Inhabitat’s Week In Green: cities in the sky, a cloned Chinese village and a few green DIY Father’s Day projects

As the race to develop new, more efficient modes of transportation heats up, it could soon become even easier (and greener) to jet around the globe. This week saw the Solar Impulse — that broad, funny-looking airplane — complete the world’s first solar-powered intercontinental flight. Meanwhile, Boeing’s hydrogen-powered ‘Phantom Eye’ drone aircraft successfully completed its first flight, releasing only water as a byproduct. Both developments signal growing confidence in employing new green technologies in air travel. Now that green airplanes are taking flight, what will we do with all of those old fuel-guzzling planes that are currently in use? One Oregon man may have found an answer — Bruce Campbell transformed an entire Boeing 727-200 into his home, converting one bathroom into a shower and installing a computer monitor in the middle of the control panel.

It’s No Ewok Village, But It’ll Do: Tentsile Hanging Tents

Tents: traditionally they go on the ground, usually on rocks or tree roots because you suck at picking a camping spot. But Tentsile tents, — Tentsile tents go IN THE AIR, keeping you high & dry and safely away from hungry bears/zombies. Just kidding, they will throw sticks at you until the tent rips and you fall out. They come in 2-person, 3-4 person, and 5-8 person varieties and are advertised as “the tent for any environment”. Although, if you look at the pictures, they look like “tents for places with trees.”
Hit the jump for several more shots including interior ones and yes, an actual tree-free version that may or may yes involve driving a giant pole into the ground like ten feet.

iPhone 4 KIRF reviewed, can its ‘WVGA screen village’ compare? (video)

From the outside of its white box, labeled “Phone no. 4,” it’s clear to see that the Air Phone 4 is trying awfully hard to be an iPhone 4. But then we already knew that. How does it compare to the real thing in the real world? Not well, according to intrepid reviewer Stuart Ashen. The external metal surface (which you might be familiar with) is here actually plastic, so you don’t have to worry about dropped calls if you fondle it the wrong way, but the phone is said to have awful signal regardless — despite showing full bars even when missing a SIM. Ashen concludes the thing is an “astonishing bit of copycat work” held back by “the worst touchscreen ever.” (Yeah, it’s resistive.) Oh, and that Facetime app we spotted before? It “doesn’t seem to work properly,” about the kindest thing that can be said about this junker. If you’d like to see the full (and thoroughly entertaining) review, it’s embedded for you right after the break.
