Silent But Violent: Ridiculous Assassin’s Creed III Cosplay

This is a pair of Assassin’s Creed III costumes made by Rick Boer and worn by himself and his wife, Dominique Boer. Rick is cosplaying as Conner from the upcoming AC III title and Dominique as Aveline de Grandpre from the PS Vita’s AC III: Liberation. They … did an excellent job. I like exactly how the outfits even APPEAR LIKE they came out of a computer game. Things I do not wish to see coming out of a computer game? Anything from Dead Area or Silent Hill. I’m serious, a single arm or leg begins poking through the TELEVISION and I’m drinking the f \*\*\* ing Kool-Aid.
Hit the jump for some closeups of the different pieces of the costumes.

Adobe Flash 11.3 checks in with security fixes, OS X silent updater and Firefox sandbox in tow
While feverishly revamping Flash with the all-new Next version — to keep HTML5 from killing it — Adobe is still plugging the current incarnation with smaller updates. To that end, Flash 11.3 just popped out of beta, which sees the company add a few notable goodies for the beleaguered plugin. On top of filling seven critical security holes, Adobe added a background updating feature for Mac OS X and signed the code in preparation for compatibility with Mountain Lion. That way it’ll align it with the upcoming Gatekeeper feature in the next OS X release, though you’ll have to dial its max security down one notch to get it. Lastly, sandboxing — already in Chrome — has been tacked on to Firefox as well, slowing hackers by isolating the plugin from critical system processes. All that fresh duct tape and polyfill should keep Flash rattling along — until Adobe can pull the gleaming Next platform out of the hangar. Meanwhile, click the source for the download links.

Canon touts EOS Rebel T4i with improved video focusing system, EF-S 18-135mm and EF 40mm silent lenses (hands-on)
There wasn’t much reason to upgrade with last year’s T3i, but that’s certainly not the case with the Canon EOS Rebel T4i. This new entry-level DSLR packs a redesigned 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with brand-new focus capabilities, enabling the camera to use both phase- and contrast-detection autofocus when paired with one of two new STM lenses. The center portion of the sensor uses traditional phase-detection technology, while points nearer to the perimeter aid by recognizing contrast in a scene, enabling a more accurate autofocus technique for both stills and video shooting. On the video front, the new lenses — an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM for $ 550 or the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM “pancake” for $ 200 — allow for much more silent zoom and focusing during video capture, so you don’t need to worry about those sensitive stereo mics picking up mechanical noise. The camera still did a bit of focus hunting while recording video during our hands-on, but autofocus performance was quite impressive while capturing stills, even in low light.
On the spec front, there’s an articulating 3-inch Clear View smudge-resistant glass LCD, with a 1.04-megapixel resolution and new capacitive multitouch functionality, letting you pinch and zoom pictures and tap your way through menus just the same — you’ll still have the full array of physical controls if you’d prefer to go that route. There’s the same bounty of video modes available with the T3i and T2i, including 1080 at 30p, 25p and 24p, 1080/60i and 50i, and VGA at 30 and 25 frames-per-second — there’s also a stereo mic on board, along with a dedicated microphone input jack on the side. In burst mode, the T4i can snap up to 5 consecutive frames per second. The camera also includes the same LP-E8 battery pack as previous Rebels, with a 1120mAh capacity. The Rebel T4i will be available in a body-only configuration for $ 850, $ 950 with the 18-55mm kit lens or $ 1200 with the new 18-135mm STM optic, all of which are set to ship later this month. If you feel that the new features don’t justify the price, you’ll rest easy knowing that Canon has no plans to pull the T3i from store shelves — that T2i, however, is destined for retirement.

Better Place takes its electric vehicle network in Israel for a silent spin
Better World has been striving for, erm, a nicer planet with its battery-swapping approach to electric vehicles since as far back as 2008. There’s been a modicum of success, with outlets and swapping stations peppered as far and wide as Denmark, California, Australia and Japan. Now, the Associated Press reports that world’s first nationwide electric car network — this time in Israel — has been given its first test. This only equates to four battery stations at the moment, with a further 40 to follow in the second half of the year. However, the firm maintains, that even with the current infrastructure, users could comfortably drive the entire length of the nation. Renault will sell a version of its Fluence EV customized to work with the battery stations for $ 32,000, with different mileage options on offer. Is this the future of electric motoring? We’re don’t know, but anything that’s this much quicker than overnight charging is fine by us.

