Acer Aspire S7 review (13-inch): great Ultrabook, a shame about the battery life

Acer Aspire S7 review

Fast payday loans For Every One

Back in June, when Acer initially announced the Aspire S7 Collection, two things appeared noteworthy: these were the business’s very first touchscreen Ultrabooks, for one, and they were conveniently its best-made. Whereas the earlier S3 and S5 skew a little bit dull, the S7 is made from aluminum, with either a metal or Gorilla Glass lid, depending on whether you choose the 11 – or 13-inch variation. What’s more, it has a 1080p IPS display, which looked simply as nice in our initial hands-on as the spec slab would have you think. Throw in an option of Core i5 and i7 processors and a RAID 0 SSD configuration, and you can effortlessly anticipate the same quick performance we tape-recorded on the S5. So is this it? Has Acer finally built an Ultrabook we can heartily recommend? Even more to the point, does the 13-inch model get enough things right to justify that $ 1,400 starting rate? Learn in our review after the break.

Toshiba Excite 10 review: a 10-inch ICS tablet that puts the Thrive to shame

Toshiba Excite 10 review

In the tablet market, big as it is, one notion generally holds true: thinner equals better. Toshiba, for example, surely tried to equate a svelte silhouette with a premium product in its super-slim Excite 10 LE. And indeed, its 1.18-pound body and solid Honeycomb experience add up to tablet that puts Toshiba’s earlier Thrives to shame. That $ 530 model is definitely priced like a high-end tablet, but it’s accompanied by a new, lower-priced Toshiba slate, the Excite 10.

For $ 450, you get a tablet with a tad more meat on its bones, but that increase in weight and thickness comes with some more powerful specs: a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor with 1GB of RAM — not to mention Ice Cream Sandwich. While you can probably guess which of these slates makes a stronger contender (hint: the one without the “LE”), figuring out the Toshiba Excite 10′s place in the grand hierarchy of tablets takes a little more exploration. Luckily, that’s what we’re here for, so join us past the break as we do our best to get through the review without a single “excite” pun.

Custom-built ‘Triport Spire’ puts our Lego skills to shame

lego triport spire

It’s no secret that we have a certain affinity for brick-based building at The Verge. Lately we’ve been be wasting away in our own Minecraft world, but we can always make time to admire the insane Lego creations that some people come up with. Tim Goddard, perhaps better known by his Flickr user name Rogue Bantha, is one such builder. His latest project is the insanely detailed “Triport Spire”: a sci-fi inspired space port. Not one to leave well-enough alone, Goddard decided to include motorized elevators, working lights in the hangers, and even a small fleet of spaceships to round out the design. We’re not sure how many pieces the build included, or how long it took Goddard to create the “Triport Spire,” but the level of detail is really…

FPV servo controlled plane grabs epic vacation footage, puts old family videos to shame (video)

By the time winter rolls around, Alistair Roberts will probably remember his summer vacation a heckuva lot better than the rest of us. Why? Because he brought an FPV plane to record his mountain biking holiday in the Spanish sun. With a GoPro camera mounted on the servo-powered cradle, Alistair piloted the plane by moving his head and using a remote control — all while streaming first person video from the cockpit into a pair of goggles. By pairing the high tech toy with another GoPro on his dad’s mountain bike, and a stationary camera on the ground, Alistair was able to create a truly amazing vacation video from 1200 – 1500 feet in the air traveling around 20kmph (12mph) — way cooler than any of the ones our dads recorded back in the day. Check out the video after the break.

[Thanks, @btudor]

Nao robot grabs a head-mounted camera, puts your photographic skills to shame

You see, herein lies the problem. At a glance, Nao looks humane. Even kind. In fact, it’s bruited that he’s helped on a few missions in his day. But underneath, he’s a cold-blooded talent snatcher, and thanks to a little push from one Raghudeep Gadde, he might just capture your vacation in a manner that’s superior to your own. As the story goes, this here scientist at the International Institute of Information Technology in Hydrabad, India, converted the humanoid into quite the shooter. He strapped a camera on its dome, and then programmed it to follow a pair of iron-clad photographic guidelines: the rule of thirds, and the golden ratio. Purportedly, Nao does a ton of analysis before finally deciding on how to compose and capture a shot, and for his next trick, he’ll run circles around your existing Lightroom actions. So much for perfecting your craft, eh?

Aussie Retailer May Shame Rivals By Offering Free HDMI Cables

The cable controversy continues, and people will continue buying $ 50 3-foot HDMI cables, but anyone with sense isn’t paying more than a dollar or two per foot. One Australian retailer is fed up with their fellow electronics stores’ habit of trying to sell expensive cables with new TVs and computers, and has decided they’re going to show them by just giving the cables away.

The chain, Kogan, notes that the cheapest cables will perform the same as others, and that the other stores are pretty much deliberately ripping you off with their talk about specs and so on. So, you buy a TV, you get an HDMI cable. They might expand it to PCs as well, though of course

I think our readers are pretty savvy, so they won’t get conned on something like cables, but the average window shopper or out-of-touch TV buyer might easily get upsold to a hundred dollar purchase they don’t need. It’s good to see a retailer fighting the good fight here.

Mizzou Professor says nantenna solar sheet soaks up 90 percent of the sun’s rays, puts sunscreen to shame

Photovoltaics suffer from gross inefficiency, despite incremental improvements in their power producing capabilities. According to research by a team led by a University of Missouri professor, however, newly developed nantenna-equipped solar sheets can reap more than 90 percent of the sun’s bounty — which is more than double the efficiency of existing solar technologies. Apparently, some “special high-speed electrical circuitry” is the secret sauce behind the solar breakthrough. Of course, the flexible film is currently a flight of fancy and won’t be generating juice for the public anytime soon. The professor and his pals still need capital for commercialization, but they believe a product will be ready within five years. Take your time, guys, it’s not like global warming’s getting worse.

Audi Auto Union Type C e-tron study puts your pow-pow-Power Wheels to shame

Top speed of 18mph, and a range of 15 miles? Charges in only two hours? No, this isn’t the future of transportation we’re talking about here, it’s a toy. A toy from Audi, of all places. The company has created this electric-powered and half-scale recreation of an Auto Union Type C, grand prix racer of the late 1930s, and done it in e-tron guise, applying the moniker from its grown-up line of EVs, like the luscious e-tron Spyder. This one’s intended for kids of all ages — so long as they’re shorter than 5’11” — and it will be on display at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg. At this point there’s no mention of a plan to produce it nor a price if Audi did, but surely it’s one of those “if you have to ask” things — that body is entirely made of carbon fiber, and that stuff doesn’t come cheap.
