Human Birdwings combines Wiimote, smartphone in DIY flying initiative (video)

Somewhere, somehow, the Wright Brothers are smiling. Jarnos Smeets, a mechanical engineer from the Netherlands, has been plugging away on his Human Birdwings project for many, many months now, and his latest breakthroughs are absolutely worthy of a peek. Put simply, the bloke has married an HTC Wildfire S, a Wii remote and bookoodles of software genius in order to create a set of wings that are controlled by a human waving his arms as if to fly. As these things tend to go, it’s all better explained in video, two of which are hosted up after the break. There’s no capture just yet of Jarnos taking off himself, but at this rate, he’ll probably be giving Santa a run for his money around this time next year.

New Zelda And Golden Wiimote To Arrive November 20th

zss

When I first saw The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword at E3 2010, I have to admit I wasn’t impressed. The demo was obviously rushed out, the Wiimote was being unresponsive, and it took him like a dozen slingshot rocks to knock down one spider. But it has definitely shaped up nicely over the last year or so, and was looking better than ever at PAX. Now that the doubters had been satisfied to some extent, it only remained to set a date for availability. And we just got that.

The new game will be hitting the US on November 20th, just in time for the holidays. I get the feeling there will be a lot of Zeldas under trees this year. And what’s more, you’ll be able to buy it bundled with that fabulous golden Wiimote we saw teased at E3 this year for a mere $ 20 extra.

The bundle will sell for $ 70 and the plain version for $ 50. Why would you not get the bundle? Both versions, however, will come with a Zelda 25th Anniversary Concert CD.

If you’re still not sure about it, we’ll have a review of the game up as soon as they start sending those little buggers out.

Augmented reality Tetris game uses Kinect hack, Wiimote, smooth jazz (video)

What does it take for a gaming classic to survive in a world ruled by titles like Portal 2 and Homefront? A Kinect hack, a Wiimote, and some electronic elbow grease, apparently. Trinity College student Keysosaurus — as he’s know to his YouTube pals — has used a bit of C#, XNA, and OpenNI coding to play 3D augmented reality Tetris using Kinect body controls and a Wiimote. The Kinect gestures do most of the work, rotating the board, zooming the camera in and out, and moving the pieces into place, while the Nintendo controller is used to rotate. Video’s after the break, but beware, the familiar strains of “Korobeiniki” have been replaced by smooth guitar jazz, so turn the volume up at your own risk.

Nao robot gets a new charging station, Kinect / Wiimote controls

Robots that are able to find a charger and plug themselves in may not be that unique anymore, but most of those chargers tend to leave the robot with little to do while it replenishes its batteries. Not so with this new charger developed by Aldebaran Robotics for its Nao robot, which basically consists of a retractable extension cord that leaves the robot free to continue interacting with its owner, or simply sit down and chill out as the case may be. What’s more, while that comes from Aldebaran itself, we’re also now starting to see some results out of the company’s new developer program, and it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that one of the first standout projects involves Wiimote and Kinect controls. Head on past the break to see both it and the new charging station on video.

Call of Duty FPS on Kinect Hack (FAAST) with Wiimote (GlovePIE)

As far as I’m aware this is the first real playable fps which uses kinect gestures. My objective with call of duty was to get a playable experience – difficult considering the precise movements needed and the fact COD was never designed to be played like this! At the moment FAAST just activates simple button presses, whilst you could use this for movement and looking about please see my other videos for why this isn’t so hot for fast, precise movement. For these reasons normal walking is done with a chuck and a Wii remote was used to get the precision aiming – though I stuggled to find an IR script that works nicely (this is using the gyro’s in the wii instead). If anyone has a good working IR FPS script for GlovePie please send me through a link! Bonuses of using kinect on an FPS is the ability to lean, duck, pick up, reload and stab realistically, cool huh? You can play this sat down as well ;) This is only a basic start to true gaming with kinect, who knows what the clever hacker community will come up with next? This Hack uses FAAST, OpenNi/Nite and GlovePIE to bring COD to Kinect, WiiMote and Windows 7! Check out the Doom www.youtube.com and Zelda snes kinect hacks if you haven’t already www.youtube.com Check out FAAST if you want to get hooked up with some gameing action. All the instructions are on their page for setting up Kinect and installing their interface. Win32 (worked under amd64 on my win 7 x64 laptop) people.ict.usc.edu If you like my wallpaper checkout

Lego Wiimote surfaces

Alas, the entire thing is not made of Legos, If it were, it wouldn’t be compatible with standard chargers and attachments. But it’s still pretty neat.

It will put you in the game more when playing those Lego Batman and Star Wars titles. These will be available on October 16th for $ 39.99.

It looks great. Just don’t lose it in your Lego bin.

Mag Gun Is Like A Game Gun Crossed With A Wiimote

I’ve tried out a few of these gun-like controllers in my time, from the silly (just a controller shaped like a gun) to the awesome (pico-projector built-in), and of course everyone loves the Redneck Techie and his Game Gun. But variety is the spice of life, and this Mag Gun has a different system than all of them that may make it worth a look.

The Mag Gun is compatible with 360 and PS3, and has buttons all over it which correspond to the face and trigger buttons on the controllers. The left analog stick is there under your left thumb, but the right analog stick (usually used for aiming) is simulated by a system that’s so simple I’m embarrassed Nintendo didn’t think of it first.

The controller has a wide-angle camera in its tip, and to calibrate it, all you have to do it point it at the center of the TV. It then (if my analysis is correct) simply tracks the luminance image of the TV (it’s a distinctive rectangular shape, obviously) and uses that to determine where the gun is pointing. That’s very smart! It has all the same drawbacks and advantages of the Wiimote, which just uses IR instead of the TV’s visible spectrum. It’s actually a very smart system, I’m impressed!

The Mag Gun just passed through the FCC, so it’s not really being marketed or branded yet, but depending on its real-life performance, you might actually see these at your local Toys R Us or GameStop.

UDraw Pen and Tablet for Wii

A Wacom-style graphics tablet for the Wii? It’s a fantastic idea, and if THQ, the maker of the uDraw, can make it work as well as a Wacom, it could have a winning peripheral.

The tablet, officially a “GameTablet”, has a slot onto which you slide the Wiimote, and this allows it to communicate with the console and also powers the tablet. The pen is tethered (a good thing, otherwise the kids would lose it in five seconds), and lets you draw on a 9 x 7-inch panel.

The uDraw will cost $70 and will ship with a game called uDraw Studio, a painting app which also uses some of the Wiimote’s buttons as controls: hit the minus-button to undo a brush-stroke, for example. It all looks worthily educational, and has the bonus that you won’t have to clutter the beautiful door of your SMEG refrigerator with the paper detritus of your kids’ scribbling sessions.

THQ has some more titles on the way already. A draw-along platformer called “Dood’s Big Adventure” (which sounds awful) and a version of Pictionary, which could be a genius move from THQ.

The uDraw will ship at the end of this year, almost certainly in time for Christmas. The games will follow, for $30 apiece, in 2011.
