Xperia Z goes on sale at the US Sony Store for $630, Xperia ZL gets a price cut

Americans wanting one of 2013′s Sony flagships have had access to the Xperia ZL for awhile, but they’ve had to chase down an importer if they wanted the glass-backed chic of the Xperia Z. Sony has quietly put that dilemma to rest by offering the Xperia Z through the US Sony Store. For $ 630, locals can get an unlocked version of the flagship in black, purple or white, albeit only with HSPA+ 3G for carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile; there’s no LTE to be found. Those who do want 4G speeds won’t have to pay a premium, however, when Sony is selling the LTE-equipped ZL for the same $ 630. While neither deal will be quite as tempting as subsidized phones at major carriers, those willing to pay full price for Sony gear can now afford to be a little picky.

Sony Xperia L swings by the FCC with North America-friendly 3G

While Sony intrigued us with the Xperia L’s blend of a low-end smartphone with a higher-end camera, it wasn’t very specific on just where we could eventually buy one: “worldwide” doesn’t help, folks. Courtesy of an FCC filing, there’s now a hint that the phone might show up in North America. The L has surfaced at the US agency carrying HSPA-based 3G compatible with the likes of AT&T, Straight Talk and T-Mobile, as well as Canadian carriers of all sizes. Even with a manual included in the filing, though, there’s no telltale clues as to which providers in either country might be interested. Without any built-in LTE, the Xperia L we see here is more likely to reach either smaller networks or go the carrier-independent route — if it comes to North America at all, that is.

Sony prices and dates its 2013 home and shelf audio lineups

Given Sony’s heritage, it’s no surprise that the company loves its audio — but we can imagine that some might be overwhelmed when the company has priced and dated the cores of its 2013 home and shelf audio lineups in one sitting. Don’t worry, we’ll break it all down. On the home audio side, both the BDV-N7100W and BDV-7100W home-theaters-in-a-box (N8100W shown above) are already shipping at respective $ 599 and $ 699 prices with 1,000W 5.1-channel output, internet-linked Blu-ray players and both Bluetooth as well as OneTouch NFC pairing. TV watchers who can wait until June will also see the STR-DN1040, a $ 599 7.2-channel receiver with 4K upscaling, Bluetooth, WiFi and 165W per channel; the $ 449 STR-DN840 receiver, which scales back to 4K passthrough and 150W per channel; and the $ 399 HT-C660 soundbar, which adds NFC pairing to the same wireless mix as the receivers.
Shelf audio is simpler, with every new entry arriving May 27th. Both the LBT-GPX55 (below) and LBT-GPX77 mini stereos offer a respective 1,600W and 1,800W of output alongside Bluetooth, NFC, a CD player (!) and dual USB ports at a $ 499 starting price. Those who don’t need their walls rattled quite so thoroughly can spring for the $ 349 RDH-GTK37iP boombox, which puts out a still-substantial 420W on top of Bluetooth, NFC, an iOS dock and attention-getting strobe lights. That’s a lot information to process, we know. If you’re not satisfied even after that deluge of information, however, Sony’s pressers await after the break.

To share or not to share was never a question for the creation of the PS4 — it was always more about the how. Right from the start, Sony’s upcoming, next-gen console had been planned with a social networking bent, but as Shuhei Yoshida, the company’s head of Worldwide Studios, revealed to Edge, the decision to build a Share button into the DualShock 4 was the result of one first-party developer’s eureka moment, not a cross-SCEI compromise. All credit is due Nathan Gary, creative director at Santa Monica Studio (best known for its God of War series), who successfully pitched the concept of a dedicated controller button to the PS4 team; an idea that was not only quickly met with unanimous praise, but also immediately implemented into the final product. It’s yet further proof that Sony’s learned from its past PS3 fumbling and has crafted a machine for developers, by developers.
