Nine Months After Talking Up The Carrier Deal, FreedomPop Shows Off Its First Sprint-Friendly Hotspot
FreedomPop has been promising to bring mostly free 4G internet access to the masses for over a year now, but those ambitions have been hampered by partner Clearwire’s spotty WiMax coverage — there are sizable swaths of the country where you just can’t get service. That won’t be the case for much longer though, as FreedomPop has just started taking orders its first Sprint-friendly wireless hotspot.
Granted, it’s not exactly a new one. The $ 40 Overdrive Pro first hit Sprint shelves back in early 2011, but at least the dual-mode device allows FreedomPop users to tap into Sprint’s sizable nationwide 3G network when WiMAX isn’t available. As always, FreedomPop users are given 500MB of free wireless network access per month, but the company offers a slew of monthly rate plans and features in hopes of generating some additional revenue. It seems to be working well enough so far — FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols told FierceWireless that nearly half of the service’s existing users have made some sort of additional purchase.
Frankly, it’s about time. FreedomPop first announced that it would migrate to Sprint’s CDMA/LTE service last July, and since then the Niklas Zennstrom-backed company has dutifully pushed out WiMAX devices while talking up the eventual switch.
In the event that you’ve already thrown down some cash on one of FreedomPop’s earlier doodads, you can contact customer service to coordinate a swap, though you should know that the company is also hoping to roll out some devices capable of running on Sprint’s growing LTE network in the months to come. Among those forthcoming LTE devices is a nifty clip that physically attaches to tablets, and FreedomPop previously confirmed that it plans to flesh out its existing hardware lineup with a slew of wireless data cases for Android devices like Samsung’s Galaxy S III. It’s worth noting though that the iPhone sleeve that garnered plenty of early attention in the company still hasn’t seen the light of day because the FCC has qualms about its design, so these sorts of device-specific hotspots may need some more fine-tuning before FreedomPop pushes them out the door.

Forget Google Glass, Google Debuts ‘Talking Shoe’ Concept At SXSWi, Wants More Social, Motivational Everyday Objects
Meet Google’s “talking shoe,” which aims to translate movement data in witty messages to users and their friends. The concept apparel, showcased at the search giant’s swanky SXSW Interactive headquarters, is part of a new arts project - ”Art, Copy, Code” – which aims to breathe a social, life-like experience into everyday objects. “If standing still was a sport, you’d be world champion,” the trash-talking shoe projects on a monitor hanging over a rainbow-colored obstacle course after it senses I’ve been standing still.
At a distance, users seem a tad pathetic trying to trigger positive feedback from the shoe. But when I strapped it on, I felt oddly compelled to impress my new automated coach. Combining coaching (even robotic coaching) made lifeless data unexpectedly motivational. Essentially, it’s Richards Simmons in a shoe.
In case critics think this is another one of Google’s flights of profitless creative fancy, Arts Copy Code is deliberately about improving advertising. “It’s explicitly aimed at how translating how Silicon Valley thinks about technology into how creative agencies think about advertising,” says project lead Aman Govil.
Brands such as Nike, who outfit professional athletes with health-tracking shoes and bracelets, could broadcast an athlete’s spring-training performance in realtime. Rival athletes’ apparel could trash talk one another automatically.
It’s still (very) early days for the arts project. The talking shoe (and shoe strap) concept was developed through a grant to electronics agency Yes Yes No. Google plans to open up the project to more everyday objects in the near future. One hypothetical use-case, imagines Govil, is an alarm block that sends snarky messages to co-workers if users have to hit the snooze on their alarm clock more than three times.
There’s been heightened attention to research that quantifies how much our friends affect our weight, success, and personal lives. University of San Diego political scientist and Connected author James Fowler found that having an obese friend can significantly increase people’s chances of also having their own set of marshmallowy love handles. And it’s no secret that a spirited friend can get us up at 5 a.m. for a morning run as much as they can tempt us into finishing their plate of fries.
Health startups have attempted to “gamify” good behavior by encouraging users to share personal goals with friends. Nike+ FuelBand, for instance, shares users’ exercise habits with their friends on the personal social network, Path.
This project attempts to remove the barrier presented by current products. The social aspect has always required one extra step of human effort. However fast a one-word message of encouragement could take to type about a friend’s morning run, the minor inconvenience is enough to seriously limit engagement. This new automated personality seems to have a place, especially when we’re all too busy to be personal.
Currently the project is just a concept. There’s no need to jump over to the Google Play store and find the buy link. But Google Glass was just a concept at one point, too.

