TechCrunch Makers: An Evening At The Van Brunt Stillhouse

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 9.17.25 AM

What do you do when you currently have the coolest job in the globe? You start a company where you could have another incredible task on nights and weekends.

Daric Schlesselman is an editor for the Daily Program in Manhattan who resides in deepest Red Hook, a little, cool neighborhood on the edge of Brooklyn. There he leases a former paint manufacturing facility where he ’ s established the Van Impact Stillhouse and storage space center where he makes some of the nicest grappa, whiskey, and rum this side of the Gowanus.

Schlesselman began out as a homebrewer but has taken financial investment to develop a little, artisinal distillery in Red Hook. He makes booze to match the period – rum in the summertime, whiskey in the fall, and grappa anytime – and he ’ s the perfect example of somebody who followed his dream to sweet accomplishment.

The stillhouse is compact and well-appointed with lots of barrels of tasty whiskey aging in white oak. He might not be making 3D printers or digital eyes, but the Van Force Stillhouse shows us that even a mild-mannered TELEVISION editor can, with a little time, energy, and willpower, construct a real business making some impressive stuff.

TechCrunch Makers is a video series including individuals who make cool stuff. If you ’ d like to be included, email us!.
