools, prisons and courts. Naturally, Google says it’s quite pleased with the outcome and that it plans to “look at the ruling closely, discuss it with the federal data protection commissioner and examine what options are available.”