Silent Hill HD Collection delayed, still coming in March with Downpour and Memories

Silent Hill HD Collection has been pushed back two weeks from its March 6th launch date, Konami revealed in a press release earlier today. The compilation, which contains remastered versions of Silent Hill 2 and 3, will now land on store shelves March 20th — a long way off from its initial September / October 2011 launch window.
For those of you keeping track, that means the latter part of March will bring us three straight weeks of new Silent Hill releases, with Silent Hill: Downpour scheduled for March 14th, and Silent Hill: Book of Memories due out March 27th. Regardless of how much you may be looking forward to this absolute nightmare sandwich, we think we can all agree that, man, we’re looking forward to a decapitation-free April.

Taser’s on-officer cameras catch you in the act, right to remain silent imperative
Taser International has released an update to its on-officer system, the AXON Flex. The new rig provides law enforcement officials with body-mounted cameras that capture video evidence “from the officer’s perspective.” These recording devices can be affixed to the hat, collar, shoulder or on specially designed Oakley shades and are ruggedized to IPX2 standards. That’s all well and good, but what really gives this setup nerd-cred is what can be done with the captured video. Through a partnership with evidence.com, the Flex system can send footage to a “military grade” cloud-based storage system for safe keeping; there is also an on-site storage option for IT-savvy forces. As if that weren’t enough, Taser and Looxcie have co-developed a smartphone app — available for iOS or Android — that will allow officers to review captured clips and add GPS coordinates, notes or timestamps. The system’s goal is to protect officers from “false claims, enhance public trust [and] decrease litigation.” AXON Flex is set to be released in Q1 and will have a base price of around $ 700. Don’t tase film me, bro.

Silverlight hits 5.0, Microsoft silent as to its future
Last we heard, there were whispers that Redmond’s favorite runtime / framework / Flash-killer was due for a fresh release “soon.” Confirming those rumors is version 5.0 of Microsoft’s cross-platform Silverlight, now available for download. Headlining the release is hardware decoding of H.264 streams, improved postscript printing and a better graphics stack, replete with support for things in the third dimension. Rumors that Silverlight’s own luminance is fading still go unanswered, without confirmation or denial from Microsoft — but why let uncertainty get you down? Hit the source and turn that frown upside down.

Cooler Master launches Silent Pro Hybrid Fanless Series of power supplies
Desktop PC power supplies are tough to get excited about, no matter how many features they cram in. But Cooler Master’s Silent Pro Hybrid Fanless series is actually pretty alluring. The supply isn’t actually “fanless” but it does have a fanless mode that can be used to minimize machine noise, at least until the load crosses the 200W threshold. Add to that a 90-percent efficiency, fully modular cables and a control panel that lets you manually adjust the speed of your system fans and you’re looking at quite the compelling product for the DIY desktop enthusiast. As you could have guessed though, all these fancy features don’t come cheap. Cooler Master is offering three different models: 850W, 1050W and 1300W, which range in price from $ 200 to $ 300 — a sizable chunk of change to drop on any component. They’ll be shipping this month to the US and Asia, with Europe to follow in November. Check out the complete PR after the break.

Latest Boxee Box update leaves surround sound speakers silent on stereo sources

It wasn’t long after the Boxee Box v1.1 update started to roll out that users with surround sound systems found a major issue with it: besides the removal of volume controls (confirmed to return as an optional setting in the next update), there was an undocumented change to the way it handled stereo PCM audio sources for users with surround sound systems. Instead of sending it on to the user’s receiver as a two channel source so it could be processed to fill all the speakers, it is sent as a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio source and only plays audio through the front left and right speakers, with no audio coming from the center channel or rear speakers. That’s a major problem for people trying to watch Netflix streams, MLB.tv, listen to certain lossless audio files or any other stereo audio source and enjoy an audio experience that takes advantage of their setup.
A Boxee developer on AVSForum indicated the change was due to a licensing agreement between the manufacturer of the box, D-Link, and Dolby, and would need to be left up to them for a fix. We’ve reached out to both Boxee and D-Link for word on their issue and while we haven’t received a detailed response, there is a notation on the JIRA bug tracker for the issue by “yuvalt” indicating the team is working on a fix for this and other issues which will hopefully be available within days. Check out the forum threads for more detail on the issue as well as temporary workarounds, we’ll let you know if we get an official response on why this is happening and if / when there’s a fix incoming.
[Thanks, Neil]
