Viewsonic prepping 24-inch Android 4.1 display and 32-inch 4K monitor for later this year

Viewsonic was behind one of the stranger products we saw at Computex last June: a 22-inch display that ran a clean version of Android 4.0. The company has unveiled an updated version of the product here at CES — a 24-inch, 1080p touchscreen that runs Android 4.1 and includes USB ports for hooking up a keyboard and mouse. The internals have been upgraded to a Tegra 3 process, and it also has micro and mini HDMI ports for plugging in other machines. Viewsonic specifically noted that you could hook up a Windows 8 computer and take advantage of the operating system’s built-in touch capabilities. The company even added a blank area to the screen that lets Windows 8 users activate the edge-swiping gestures that are so integral to the OS. The…

ViewSonic VSD220 Smart Display with Android 4.0 comes to US in October, dips to $399
You might remember ViewSonic’s somewhat unusual VCD22 Smart Display from our journey to Computex. If the sight of that 22-inch, Android-based all-in-one computer set your heart aflutter, you’ll be delighted to know the completed version is pertaining to the United States as the VSD220 by mid-to-late October. It’s distinctly less mobile just what we saw in Taipei this June and strips out the battery we suspect most purchasers wouldn’t have actually made use of. For far better or worse, however, most everything else is the exact same: while we didn’t expect a modification to the TI OMAP 4 processor, the VSD220 will certainly be retaining Android 4.0 as an alternative of updating to Android 4.1 for its trip across the Pacific. The micro-HDMI video input, 1.2-megapixel front video camera, microSD slot, three USB ports and Ethernet (yes, Ethernet) do assist validate an area on the desk, particularly for those who want a secondary display for an additional mobile device or PC. The VSD220 faces a stiff fight from standard all-in-ones that don’t always cost much more– but we’ll at the very least get a cost drop to a more palatable $ 399 in return for our determination.

ViewSonic VCD22 22-inch Android Smart Display hands-on

Call it what you will: a 22-inch Android tablet or an ARM-based desktop. Whatever nomenclature you prefer, this much is true: the Viewsonic VCD22 is an odd bird. Though it looks like just another all-in-one desktop, it packs a TI OMAP processor and runs Android 4.0, making it one of the largest mother-loving slates we’ve ever seen. With a starting price of $ 479, Gigabyte is hoping budget-minded families will snap it up, or maybe schools looking for a simple system to host interactive lessons for the kiddies. Is this ultimately a better option for classrooms than that new Chromebox we reviewed this week? We’ll save that debate for another day but for now, we’ve got hands-on photos and video of this guy in action. Meet us past the break for a closer look.

Nokia’s cottoned on: launches patent lawsuits against HTC, RIM and ViewSonic
Nokia has just announced that it is commencing patent litigation against HTC, Research in Motion and ViewSonic in the US and Germany. It’s claiming that 45 of its standard-essential patents are being infringed and has registered complaints with the ITC and courts in Delaware, Dusseldorf, Munich and Mannheim. Espoo’s legal chief Louise Pentland has said that the company currently licenses its FRAND patents to “more than 40 companies,” it had no choice but to lay some courtroom smack-down on the named offenders. It appears that after losing its global market share crown and billion-dollar losses, the company is finally going on the offensive with its deep patent portfolio. You can judge that for yourself when you read the official line after the break.

ViewSonic ViewPhone 4s hands-on (video)
Viewsonic’s ViewPhone 4s was on hand at Mobile World Congress and we couldn’t help but stop and check out this surprisingly likeable handset. First off, the 326ppi 3.5-inch IPS display is beautiful, very beautiful. Other notables include dual SIM support, a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing cam and 4 gigs of storage that can be augmented via an SD card. The housing wasn’t complete in the handset being shown, though the design is pretty sharp with the inclusion of a trapdoor on the bottom which folds open to reveal a SIM tray and the spot for expansion memory. The interaction with the Android 4 OS was really fast and perfectly smooth with the standout being the ViewScene 3D launcher interface. Have a look at the video for a quick once-over and the gallery for pics from every angle and side.

