Engadget's laptop buyer's guide spring 2013 edition

Fast payday loans For Every One

You asked; you got it. When we ran our first-ever laptop buyer’s guide earlier this year, many of you wrote in, requesting that we include more affordable picks (not just, you know, twelve-hundred-dollar Ultrabooks). So with this latest seasonal guide, we’ve added budget and mid-range options, some with touchscreens, some without. The only unfortunate thing? We’re expecting Intel to drop its new Haswell chips sometime this summer, so it should go without saying that it might be worth waiting for the various PC giants to refresh their lineups before committing to anything. If you absolutely can’t wait, though, we’ve picked our favorites, with a particular emphasis on models we don’t think will be going anywhere anytime soon.

We’re fairly certain that the BlackBerry Q10 will make its hometown debut on April 30th, however Thorsten and Co. have not been very precise about when the phone will land in the US. Thanks to the FCC, nevertheless, we understand that it can’t be too far out, as the first BB10 device with a physical QWERTY keyboard has been passed suitable for human usage by the federal firm. We ‘d have guessed that professional keyboardist Alicia Keys would be first in the queue, however she probably got a giveaway ahead of time.

Sony has actually revealed a pair of new mid-range Android smartphones, the Xperia SP and L. The SP is the more fascinating of the pair: it matches in 2012′s flagship mobile phones virtually spec-for-spec, with a 4.6-inch 720p screen, 1.7 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, and an 8-megapixel camera. Sadly, it additionally matches in 2012′s flagships with its OS– it runs the year-old Android 4.1, instead of the current version, 4.2.

Documents revealing spring release for Android Key Lime Pie taken down by Qualcomm

Photo

On Wednesday, Android Police published information from leaked Qualcomm slides that showed the tentative release date for the next version of Android, “Key Lime Pie.” The slides indicate that the Android “K-release” will be announced during “Spring 2013.” The date neatly lines up with this year’s Google I/O, scheduled for May 15-17tth. Shortly after posting the slides, Android Police, and other sites repeating the story, were ordered to remove the information by Qualcomm.

It’s not clear if the takedown was related to the Key Lime Pie timeframe — cited as a “Google Estimated Release” — or information regarding future Qualcomm chip development, but the fact that the chipmaker scrambled to suppress the information indicates that the…

NTT DoCoMo announces 12 new mobile devices for the spring, launches Smart Home initiative

NTT DoCoMo announces 12 new mobile devices for the spring, launches Smart Home initiative

Change of season? You can bet NTT DoCoMo has an armload of new devices to announce — it’s almost a tradition. This time around, the Japanese carrier has revealed 10 new smartphones, two tablets and a mobile WiFi hotspot. Large, 4.5 to 5-inch displays and quad-core processors pepper the entire spring smartphone line, but there are a few notable standouts, including the previously leaked LG Optimus G Pro, Huawei’s Ascend D2 and the NEC Medias W — a curious dual-screen smartphone we first saw at MWC 2012. DoCoMo fills its tablet quota with the Sony Xperia Tablet Z and a carrier branded device called the dtab, a 10.1-inch WiFi slab apparently built for DoCoMo’s Smart Home initiative. Don’t let the name run away with your imagination — the Japanese carrier is focusing on sharing music, video and digital content between smartphones and other home electronics, not automating your apartment.

The dtab is compatible with a handful of carrier exclusive services, such as the dmarket and DoCoMo cloud. It’s not technically part of the carrier’s mobile line, but DoCoMo had one more announcement for spring: an HDMI dongle. The SmartTV dstick gives HDTVs access to the carrier’s dvideo, danime store and dhits services, and can be controlled with via smartphone or a similarly named tablet. Spring hardware will start hitting Japan on January 25th with the Aquos Phone EX, and continue to roll out through March. Read on for the official press release.

Google retiring iGoogle, Google Mini, others for ‘spring cleaning’

Google retiring iGoogle, Symbian Search app, Google Mini, others for 'spring cleaning'

To everything (Turn, Turn, Turn). There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn). Sometimes those seasons can get a bit convoluted, however — or such is the premise of Google’s “Spring cleaning in summer” post, outlining the end of a handful of tech offerings. Because heck, even a company as big as Google has to pick its battles. On the chopping block this time out are the Google Mini enterprise search system, the Google Talk Chatback widget, Google Video, iGoogle and the Symbian search app. Of course, the company won’t be leaving people hanging entirely. Google’s pushing users toward existing properties like the Meebo bar for Talk Chatback and YouTube for Google Video (which already stopped taking uploads a while back), the latter of which will be fully integrated into the more popular video offering come August. More info on what all this means in the source link below.

TiVo Spring update brings new Netflix and YouTube experience

Netflix on the TiVo Premiere

As promised at CES earlier this year, TiVo has released its Spring update with the anticipated new Netflix and YouTube apps, as well as porting parental control options to the Premiere’s HD user interface. Netflix is the most intriguing of the additions, but while TiVo Premiere owners can now watch Netflix 1080p programming with Dolby Digital Plus discrete surround sound, like Hulu Plus, it isn’t a TiVo experience. The new Google-built YouTube app is also like any other streamer and with the exception of search, there isn’t much integration at all. Parental control options can finally be set when using the HD UI, but still isn’t as full featured as it was with the old UI and is a far cry from KidZone. What the update doesn’t do yet however, is complete the HD interface transformation that some Premiere owners have been waiting two years for. Still, we suspect that caveat won’t stop owners from rolling the dice on an update check for their TiVo every day over the next few weeks.

Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors launch today, but dual-core and low-voltage MIA until later in spring

ivy bridge 640 official

Intel launched its highly-anticipated 22-nanometer Ivy Bridge processors today. However, while the initial launch of quad-core processors in the Core i5 and Core i7 families for desktop and full-sized laptops will start immediately, dual-core chips and low-power chips for thin, ultrabook-style computers won’t be available until later this spring, the company revealed. Ivy Bridge marks the shift from 32-nanometer to 22-nanometer transistor technology, with the smaller size bringing enhanced efficiency and more computational power — “about 20 percent more processor performance using 20 percent less average power,” Intel’s PC business chief Kirk Skaugen told the BBC. The new chips also feature “3D” Tri-Gate transistors that add vertical…
