Facebook adds voice recording to Messenger, testing VoIP service in Canada

Fast payday loans For Every One

If you’re a fan of the Facebook Messenger app keep your eye out for an interesting update coming down the pipe today for both the iOS and Android versions. The social network is adding the ability to record and send voice messages, up to one minute in length, to your friends. The goal isn’t to create a voice mail system for Facebook, but to give users another option for interacting when typing is either impossible or inconvenient. It works much like the video feature in the company’s Poke app — press and hold the red record button, speak your message and it’ll appear in-line as part of your chat, represented by a clickable sound wave icon. Even more interesting though, is the VoIP capabilities that are being flipped on for Canadian users. It’s a little buried at the moment — hidden behind the “i” icon in the chat window — but everyone’s favorite social network is now offering a way to place free voice calls to friends. Interestingly, the platform is built on open source technology and not on its Skype partnership. If things go well in the land of maple trees and Mounties we imagine it wont be too long before America gets a taste of VoIP calling Facebook style.

Orange launches Libon, offers HD VoIP calls, messages and visual voicemail (video)

Orange launches Libon, a VoIP app that wants to own your phone

Libon is a brand-new VoIP client with surprising roots– it was developed by the R&D arm of one of Europe’s biggest mobile networks, Orange. Of course, you could argue that such apps are bad for carriers, because it urges individuals to gobble up expensive data capacity– so why construct one? We talked to Valeé chief Giles Corbett and invested a couple of days testing it out ahead of its launch to discover a lot more.

Telia scraps plans to have cellphone users pay extra for VoIP in Sweden, hikes overall rates in compensation

Telia raised hackles in March when it proposed charging Swedish customers additional if they wished to make use of voice over IP. On top of the net neutrality issues, the proposed rate premium would certainly have been a slap in the face to Skype, the nation’s homegrown VoIP pioneer. While Telia’s Spanish subsidiary Yoigo has no issues with such a split, Telia itself have to have had a change of heart: as of now, all routine plans will proceed to treat net telephony as just yet another set of data packets. Just a brand-new, ultra-basic Telia Flex Bas plan excises the choice. Unfortunately, most everyone will need to pay the price for equality– brand-new registrations will certainly have their data plans “adjusted” to remunerate for raising data usage, and those paying daily will see their maximum prices leap from 9 SEK ($ 1.40) to 19 SEK ($ 2.90). As uncomfortable as the price hike may appear, nonetheless, we would certainly still sustain it to prevent carving the mobile web into pieces.

Telefonica launches Tu Me for iPhone with free VoIP calling and messaging

Tu Me iPhone app

It’s not often you see a wireless carrier launch an app that directly competes with its core services, but that seems to be just what the Madrid-based Telefónica is doing with Tu Me, a new integrated communications app for the iPhone. This jack-of-all-trades communication and social networking app works over Wi-Fi as well as your carrier’s network and offers free VoIP calling, integrated text and audio messaging, and photo and location sharing. Of course, you’ll only be able to communicate or share with other Tu Me users — the app can search your address book for other users, or you can invite friends via SMS or email.

In the few screenshots we’ve seen, this app looks better designed than we expected — there’s a definite Path vibe…

Ooma CEO Eric Stang Shows Off The New HD2 VoIP Handset

At CES 2012, there are quite a few products that would totally change the way you do things (or at least save you some money) that just don’t get enough coverage. We reported on Ooma’s new HD2 VoIP handset, but nothing beats getting the facts straight from the CEO of the company.

Luckily, Eric Stang had a chance to meet with us and chat it up. He explained that, while unnecessary, the HD2 Revel pretty much eliminates the need for a land-line. It’s basically a smartphone (or a smartphone-like handset) that pairs with the Ooma base station to offer VoIP services in your home. It also offers HD calling and caller ID with images collected from your Facebook, Google and Yahoo friends.

The handset should be available in February at select retailers and Ooma.com for $ 60.

Bobsled by T-Mobile’s free VoIP magic now available via browser, Android or iOS

Initially, T-Mobile’s Bobsled brand simply offered a way to VoIP call your Facebook friends for free but with that angle sufficiently covered, it has moved on to wider access. Starting today it supports dialing out to mobile and landline numbers in the US, Canada or Puerto Rico right from their desktop browser. Also new are free apps for Android and iOS devices, however those are still limited to calling your Facebook friends (and enemies.) Still not quite sure what all this newfangled internet telephone business is? Check out the video demo above and press release embedded after the break.
