Windows Phone 7 may be the talk of the town, but good ‘ol Windows Mobile is still gettin’ ‘er done in industrial devices around the country, gadgets like the Trimble Nomad 900 series. These rugged and suitably yellow handhelds are now even better at finding their way through the wilderness with improved GPS circuitry to decrease the time it takes to pull coordinates from the heavenly bodies above. Also new is a 5 megapixel camera with flash, paired with the same 806MHz processor, and 3.5-inch VGA display, 128MB of RAM, and 6GB of flash storage. Not enough for you? CompactFlash expansion is on offer, and you know how cheap CF cards are these days.

HTC Desire HD rendered, looks pretty legit to us — oh, except for that WinMo UI
The stars are really aligning for this shindig HTC has scheduled in London for next week, aren’t they? All signs point to the launch of the Android-powered Desire Z and Desire HD — international versions of the G2 and EVO , respectively — and this render pulled off of German site BestBoyZ matches up perfectly with in-the-wild shots we’ve seen of the HD before. The only sticking point, really …

Like a bad perm in the 1980s, you just can’t be hip in the mobile world these days without an app store. We had secretly hoped that LG would take the wise route, à la Motorola with Android, of supporting a better established app platform and sticking to serving out delectable hardware, but alas it ain’t so. The Korean company is today unveiling an “all new” Application Store with over 3,000 apps in tow, about half of which are aimed at featurephones. The rest seem to be targeting Windows Mobile devices, though LG promises Android-compatible apps will also be available later in the year, all set to deliver “greater value and genuine benefits” to owners of LG handsets. Judging by the early roster of 23 countries, this effort has “emerging markets” written all over it, but there are ambitions to bring this Store to Western Europe as well. Oh goodie!

So I managed to do something we were all waiting for. Everybody at least once dreamt about zooming in browser via pinch to zoom, just as is on HTC HD2 or iPhone. YOU’RE DREAM COMES TRUE! Right now are supported Opera 9.5 and 9.7 (the ones used in HTC ROMs for TP2 and TD2 and HD2, maybe stock ones can do it too?), 10 doesn’t support it (yet), other apps are coming! Requirements: WinMo phone WM5+ (hasn’t been tested though, only on WM6.5.5 23568)

Never, ever doubt the skill and determination of the guys over at xda-developers, capable of cracking any device and bringing you fresh ROMs to brighten up your stuffy gadgets. This latest bit of wunder-code isn’t a full new image, rather a tiny WinMo app that does something magical: enables multitouch on single-touch resistive screens. How? Sadly developer OndraSter isn’t saying just yet, but it relies on leaving one finger in place and moving the other, so perhaps it detects a jump in touch position and treats it as a pinch gesture. In the videos below it’s shown working in Opera, but should work anywhere, and while the developer filmed these on an HTC Touch Pro 2 he says this will work on just about any WinMo 6 or 6.1 device. The app has sadly not been released to the wild just yet, but we hope OndraSter drops some binaries soon before he starts a riot among Windows Mobile users with more than one finger.
