Overheating HTC Evo Shift Burns Owner
A Columbus, Ohio woman found that her HTC Evo Shift had branded her after overheating while it was under her waistband. The woman, Jennifer Grago, reported that she was using the phone’s FM radio while she did yard work.
“I didn’t have pockets so I just put the phone in the band of my sweats. Seemed like an alright option… I felt my phone getting warm so I moved it and trucked on. Figured sweatpants and 70 some degrees was a factor. Went to move it again and it hurt like a #%&@! and skin with it. I swear to god I almost passed out,” she wrote.
Best Buy, where she purchased the phone, told her that phones need “correct ventilation” and should be placed in form-fitting casing.
The phone left a clear outline of the casing on her skin. Phones, which are in essence compact radios, can easily overheat for various reasons but for a device to overheat so egregiously is frightening. The phone is two years old and is currently available for free with contract on Sprint’s network.

Microsoft’s Next Xbox Said To Shift To x86 Architecture Courtesy Of AMD System-On-A-Chip
Microsoft ’ s following Xbox, which can get an initial unveiling as early as following month, will utilize an AMD system-on-a-chip according to a new Bloomberg report. The new AMD SoC will imply that Microsoft is transferring to an x86-based system architecture, which Sony ’ s upcoming PlayStation 4 is likewise embracing. The change is terrific news for AMD, and for players, and bad news for AMD ’ s chief competing Intel.
The new Microsoft console will be running a “ Jaguar ” CPU, which is likewise exactly what ’ s going into Sony ’ s PS4, alongside a Radeon graphics processor from ATI, an AMD subsidiary. The resemblance in between the 2 SoCs utilized in each next-gen console should go a long way toward silencing problems from designers that it ’ s too challenging and resource-intensive to establish for each sort of console. A shared x86 architecture suggests that it ’ ll be much easier to port titles, both between consoles and from the COMPUTER.
For AMD, it suggests obtaining access to a much bigger chunk of the console gaming market, at an essential juncture: the desktop and note pad PC market is reducing, dealing with increasing infringement from devices like the iPad, meaning there ’ s less room to vie with Intel for market share in an area where Intel already clearly controls. The console sector hasn ’ t precisely been a shining beacon of growth itself, however with a hardware refresh imminent, AMD is in the best position to capitalize must consumer interest as soon as again be caught by fancy new console devices.
The issue with Microsoft ’ s choice to supposedly alter over to AMD is that it will likely render games made for the 360 incompatible with the next-generation platform. But long-term, the decision implies it ’ s much easier for designers to deal with, which ought to equate to a reduction of monetary stress on game studios that are already dealing with income crunches which are forcing cost-cutting measures. The console special may be more of a rarity, however gamers perk, and we might likewise see shorter advancement cycles resulting in even more regular game releases.
An additional party left out of the enjoyable might be the Wii U, which utilizes a PowerPC based processor under the hood. However overall this is great information for gamers, considering that it might both free of cost up resources for designers to invest on breakthrough and R&D, and suggests both consoles will act much even more like house enjoyment Computers based around the TELEVISION.

Samsung clarifies camera production shift, confirms commitment to point-and-shoot models
We’ve heard reports that Samsung has shifted focus at some of its camera manufacturing facilities away from point-and-shoot cameras with the objective of ramping up production of its compact mirrorless models. And while this move implies that the company’s pocketable compacts could be doomed, that’s simply not the case. We spoke with Reid Sullivan, Samsung’s Senior Vice President of Mobile Entertainment, who reinforced the company’s continuing commitment to developing and manufacturing point-and-shoot models — in short, pocketable cameras remain a focus for the company, which simply made manufacturing adjustments to accommodate an anticipated increase in demand for recently-launched NX20, NX210 and NX1000. Point-and-shoots, for better or worse, are here to stay, and Sullivan explained that while we’re unlikely to see new sub-$ 100 cameras make their debut, there’s plenty in the works on the SMART front, with new launches in store for upcoming events like Photokina and CES. Whether there will continue to be demand for point-and-shoots remains to be seen, and while consumers are clearly turning to smartphones for casual shooting, Samsung appears to be in no hurry to abandon the point-and-shoot form-factor.

ROCCAT Power-Grid app, Phobo gaming keyboard shift PC controls to your phone
Razer’s switchblade concept may not have made it out of CES 2011, but its dynamic, adaptive keys lived on, both in the outfit’s Star Wars: The Old Republic keyboard and Blade laptop. The hardware is slick, to be sure, but what if you could snag similar functionality for free from your local app marketplace? That’s what ROCCAT hopes to deliver with its newly announced Power-Grid application. In addition to providing quick-key hungry gamers with a programmable touchscreen grid of applications and in-game macros, the handheld suite will let iOS and Android users monitor their gaming PC’s vital statistics (such as CPU status, RAM usage, hard drive space, etc), manage Facebook, TeamSpeak, Skype and Twitter traffic, and even fine tune their audio settings — all without the need to minimize their game.
Of course, delegating all of your text chatter to your smartphone means you’ll be tapping up your responses on its itty-bitty touchscreen keyboard — at least until ROCCAT finishes its companion keyboard, Project Phobo. The modular PC keyboard not only provides a dock for your Power-Grid equipped mobile, but also lets you respond to texts, chats and tweets using its full array of keys. Pairing your phone with the Phobo will even route voice calls to your PC’s gaming headset, leaving you free to continue to rack up kills without missing important business calls. The German peripheral outfit will be rolling out the beta to iOS devices after CeBIT, and says an Android version is scheduled for release at Gamescom 2012. Hit the break for the official press release and a look at the Phobo keyboard.
