OpenMobile ACL for webOS resurrected on Kickstarter, hopes to bring Android apps to HP Touchpad

The promise of OpenMobile’s Application Compatibility Layer is inciting: seamlessly run Android apps on another operating system as if it was meant to be there. Unfortunately for fans of Palm’s last hurrah, the project’s webOS port died with the HP Touchpad. That won’t stop dedicated fans, however — Phoenix International Communications plans to resurrect webOS ACL. Taking the project to Kickstarter, the team has showed an early build of the project on an HP Touchpad, seamlessly running Android apps in cards alongside native webOS applications. Phoenix hopes that a functional ACL will reduce Touchpad owner’s reliance on dual-booting Android, giving them the freedom to enjoy webOS without sacrificing functionality. The team is promising a relatively short development time, thanks to OpenMobile’s early work, and hopes to deliver a consumer ready build in July. At least a few enthusiasts were gutted when HP exited webOS hardware prior to the Touchpad Go can even have the distinction of a news release. WebOS Harbors’ Simon Busch can’t resurrect HP’s miniature tablet strategies, but he can give us an inkling of what we missed with his brand-new alpha port of Open webOS for the Nexus 7. The conversion is surprisingly complete given its basis on a related Galaxy Nexus edition: along with supporting core functionality like the accelerometer and WiFi, it at last cuts the cord and works separately of a COMPUTER connection. The only clear defect is periodic lag. We ‘d still be careful with a rough construct of an OS that wasn’t ever meant for Google’s tablet; if that’s no barrier, however, the Nexus 7 port is the next-best method to relive HP’s initial vision for 2011.

Woot! A $200 32GB HP TouchPad

Yeah, it’s not $ 99 and it’s refurbished but it’s still a TouchPad. The tablet was once heralded as an iPad killer. Now, I’m not sure if it could even kill a Notion Ink Adam in a head-to-head sales battle. But still, thanks to an honestly smart move from HP, the TouchPad and webOS is valuable to some in the development community.
But you better act fast like previous TouchPad offers. This deal is up on Woot, where the Amazon subsidiary only has a limited number of items. The price is $ 195 for a 32GB WiFi TouchPad — not a bad deal for a slightly bulky tab capable of running Android.
HP debuted the TouchPad as a true iPad competitor when it hit stores last summer. But for $ 500 it was a tough sale even though it was a capable device. Consumers apparently agreed as HP killed the product after just 49 days and eventually cleared out the remaining stock with a $ 99 firesale. Since then, HP released webOS to the open source community and essentially gutted the departments. This Woot sale might be the last time you can grab an HP TouchPad.

Touchpad Free adds Windows 8 gestures to its WP7 app

There’s no shortage of apps that let you use your mobile phone as a touchpad for your computer, but Touchpad Free is the first we’ve heard of that adds explicit support for Windows 8 gestures. The remote pointer app should allow your Mango-powered device to play nice with that preview copy of Win 8 you’ve been running since it hit the web, complete with the multitouch gestures that are key to navigating the metro interface. To get it up and running you’ll have to install a small server app on your PC which you can find at the source. Follow the second source link and you’ll come upon Touchpad Free itself. Neat huh? When we reviewed Dell’s XPS 13 ultrabook last week, only three things held it back: an iffy display, a lightweight battery and a sluggish, buggy trackpad. Well, the last of those problems may soon be no more, as Dell’s got a fix on the way, and we can personally vouch that the new drivers are far more satisfactory. Presently, the XPS 13′s Cypress touchpad drivers are at v2.3.6.25, and that’s what you’ll find on Dell’s site, but we found v2.3.6.33 far faster to respond to user input and (after a quick run of a Dell-provided calibration tool) also a bit more precise. Perhaps most importantly, though, v2.3.6.33 automatically disables the trackpad after you begin typing, which keeps your palms from making the cursor jump when they brush the…