Yes, Facebook Is For Talking To Your High School Friends
Science proves it.

Source: Paul Matthew Photography / via: shutterstock.com
Most research about Facebook these days paints a picture of a depressing place where people who don’t really know you make you feel bad about yourself. But a new study confirms that it's actually very useful for its most basic, homespun purpose: helping young people keep in touch with their high school friends.
Researcher Kevin Johnston and his coauthors surveyed 572 college students in South Africa about their Facebook use and their “social capital,” which is defined basically as the benefits they get from relationships with people. The researchers measured the students' social capital by asking questions like how much they felt a part of their college's community and how comfortable they'd be asking a high school acquaintance for a favor.
Heavy Facebook use, they found, was associated with several kinds of social capital, but the most significant correlation was with “maintained” social capital — essentially, the benefits of staying close with your existing friends from home. In addition to being able to ask for favors, students who used Facebook a lot were more likely to say they could find out about job opportunities or events in another town from high school friends or acquaintances.
Thinking of old friends in terms of “capital” may seem a bit cold, but of course these friendships have intrinsic value too. Johnston and his coauthors mention research on “friendsickness,” or “the anguish caused by loss of contact with friends.” Facebook may be able to mitigate this feeling, even when friends are far apart physically.
Previous research has backed up the importance of high school friends on Facebook. Researchers at Michigan State University, for example, found that undergrads thought high school friends made up the main “audience” of their Facebook profiles — 97% said these friends would see their profiles, while only about 15% said strangers would see them.
Of course, the idea that Facebook is useful for keeping up with childhood friends isn't news to anyone who's used to getting status updates from their former lab partner ten times a day. Still, its worthwhile to remember that the network isn't just a place where people make new, “virtual” (often understood as “fake”) friends, but also a place where they keep up with their oldest real-life friends. And that act of keeping up can have both emotional and practical benefits.
Who do you think looks at your Facebook profile?

Above are college students' responses to this question. Close to 100% of students said their high school friends saw their profiles, while a much smaller percentage thought strangers would look at it.

Google focuses on fashion with Glass, reportedly talking with eyewear startup Warby Parker

Google is working out with stylish eyeglass start-up Warby Parker to make its Google Glass frames more stylish, reports The New York Times. Neither company has commented openly on the talks, but it & rsquo; s understood that Google is trying hard to push Glass into the fashion globe, with a considerable presence at New york city Fashion Week in September. Warby Parker arised in 2010 as an online-only, lower-priced alternative to costly eyewear boutiques.
During the Glass & rsquo; s advancement, Google has actually regularly concentrated on changing the image of the product from a large, head-mounted computer system into a streamlined, linked accessory. The Times mentions that 18 months back, the prototype product weighed more than 8 pounds, while today, it weighs …

Chrome and Firefox now talking to each other through WebRTC chats (video)
The dream for WebRTC is to offer truly software-independent video and voice chat, but it hasn’t worked out that way given limited support. Google and Mozilla have just showed us that it’s at last possible to reach across the aisle, provided both sides are running the newest browsers. Should one user run Chrome 25 beta and the other run a nightly build of Firefox, a flag switch will let the two sides hold a video conversation solely through a web app. This doesn’t mean we’re about to toss out Google Talk or Skype, mind you: even when finished versions of the browsers appear, we’ll need both a completed WebRTC standard and the web developer support to see broader usage. Nonetheless, it’s clear that cross-browser chat is at least on the horizon.