ViewSonic goes dual-SIM with ViewPhone 4s, 4e and 5e, all packing Android Ice Cream Sandwich
When you’re ready, here’s yet another load of pre-MWC goodness. This year ViewSonic decided that merely slapping Ice Cream Sandwich on its new ViewPhones isn’t good enough, so instead, the company’s just-announced 4s, 4e and 5e also come with an extra SIM slot. Starting from the left we have the ViewPhone 4s featuring an impressive 3.5-inch 960 x 640 Super Clear IPS LCD (which, from the sounds of it, should be very similar to Apple’s Retina Display from LG), along with a five-megapixel camera, a VGA front-facing imager and a 1GHz chip. Pictured in the middle is a similar-looking ViewPhone 4e but packing a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 LCD, a slower processor at 650MHz only, a three-megapixel camera and one extra touch button than its sibling; all of this made with budget in mind, obviously, though somehow ViewSonic’s very proud of its 10.3mm thickness.
If 3.5-inch displays aren’t your cup of tea then you’ll have to jump straight to the 5-inch ViewPhone 5e, but so far all we’ve been told is its 800 × 480 screen resolution. Could there be more in this dual-SIM beast? Stay tuned to our MWC coverage and you’ll know as soon as we do.

Viewsonic VP Mike Holstein Demos New Android, Windows Tablets
When I think of tablets, I think of the usual suspects — Apple, Motorola, Asus, HTC, and the like. Viewsonic never really comes to mind, but that hasn’t stopped them from pushing out their own tablets and smartphones, and their VP of Business Development Mike Holstein joined us at CES to show us what the company has been up to.
First up on the agenda were two new Android tablets, the Viewpad 10e and the Viewpad e70. The bigger 10e sports a 10-inch IPS display and is surprisingly light, but it only runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Don’t expect to be blown away by its performance as it sports a single-core 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, but its $ 279 price aims to make up for it (whether or not it succeeds is up to you).
Despite being smaller, the E70 is arguably the more interesting of the two — it’s a 7-inch Ice Cream Sandwich-powered tablet that only costs $ 169. It’s no barnburner with its single-core 1GHz processor and 4GB of internal storage, but budget shoppers could do worse. That said, they could also do better for just a bit more, as the budget segment Viewsonic occupies is growing more crowded by the day.
And lest you think that Viewsonic is all about churning out low-cost tablets, Holstein also took a moment to trot out the Windows 7-powered Viewpad 10pi. It’s a far cry from their budget offerings at $ 849, but its Oak Trail processor, 64GB SSD, and its ability to boot into Android make it an intriguing (but iffy) option for companies looking to trick out their workforce.

ViewSonic ViewPad 10pi dual-boot tablet hands-on (video)
The ViewSonic ViewPad 10pi was announced here at CES, and according to the company, it’ll be in retail stores later this month. This is a scary proposition. Sadly, our time with the tablet was filled with glitches and frustration — as is, this dual-booter seems entirely unfit for the market. The Android 2.3 environment is nearly unusable and often freezes completely. While this could certainly be resolved with a software update, the hardware implementation is regrettably poor for Android use. Rather than capacitive navigation buttons, necessities such as home, menu and back are located along the edge of the tablet as small, physical buttons. Half the time, they didn’t even work. Our fleeting moments with a usable Android environment were generally pleasant, but the system generally locked up after a few minutes. As another black eye, Android Market is nowhere to be seen, which means the Amazon Appstore will have to suffice. We’re told that customers will need enable Android themselves, because out-of-the-box, the tablet will only run Windows 7. It’s painfully apparent why this decision was made.
With a 1.5GHz Intel Oak Trail Z670, we had decent expectations for performance within Windows. Unfortunately, even web browsing was generally unsatisfying. Pinch-to-zoom and scrolling were both rather choppy, and — as much as this comment pains us — we longed to return to Android. Windows has never been friendly for touch use, and while ViewSonic has included a special environment that’s designed to make applications and settings more accessible, in practice it takes a while to load and is no more useful than a set of well-appointed desktop icons. Another gripe, the included Swype keyboard would often appear at inopportune times, even when there was no option for text input. Priced at $ 849, we struggle to see much of a value proposition here. While the ViewPad 10pi attempts to be the jack of all trades, in reality it’s just one big headache.

Viewsonic launches the ViewPad 10pi and ViewPad 10e

Viewsonic has launched two new 10-inch tablets, the ViewPad 10pi and ViewPad 10e. Both run the aging Android 2.3 OS, though the 10.1pi also dual-boots Windows 7 Professional.
The 10pi is definitely the more powerful of the 2 models specs-wise, with an Intel Oak Trail z670 processor, 2GB RAM, a 64GB SSD. and a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display. It’s also got 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and an optional 3G radio for data on the move, though it’s not clear whether this is GSM or CDMA. There’s a microSD slot to bolster your storage, and a couple of USB ports for connectivity. In terms of imaging, a 3MP main camera sits on the back, with a 1.3MP webcam on the face. All of this is powered by a 3200mAh battery, in a form factor 18mm thick…
