This morning, iOS jailbreak tool Absinthe 2.0 was released, bringing support for the new iPad — now, just a few hours later, FireCore has released a new version of the Seas0nPass jailbreak tool for the second-generation Apple TV. The big news here is that it finally supports untethered jailbreaking for Apple TV software version 5.0.1 — for those less familiar with jailbreaking, this means that you don’t need to plug the Apple TV into your computer during startup. Out of the 12 plugins FireCore highlights, ten of them are currently working — only the Overflow and Remote HD plugins aren’t working yet. Apple’s not gonna like this one, but news of the perpetual cat-and-mouse game between it and the hacking community continues with the announcement of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1, which is now alive and kicking on the iPhone 4. The good news went out in the form of a tweet from pod2g, and while the naughty bit of software isn’t yet available for public download, we can only hope that it’ll soon be ready for mass consumption. As you’ll recall, we last saw hints of an untethered jailbreak for the latest iPad (also iOS 5.1), which similarly remains elusive to the public. At any rate, we welcome the progress — now bring on the exploits.

Are we shocked to see an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak for the new iPad? Not so much. Are we surprised to see it arrive so quick? Hell, yes. The iPad 2′s untethered jailbreak took an eternity, whereas this new tunnel seems to have been dug during one fleeting Friday night. The hacker to thank is i0n1c, aka Stefan Esser — a man who moves so fast his YouTube clip reportedly had 28 likes before it had even finished uploading. Just leap that final fence, Stefan, by releasing your jailbreak to the public, and we shall re-christen you bi0n1c. (Unless you want to keep your current handle, which would also be fine.)
