Xbox Live interruption temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users
Microsoft added a cloud storage feature to the Xbox 360 in its fall 2011 dash panel update, however today a failure has taken it offline for the last several hours and counting. As kept in mind by Joystiq, attempting to access your cloud saves is leading to a 0x807b0198 mistake for lots of, although other parts of XBL like streaming video services and multiplayer games profiles are unaffected. For the moment, we had the ability to copy/move a few of our saves from the cloud cache on our hard disk (Settings–) storage space–) cloud storage space) to the regular tough drive section, and access them from there. Your mileage may differ, but otherwise you’ll simply require to watch out the XBL dash panel status web page to see when things are back to typical. There’s no word yet on when it will be completely restored, but a message there states engineers are working on a fix. We’re not missing out on the old “gamertag recovery” attribute the cloud system changed and upgraded, however any type of considerable failure is definitely enough to make us think about keeping our saves backed up on a memory card in a safe spot– just in case.

AT&T and T-Mobile temporarily share networks in New York City and New Jersey, shoulder the post-hurricane load
Communication has been all too spotty across much of New York City and New Jersey given that Typhoon Sandy struck the area, and those who can get with on their cellphones have actually found themselves on specifically crowded networks. AT&T and T-Mobile are offering some much-needed, if temporary, relief: the two have actually struck a deal to share their GSM and 3G networks in the area with no roaming fees or plan modifications while the networks return, with the best-functioning network taking precedence in any type of given connection. A return to the normal state of affairs hasn’t been dealt with in stone and will likely rely on numerous, numerous aspects, but it’s a much valued gesture for locals who may not have a choice to move for a crucial telephone call.

Microsoft temporarily suspends new Windows Phone apps amidst download bugs

Microsoft is in the midst of what it says is a major backend overhaul to the infrastructure for the Windows Phone Store (neé Windows Phone Marketplace). Apparently there have been some bumps in the road — specifically many users have been unable to download or update apps. The error, according to a blog post at Microsoft’s Windows Phone Blog, is related to digital certificates and should only affect users who have upgraded their phones to version 7.5, while those who had that version of the OS preinstalled should be ok. Microsoft says it’s working on a fix now, but in the meantime the company is not going to publish new Windows Phone apps to the store.
“Please ignore this message. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as we…

US judge temporarily stops Motorola from blocking Microsoft products — in Germany

A federal judge in Seattle issued a ruling today preventing Motorola, at least for now, from enforcing a ban in Germany on the sales of Windows, Internet Explorer, the Xbox and other Microsoft products implementing the H.264 codec standard. The judge’s decision is in response to a motion Microsoft filed at the end of March asking the US court to issue a a temporary restraining order to prevent Motorola from enforcing a potential, future German injunction. If you think that’s confusing, don’t feel bad — it is.
There are a couple of unusual things going on here: a US court is attempting to control Motorola’s actions outside of the US, relating to the enforcement of a German sales ban that hasn’t yet been issued by a German court….

Weibo services ‘punished’ for Beijing coup rumors, comments temporarily disabled
For a country who doesn’t really do April Fools’ Day, you know China means business when it lays the smackdown on its weibo services. Here’s the background story: about a week ago there was a rumor on the Chinese web about a military coup on one of the main streets in Beijing, and coincidentally I was in town around the time (for the Windows Phone launch). Funnily enough, I wasn’t aware of this at all until my taxi driver in Hong Kong asked me about my visit, as he claimed that the passenger he picked up beforehand was actually a Chinese military officer who had several intense phone calls about said coup.
But of course, nothing actually happened. In fact, the guards at Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City were pretty relaxed when I visited on that very day. As for the rumormongers, the Chinese government announced through Xinhua that 16 websites have been shut down and six people have been detained, while local microblogging platforms Sina Weibo and Tencent Weibo have been “criticized and punished accordingly,” though it didn’t elaborate on the details. All we know is that comments under each weibo post are now disabled until local time 8pm on April 3rd, during which these two companies can, in their own words, clean up the mess. Well, at least we now know where to draw the line for China’s April Fools’.

With Injunction, LG Temporarily Stops European PS3 Imports

The feud between Korea’s LG and Japan’s Sony has just hotted up. LG has won a preliminary injunction against Sony in Europe, the result of which is the temporary banning of the importation of PS3s into the continent. LG says Sony infringed on a number of its patents, specifically with regard to Blu-ray playback. Hence, the preliminary injunction.
As it stands, the ban will be in effect for 10 days, as European customs officials are ordered to confiscate any and all PS3s as they arrive.
About 100,000 PS3s per week are typically imported into Europe. Retailers are estimated to have about two to three weeks’ of PS3s in stock, meaning the ban won’t really hurt plain ol’ folks unless it’s extended beyond the initial 10-day period.
Sony says it’s “looking into [the] matter.†The matter? LG’s claims that Sony trampled all over its Blu-ray playback patents.
What’s the worst case scenario here? Probably that Sony would have to write LG a giant cheque alongside the sale of each PS3.

Walkman temporarily outsells iPod in Japan

So much so that Sony’s Walkman line has temporarily passed the iPod for sales in Japan again, according to researchers at BCN. Players like the S640 helped Sony slide past in August with 47.8 percent of sales where Apple dropped to 44 percent. The Walkman overtook the iPod briefly a year ago, but these new figures mark the first time that Sony managed to hold an overall lead for the month.
The iPod nano 8GB and 16GB were still the top sellers, but it was the variety of Sony players that ultimately overwhelmed their numbers.
Part of this switch is due to Apples update schedule. It regularly updates iPods in September, so many were likely holding off for the new iPod lineup while Sony was still in mid-cycle.

Fring bends under the pressure of iPhone video calling, Skype temporarily locked down
We guess this is a “good” thing in a roundabout way, but Fring has just dropped the knowledge that its video calling update for the iPhone 4 has been so wildly successful that they’ve been forced to temporarily restrict Skype access to “free up capacity” for direct Fring-to-Fring calls. Hopefully the company is hard at work beefing up its infrastructure to bring everything back to normal — but in the meantime, at least you’ve got an easy way to look your EVO-toting friends square in the face without having to actually see them in the flesh. Perish the thought!
[Thanks, Roy]
