N900 takes a bite out of Ice Cream Sandwich, suffers Android brain freeze (video)

Espoo’s freshly dug some graves for its operating systems past, but that doesn’t mean the mobile underground’s leaving its antiquated wares behind. A hacker going by the winsome moniker of Drunkdebugger has kept the NITDroid project chugging along on the N900 with a port of Android’s latest 4.0 frosty delight. Fair warning — this is an extremely early build and is even referenced as being “pre-pre-alpha,” so don’t expect the overhauled, pure Google experience to be running seamlessly. Still, it’s a bright spot for Nokia fanboys and girls that simply refuse to make peace with the wireless days of old. Jump past the break to take a brief look at this buggy ROM force closing.

Microsoft looking to secure Windows Phone as Apple suffers iOS 5 flaws

Microsoft is looking to hire a software design engineer to help the company secure its Windows Phone devices.

The software giant posted an advert inviting engineers to “help make Windows Phones the most secure phones on the market,” on Thursday. The job listing comes in the same week that iOS 5 struggles with two serious flaws that allow users to bypass the lock screen. CNET reported on Wednesday that the iPhone 4S Siri feature allows anyone to use a device to send emails, SMS and make calls even if a passcode is set on the device. Some iPhone 4S users have also reported that they can access the address book, photos and calendar on the device using Siri. Another serious flaw hit Apple’s iPad 2 device running iOS 5 this week. 9to5mac report that anyone with a Smart Cover accessory can break into an iPad 2. 9to5mac confirm that the issue is present in iOS 5 and could also working on earlier versions of iOS 4.3 (see video below for a demo). A similar flaw affected Apple’s iPhone 4 device around a year ago, allowing users to access devices after bypassing the lockscreen.

Microsoft is aiming to create the next generation of security software for Windows Phones. The software maker wants to ship the most secure phone the market has ever seen. Microsoft is currently fighting off enterprise adoption of iPhone, iPad and Android devices thanks to the secure and business oriented nature of Microsoft’s products. Security flaws are a major factor for enterprise and business adoption and a big reason why some businesses opt for third party products like GOOD to provide email, calendar and contacts to “consumer” devices. A large majority of enterprise customers choose RIM’s BlackBerry infrastructure and devices for their employees but Microsoft is clearly attempting to ship a more secure ecosystem with Windows Phone:

“We want your passion for shipping secure devices, technical depth, drive for breaking code and finding security holes. If you’re looking for your next move, or just looking to be involved in the ‘next big thing’ you should be talking to us. We can help bring out the best in you and you help bring out the best in our products.

The Mobile OS Platform group is looking for talented SDETs with a passion for shipping next generation of secure software for mobile phones. As a member of the security team, you will find yourself working on cutting edge fuzzing technology, pentesting, and other security tools to help us ship the most secure phone the market has ever seen. You’re expected to stay at the top of all current exploits and work closely with MSEC to react to all new found exploits. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend known security conferences.”

A Disaster In The Making? Sony’s PlayStation Network Suffers Prolonged Global Outage

Sony’s PlayStation Network, its online service for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable consoles, suffered from a major outage today, which remains ongoing. According to Sony’s blog, the interruption in service may last into the long weekend — for at least another “full day or two”. The Sony Network currently has more than 70 million registered users, many of whom have taken to Twitter and other social networks to express their frustration over the prolonged downtime. Millions of unhappy gamers (and Netflix customers) a PlayStation outage makes.

Not to mention, the outage comes on the same day that Amazon’s cloud-based web services crashed, taking Reddit, Foursquare, and Quora (among others) with them. Unfortunately, it seems that today has become a fairly drastic example of the vulnerability of the cloud and the extent to which these outages can effect business-as-usual on the Web.

Netflix suffers temporary website outage today, permanent Dexter outage this summer

The bad news is that our bulging tips box reports Netflix’s website and Watch Instantly streaming service have been mostly inaccessible for the last couple of hours. Those lucky enough to have the page open from earlier may still have access, and devices based on older UIs are up and running while the newer HTML5 based frontends seem to be down for the count. The worse news is Crain’s New York Business reported today that a new licensing deal with Showtime will not renew streaming access to older seasons of currently airing shows like Dexter and Californication when they expire this summer. Instead, their arrangement will cover shows that are off the air like The Tudors and Sleeper Cell.

Showtime has decided to hold the fresher stuff back for its TV Everywhere portals accessible by pay-TV subscribers despite Netflix’s best efforts to pitch itself as a friend to the premium networks, which could also explain its plan to start offering original content of its own next year. Wide outages like this have been relatively rare and while we’ll just keep an eye on @NetflixHelps until it’s back up, there’s no telling what other blank spaces we might find in our instant streaming queues in the future.

Lenovo’s Chinese eBox console suffers delay, here’s how its camera-based games might play (video)

We had nearly forgotten Lenovo’s Eedoo spinoff and its China-bound video game console, seeing as how it failed to meet a planned November 2010 unveiling, but IDG News reports that the motion-sensing eBox hasn’t slipped Lenovo’s mind — it’s just been pushed further into 2011. How far? If we were to guess, we’d say Q2 2011, and the video above spells out why. Seemingly by coincidence, we were just sent this footage of a game called Flyimal, built on the Unity Engine as a collaboration between 3D asset company Mixamo and 3D gesture recognition company Omek Interactive, and — get this — running on “the first [console] to be made by the Chinese for the Chinese market and due for launch by Q2 of this year.” We can’t think of many game systems that fit that description, to be honest. There’s not a lot to look at here, but we imagine PrimeSense and competitors will be perusing the video soon, noting that the machine captures precisely 15 points on a user’s body for its gesture recognition algorithms… and wondering if there’s a third dimension to any of that movement. Read Unity, Mixamo and Omek’s statement after the break.

Korea Telecoms suffers an Identity Tab crisis

What’s this? A 7-inch, aluminum-trimmed, multitouch tablet from Korea running Android? Why it could be none other than the Samsung Galaxy, er, KT Identity Tab. Think of this 1GHz tablet with TFT-LCD, 8GB of internal memory (and SD expansion), DMB TV tuner, light and gravity sensors, built-in ebook reader, and 3 megapixel camera as KT’s answer to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab Android 2.2 tablet expected to hit SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest carrier, sometime in September. And with KT’s take on the Tab priced at KRW300,000 (about $253) or free with KRW27,000 per month contract and 50G WiMax (aka, WiBro in Korea) data plan, it certainly sets the expectation for how Samsung will price its Tab later this week. More pics of this oh too familiar tablet design after the break.

Mac Mini suffers chromatic maltreatment at hands of Colorware

You didn’t seriously think the Mac Mini would be spared, did you? The maniacal customizers over at Colorware have added Apple’s latest bit of desktop furniture to their stable of “have it your way” electronics, with a $250 price tag for the paintjob by itself and a $1,000 levy if you want them to procure the hardware as well. Hey, we know that’s expensive, but somebody’s got to be buying all these crazy-hued gadgets for the company to keep going, right? Anyone willing to own up to it?
