Some Pebble smartwatches bricking after shutdown, company replacing faulty units

Fast payday loans For Every One

It appears that Pebble’s smartwatch is officially feeling its largest growing pain since debuting just two months ago. A five-page long (and growing) thread on the company’s forum has some owners describing a bug that’s leaving their Pebbles pebbled bricked after shutdown. Pebble’s Eric Migicovsky let us know that the company is actively replacing affected units, while examining those being sent in to find out the root cause:

We’ve had reports of this issue, and we understand of course that it’s annoying for users. We’re replacing any Pebbles for users who report this issue. We’re reviewing the Pebbles that get returned, working to get to the bottom of the issue. We have our support team ready to follow up to any user that reports this issue.

As it stands, there’s no word on whether firmware update 1.9 has any role in keeping the devices from turning on after being shut down. Owners have further reported that no amount of charging their Pebble will help it to actually come back to life. We’ve reached out to the company for more info on the matter (including nailing down how many units the company has replaced so far), and we’ll be sure to keep you updated. For now, let us know whether your experience with Pebble has been rocky at all so far.

Update: That was fast — apparently Pebble has received about 30 reports of this issue since Friday. Here’s the official word from Migicovsky:

We’re tracking a few reports of this issue. Up to Friday, we’ve had 20-30 reports (out of 30,000+ pebbles in the field). We’ve gotten several back to the office, and we’re getting to the bottom of it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Windows Mobile Marketplace shutdown pushed back to May 17th

Motorola q9c windows mobile 6

Microsoft had previously told users still rocking classic Windows Mobile smartphones that the marketplace for those devices would be closing down on May 9th. Today it’s circulating an email pegging the date as May 17th and the company’s notice page confirms the date. Users can and should update any apps they’ve purchased from the store before that day, but unfortunately those apps will become unavailable if the device is hard reset or otherwise wiped clean. If that happens, you’ll be on your own to contact the individual developers who created your apps one by one to make your case for getting it directly.

The extra 8 days are perhaps cold comfort to those gripping legacy Windows Mobile devices — but at this point, well, there’s a darn…

HP’s Todd Bradley refutes webOS shutdown rumors

HP’s Todd Bradley showed up on Bloomberg last night for a quick round of webOS damage control. Following a report from the The Guardian, saying the company would in fact kill the webOS division, Bradley referred to the report as an “unfounded rumor.” He went on to say that “accolades for the operating system are broadly known” and that the company is focusing on how to “effectively utilize that phenomenal software.” Of course, there’s always a chance that the best way to utilize the troubled OS is to sell it to the highest bidder, but Bradley said HP will weigh all the “data and information” before making “the right decision.” For now, the operating system’s still kicking it in limbo. The full interview awaits you at the source link below.

Google pinpoints shutdown dates for Wave, Translate APIs (amongst others)

‘Tis a sad day in the world of Google… at least for developers who use any of a handful of ill-fated APIs. As the search giant’s API list has grown in recent months, it’s making the decision to cull a few in the effort of “spring cleaning.” In fact, a grand total of seven new APIs were launched during Google I/O alone, but it looks as if the end is nigh for the Blog Search API, Books Data API, Image Search API, News Search API, Patent Search API, Safe Browsing API (v1 only), Translate API, Transliterate API, Video Search API and Virtual Keyboard API. Of those, Wave is most unsurprising, but Translate likely hurts the most — particularly for jetsetters who relied on those baked-in services to wrap their heads around various tongues. According to Goog, the Translate API has been officially deprecated “due to the substantial economic burden caused by extensive abuse.” A pretty ominous phrase, to be sure, and further proof that a few rotten apples can ruin things for the whole of us. Hit the links below to get a glimpse of the full damage — we’re warning you, it ain’t pretty.

Swedish Pirate Party launches ISP to raise funds for its impending shutdown trial

As a fan of Swedish electoral politics, you’re obviously aware that the Pirate Party (or “Piratpartiet”) has been bedeviling officials in that Nordic country since 2006, doing crazy things like hosting the Pirate Bay’s servers and launching the Relakks commercial darknet — all the while flying the flag for privacy rights, copyright reform, and state transparency. And now? Northern Lights TV has recently posted an interview with Gustav Snipe, CEO of Pirate ISP, the party’s very own service provider. How long can an ISP that refuses to monitor traffic or keep user logs keep the Swedish government at bay? We’ll probably find out soon enough: it’s already providing beta access in Lund, with plans to go nationwide at the end of the summer. Video after the break.
