Gran Turismo 6 coming to PS3 in time for the holidays, creator has PS4 version ‘in mind’ (video)

Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has announced that the series’ next racing title will arrive later this year, with a demo scheduled to appear this July, ahead of a holiday launch. Expect a heady 1,200 cars to make the new edition, with 33 locations (and 71 layouts) to drive them around. Polyphony Digital has developed a new game engine for Gran Turismo 6, one that “pushes the limits of the PS3,” but the incoming game might make another appearance on the incoming PlayStation 4. At a 15th anniversary event at the Silverstone racetrack in the UK, Yamauchi teased to IGN that they had a PS4 version “in mind, but for this holiday season, we thought it would be best for users to release on [the] PS3.” Gran Turismo remains Sony’s most successful franchise ever and has sold over 70 million copies to date. Sony adds that we’ll hear even more about the sequel at E3 — likely alongside a next-generation console we can see.

OLPC XO Tablet final version hands-on (video)

The XO Tablet that One Laptop Per Child was shuttling around the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center at CES back in January wasn’t quite the final version of the company’s first consumer-facing device. Now, a few weeks out from its official June 1st online availability, OLPC’s finally got its hands on the shipping product. It’s designed by Vivitar, a price-conscious manufacturer hand-picked by retail partner Walmart, marking the first time that the educational company didn’t have a direct hand in the creation of its hardware, a big change from the custom components that have traditionally gone into its XO line.
OLPC’s made some tweaks to the software, which runs atop of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, taking more advantage of the swipe functionality while navigating through its “I Want to Be An…” UI, which builds the child’s experience around dream jobs like astronaut, artist and doctor. It’s a super simplified interface built with an even younger target audience in mind than its XO laptops (ages 3 and up, according to the company). The tablet will come pre-loaded with 200 apps (100 in English and 100 in Spanish) and 200 books (also 100 English, 100 Spanish), including selections from content partners like Sesame Street and Oxford University Press. The idea is to offer up enough content so the child can be sufficiently entertained / educated even when not online.

We know Glass comes with some snap-on shades, which is no doubt great when casually vlogging in the sun. If you’re heading down a mountain, though, you’re going to need something a little more like Recon Jet. You may know Recon Instruments from its line of technolicious HUD ski goggles, but Jet sees the firm leap into more casual (yet no less useful) eyewear. Inside you’ll find a dual-core processor, WiFi, GPS, Ant+, Bluetooth and an HD camera, plus all the sensors you could want (altimeter, thermometer, accelerometer etc). Recon Jet comes with its own open platform (which typically has been based on Android), and will have some existing native apps (video streaming, Facebook integration, etc.) on display at Google I/O this week. Comparison with Mountain View’s own product will be inevitable, but we’re guessing that Recon hopes you’ll leave Glass on your desk, while popping Jet on for the weekend.

Some of us look at electric trains as efficient transportation almost by definition, but that’s not entirely true when they consume a lot of power and give little back. Amtrak is about to strike a better balance now that it’s close to receiving the first of 70 high-efficiency Siemens ACS-64 trains destined for routes across DC, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. Each engine centers on a regenerative braking system that can recover up to 5MW of energy, much of which goes back to the power grid. The machinery is smarter, too: it can self-diagnose problems and mitigate the impact until repairs are possible. Commuters won’t immediately notice the difference when ACS-64 trains reach the rails between this fall and 2016, but there should be important behind-the-scenes savings. Amtrak reckons that the new vehicles could lower energy consumption by 3 billion kilowatts in the long run, which might help both the company’s bottom line and local utilities.

Is America ready for Metro: Last Light ? Maybe! after a few tweaks.
Last December, the game publishing giant THQ went bankrupt. The handful of THQ games that were still in development went up for auction, including the nearly complete Metro: Last Light, the anticipated sequel to 2010s Metro: 2033, by the Ukrainian development studio 4A Games. Last Light, a first person shooter that tells the story of the various factions fighting for control of the Moscow Metro system, now home to the survivors of a nuclear apocalypse, was purchased at auction by Koch Media in January and released this week to outstanding reviews.
BuzzFeed has obtained the notes of an anonymous “game doctor” from an unnamed American publisher that bid unsuccessfully on the rights to Last Light. The notes, republished below, detail the publisher’s plans to help 4A polish the game for an American audience.
What you got right.
Hello, friends,
First: congratulations on making Metro: Last Light. You’ve successfully identified the first and most important factor in breaking through here in the American game market: You made a first person shooter. Look: that's no small thing. Believe it or not, in this market for games, there are still people making role-playing games and adventure games and all manner of dollar-store crap. So take a moment to pat yourselves on the back.
Ok, moment over, and that's the last nice thing I'm going to say. Listen up. If you want this thing to sell at all in America, you will follow the advice I'm about to give you. It takes brass balls to succeed in this first person shooter market, and I've got them. This game is weird, and not in a good way like Bulletstorm, in a European way like BioShock, the success of which still boggles my mind. You need to make some changes for this thing to succeed.
My first note: that title! Fellas, listen: the only thing I would keep about that title is the colon. Pro tip: the colon is like the handgun of English. If you pull it out and point it at something, people have to pay attention. I'm working with the people at Activision to make it Call of Duty → Ghosts, but I'm not sure we're there yet, as a country. Give it time. Anyways! Metro: Last Light. It sounds like a worker bee going home at the end of a twelve-hour shift. I need a nap just saying it out loud. All the great first person shooters have names that really slap you around and won't leave you alone. Even in “Crysis”, which lacks a colon, that “y” tells me there's something just a little different about this crisis, something awesome. Suggestions, feel free to ignore: Nuke City: Russia. Blast Radius: Critical Distance. Ranger Force: God and Country. Warpocalypse. If none of these appeal, try mixing and matching.

This is the birthday cake made by Wedding Cakes By Nicole featuring Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Tetris and Frogger scenes on each side, and Pong on the top. And if you think I wouldn’t peel all those characters off and eat them you are incorrect. Dead incorrect. If you were a computer game you ‘d be blinking GAME OVER right now.
Dimity asked me to create a cake for her Fiance, Stephen, who adores “old-fashioned” video game.
I created a 3 tier square cake, with each of the sides representing a preferred retro platform game. Topped off with a game off Pong, with the score showing Stephen’s “30″ years. The board had a joystick, buttons and coin slot.
Man, I would have gotten rid of to have that birthday cake. Hell, I would have pushed someone down the stairs to have ANY cake. And choked somebody for a single pal to even keep in mind my birthday. Do you even understand which month it is? \* waving knife \* TELL ME WHICH MONTH IT IS. \* journeys and falls on knife \* I simply … desired … a shock celebration.
