Oh Shi-Shi, They Got Drive-Thru Apple Stores Now?: Thieves Crash BMW Through Apple Store In Robbery

drive-thru-apple-store.jpg

This is the security camera footage from an Apple store in Temecula, California where last week a group of dumbasses drove their BMW SUV through the window and security gate and stole a bunch of iPads and computers. Unfortunately for the idiots involved, their license plate got stuck in the security gate on the way out and they were easily located and arrested. A couple things, 1. were you not worried about security cameras catching your license plate either? 2. WHY DID YOU USE YOUR OWN CAR? Based on the video it looks like it probably took a decent amount of cosmetic damage. Were you stealing iPads to pay for the damage you did to your car during the robbery? Regardless, enjoy the crappy ham and cheese sandwiches and cranberry juice boxes, @$ $ holes (I’ve been to jail in Temecula before).

Hit the jump for the video which may or may yes look like they’re actually trying to destroy as many products as possible by breaking all the tables.

Taiwan’s revised LUXGEN7 SUV offers THINK+ computer, defends itself from thieves

Tired of the ho hum amenities within your luxury SUV? Us too. Luckily for affluent drivers in Taiwan, the THINK+ in-car computer situated within the comfy confines of the LUXGEN7 MPV offers plenty of innovation. First, the vehicle boasts an anti-theft seat feature that pinches the driver’s seat up against the steering wheel — some would call it old-fashioned frustration, but we’ll just stick with “brilliant.” Moving right along, an intelligent powered tailgate can be configured as a means to prevent collisions in tight spaces. The whip also has four visual assistance systems that include 360 degree surveillance, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and a night vision enhancement system. At a price comparable to other luxury SUVs on the US market (around $ 25,800 to $ 35,400), there’s just one convenience missing that Taipei’s taxis seem to already have: unchecked television access.

Thieves damage South African traffic lights, reach for the juicy SIM card innards

Johannesburg, South Africa had six hundred high-tech traffic signals, each with a cellular modem and GPS chip. The idea was, if one malfunctioned, they’d call home immediately. Well, that plan isn’t working out so well, because only two hundred are still in working order — vandals ripped apart the rest to get at their SIM cards, causing traffic jams and accidents. Apparently, the government-provided cards are a ticket to unlimited free phone calls for the thieves — at least until the individual devices are identified and their permissions revoked. The Johannesburg Roads Agency told the Mail & Guardian that the crime looks like an inside job, because only the new, SIM-equipped signals seem to have been targeted so far. The damages are piling up, with the agency figuring it will require ZAR 8.8 million (roughly $ 1.26 million) to repair the four hundred signals currently out of order. Needless to say, the agency is looking at ways to better secure the traffic lights. We’re guessing that switching to CDMA is probably off the table. Embedded SIMs, perhaps?

Bicycle lock climbs poles, encourages would-be thieves to look elsewhere (video)

Had your morning cup of Haterade? Get ready to have it flushed out. A team of bicyclists / engineers have assembled what might be the best thing to happen to the bicycle since Lance Armstrong, with the (currently unnamed) pole-climbing bike lock created for Germany’s own Conrad. There’s no word on if (or when) this fancy contraption will go on sale, but we know at least one Dutch inhabitant that’ll be parting ways with as many Euros as necessary in order to take one home. In short, this device straps around a nearby light pole and then carries your bike high into the air (and thus, faraway from the hands of thieves) via a remote control. The only problems? For one, it’s huge, and should prove worrisome to carry around. Secondly, you’ll be in a whole heap of trouble should some other prankster decide to hike his / her bike up the same pole beneath yours. Anywho, the video after the break is definitely worth a watch.

Canadian thieves steal $1 million in Sony PlayStation goods, couldn’t wait any longer for GT5

Canadian theives steal $ 1 million in Sony PlayStation goods, couldn't wait any longer for GT5

Crime doesn’t pay, folks, but sometimes you have to be at least somewhat amused by the shenanigans of those who operate beneath the law. Workers at a shipping facility in Brampton, Ontario discovered on Monday that a trailer containing $ 500,000 worth of Sony goods was stolen. Apparently whatever measures they took to prevent a recurrence were insufficient, because the very next day a second trailer went missing containing even more PS3 and PSP games and hardware. The first truck looks something like the above, with Nebraska plates, while the second is an XTRA Lease model with Ontario tags. If you see either don’t tarry — call Kevin Butler immediately.

Thwart laptop thieves by shutting off your wi-fi

Most of us don’t think twice about lugging a $2000 object to a public place and then leaving it for five minutes to grab a coffee refill — with no other assurance that it won’t be stolen than that there are other people around. I’ve started being a bit more careful since laptop theft has gone up around here, but it’s just as easy to forget that laptop rustlers don’t just hang out in cafes. And if they’re savvy, they may even employ wireless signal trackers to pinpoint the location of laptops hidden under car seats, in trunks, or in garages.

It seems (although I’m not sure how true this is for different types and makes) that some laptops keep their wireless on for a set time after being shut or told to sleep — probably because people often remember something they needed to look up, and pop the laptop back open. Laptop thieves make use of cheap wi-fi strength indicators available at any Fry’s to find a likely car and then, I suppose, bust it open the usual way.

People are advised to shut down their wi-fi before putting their computers to sleep, or else fully shut down the machine. Seems reasonable enough, but why do I suspect most people won’t take this advice?
