This is a video created by amateur astronomer and Youtuber Yetipc1 of what it would look like if the moon, which normally orbits earth at 384,400km (~238,855-miles), orbited earth at the same distance as the International Space Station, around 420km (260-miles). Apparently it would look huge. Of course that could never happen because the earth would suck the moon right into us and we’d go out like the dinosaurs. Or at least in my daydreams that’s what happens. Plus I’m making out with a hottie when it all goes down.
Normally the Moon orbits much slower than the earth rotates so it rises in the east and sets in the west, however at 420km it orbits much faster, faster than the earth rotates underneath, therefore it will rise in the west and set in the east. …The Moon would orbit very fast, somewhere between 130 mins and 90 mins. …The time in the video is sped up. The moon would transverse the sky slower. Like 10 mins (rough guess)
Okay so apparently the moon COULD orbit the earth so close if it were going fast enough, but being so close would strip the atmosphere from earth, cause the ocean tides to destroy all land life, and all around make earth a shitty place to live. But that’s all just speculation, I say we tractor beam that f***er and see what really happens. Hit the jump for a video of a moon so close you feel like you could reach out and touch it.

Pop-Art In Space: Satellite Being Launched With Alien-Friendly ‘Celestial Charging Station’ Graphics
When the UKube-1 breadbox-sized satellite is launched into orbit this December, it won’t just be carrying instruments to measure radiation and space weather. No, it’s going to be rocking custom Celestial Charging Station graphics that invite space travelers low on power to stick their dongles into one of its power ports and recharge. Just so we’re clear, it’s just art — there aren’t actually any power ports. It’s like a gas station that advertises clean bathrooms. The graphics were designed by artists Jon Gibson and Amanda White of Los Angeles’s iam8bit gallery, and herald a new age in space-art. Me? I’ve always dreamed of having of my finger paintings hanging on a fridge on the moon.
UKube-1 is the UK Space Agency’s first CubeSat mission and is being fully assembled by Scottish satellite company ClydeSpace.
Glasgow-based Clyde Space have been helping to lead a revolution in satellite technology, where now less is more and cheap ” nanosatellites” are being seen as money efficient ways of testing equipment and doing valuable science in orbit.
“[Nanosatellites] open the door to do lots of different things in space,” says Clyde Space CEO Craig Clark. “Within five years I’d like to be making 100 nanosatellites a year [here in Scotland]“.
When reached for comment, one space alien who was struggling to find a power port to connect to on the satellite had this to say, “Good one, earthlings. Nuking your planet.” I say go for it you little green slime turd. “I was joking.” I SAID PUSH THE DEATH-RAY BUTTON, SISSY.
Hit the jump for a close-up and a shot of how big the satellite really is (I told you, it’s a breadbox), as well as a video of what the thing is gonna look like floating in space.
Rdio’s used the past few months to bring an array of improvements to its iOS app — some functional and some cosmetic. To keep the momentum going, the company today released yet another update, including a Station Tuning feature that lets listeners “adjust any station to play more familiar or more adventurous tracks.” Additionally, the app’s Collection tab now sports a redesigned look, which makes for an easier, better-looking way to view album artwork. Rdio says search within has been improved as well, while other undisclosed, under-the-hood UI enhancements are also part of this version. Per usual, we’ve included the download link below.

Paris-based Internet of Things startup Netatmo, which makes personal weather station and air quality sensor devices (as seen in the video above) for use with Android and iOS apps, has just closed a €4.5 million ($ 5.8 million) funding round. It plans to use the funding to launch new connected devices in the second half of this year, including additional indoor air modules (to be announced this month), and also rain and wind meters.
Investors in the round — Netatmo’s first external funding — include Iris Capital, FSN PME, which is the French National Fund for Digital Society, along with Pascal Cagni, Non Executive Director of Vivendi SA and Kingfisher PLC and former Vice-President & General Manager of Apple Europe, Middle East, India and Africa.
Netatmo launched its consumer focused weather station monitoring device last fall. The device allows users to track outdoor weather conditions and environmental conditions indoors — such as air quality and CO2 level — and monitor and chart that data via the corresponding apps.
Although Netatmo is not breaking out device sales data yet, it says its weather stations are currently monitoring the environment in more than 105 countries. ”After a few months on the market, demand continues to grow, and we are experiencing significant increases in sales,” Netatmo CEO Fred Potter noted in a statement. ”Our new financial partners will allow us to pursue further innovations, develop new devices and expand our distribution channels and territories,”
Netatmo said it plans to focus on development and operations throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S., with the goal to expand its headcount as it ramps up the business this year.
Commenting on the funding in a statement, Pascal Cagni added: ”The Internet of Things is the next step in the rise of an even more connected digital world… Thanks to Netatmo’s talented teams and ability to integrate advanced software with state-of-the-art hardware, this company is built to play a leading role in that revolution.”

First ‘express’ flight to the International Space Station cuts travel time from two days to six hours
Usually, trips from the earth to the International Area Station take about two days– however today, the first manned “specific” air travel to the ISS removed and anticipates to make the journey in only 6 hours. The air travel, manned by one NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts, removed today at 4:43 PM EDT from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan; it’s anticipated to dock by 12:10 AM EDT tonight. While this is the first manned flight to make this specific flight (where the Soyuz spacecraft makes 4 orbits of the earth prior to reaching the ISS), a variety of unmanned cargo air travels have currently made the fast journey. When the Soyuz spacecraft arrives, the 3 astronauts will stay at the ISS for the next six months. If you’re interested …
