White House looks to 3D printing with $200 million plan for military, energy manufacturing

The White House is looking to 3D printing as a model to revitalize the American manufacturing industry. Oh, and to help design new weapons and equipement for the military. That’s the basis of a new $ 200 million public-private initiative announced by the White House this morning, which will create three new advanced manufacturing centers around the country. The White House is opening a competitive bidding process to universities and companies to host these centers, but all three will be modeled after a 3D printing institute launched in Ohio late last year, also funded by the government.

It’s not just Bill Gates who has a benevolent eye turned towards Africa, as Microsoft has launched the second stage of its 4Afrika initiative in Tanzania. Redmond has teamed up with local provider UhuruOne to roll out white space broadband to the University of Dar es Salaam and is working with banks to help students get loans to buy Windows 8 hardware. Microsoft will also employ some students as on-campus support staff, offering training and qualifications to help them in the future. While there’s no mention of the custom Huawei W1 the company is offering in Kenya, we assume it’ll also be available as part of this project, too.

The White House is reportedly close to backing an FBI plan that would simplify online wiretapping by providing for significant fines against web services that refuse law enforcement requests. The New York Times reports that companies could face fines of up to $ 25,000 day if they fail to comply with judge-issued wiretap orders.
Citing officials familiar with the deliberations, The Times reports that while the FBI’s original idea would have mandated every internet communications service to build in a backdoor for wiretaps, the modified proposal would instead focus on companies that don’t comply with judges’ orders. Two months after appointing Todd Park as Chief Technology Officer, the White House has picked Nicole Wong for the newly created position of Chief Privacy Officer. Details about the job are still MIA, but she’ll likely be working closely with Park. One thing’s for sure, though: Wong brings some serious Silicon Valley cred to the table, having worked on product copyright and privacy issues at Google for eight years and, more recently, serving as Twitter’s legal director. If you recall, the EFF gave that social network high marks when it released its annual report last week — an auspicious sign if we’ve ever seen one.

WASHINGTON — Mark it down in the history books: April 26, 2013, was the day the White House joined Tumblr.
In keeping with the Obama administration’s use of social media to push its messaging — and, critics say, avoid the press — the White House announced via Twitter Friday that the administration has launched a Tumblr page.
President Obama used Tumblr extensively during the 2012 campaign, but that account has been converted to use by Organizing for Action, the group focused on pushing Obama's agenda. The White House announcement was the second time the president launched a new social media account in less than a week: On Monday, the White House posted its first Vines during a science fair on the White House grounds.
The White House promises to make full use of its new Tumblr page, encouraging Americans to interact with the White House through the site.
“We'll post things like the best quotes from President Obama, or video of young scientists visiting the White House for the science fair, or photos of adorable moments with Bo. We've got some wonky charts, too. Because to us, those are actually kind of exciting,” reads the first post on the Tumblr page. “And yes, of course there will be GIFs.”

UK regulator wants white space wireless service in 2014, starts trials this fall

While there have been white space test runs in the UK, these were private trials that weren’t going to get the ball rolling without government help. Thankfully, local regulator Ofcom is of a like mind. It now plans a trial for data on the in-between frequencies this fall, with full-fledged service going live as soon as 2014. The agency expects to settle on the final locations for the pilot after it chooses partners. No, Ofcom can’t guarantee that all the stars will align for rural broadband or other long-range wireless projects — but its involvement at least means those stars are within reach.
