Secom offers a private security drone, serves as our eyes when we’re away

Secom is offering nervous offices an unusual solution in exactly what’s supposedly the first airborne drone for exclusive security. Its customized Ascending Technologies quadrotor could take to the air if there’s a burglary and record exactly what’s happening, even in areas that would normally represent blind spots. The automaton can additionally track moving topics with a laser sensor and knows enough to keep its distance. Japanese companies desiring Secom’s robot sentry will need to wait until after April 2014, when they can lease one at about & yen; 5,000 ($ 58) per month; the investment might be beneficial just to freak out a few prospective intruders.

Google serves up reindeer games with Santa Tracker, lets St. Nick message your besties
![]()
Sure, Google’s not in the Santa Monitoring NORAD cabal anymore, but that’s not stopping it from rolling out St. Nicholas-related goodies. It just launched a collection of new games, including a chimney / gift dropping difficulty, a rocket-powered elf race and a Santa talk that lets you send a droll vacation greeting to your “hoodlum besties.” You could even play Rudolph for a lark and drag Santa around in his sleigh– badly, in our case– so inspect the source (tip: click the red box at the bottom left) for some holiday cheer, Mountain View-style.

Nintendo patent application tech tracks your DS from above, serves as tour guide
Nintendo is already guiding you through the Louvre with a 3DS, but a newly published US patent application takes that kind of tourism to a very literal new level. Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s concept describes a way to direct lost tourists by beaming position information through an overhead grid of infrared transmitters to a mobile device (portrayed as a DS Lite) held by the confused visitor below. The handheld then talks wirelessly to a server that lights up floor displays with maps and directions, and a helpful app on the device lets visitors pick their route while they read up on sightseeing tips. Like with any patent, there’s no certainty that Nintendo will act on the idea and start wiring up museums with IR blasters, but the January 2012 patent may still be fresh in a frequently inventive mind like Miyamoto’s.

Sony serves up US Vita manual two months early, theoretical gamers rejoice

Jealous that Japan has first dibs on Sony’s next generation portable? Or maybe you imported a PlayStation Vita, and need a little help navigating the Kanji-laden menus? Either way, Sony has a bone to throw you — an online Vita user’s guide, and in English, to boot. In addition to basic console operations, the online manual details the handheld’s major features and apps, including Party, Near, the PS Store, a Photos app, the web browser, remote play and the Vita’s video and music apps. The guide also mentions a few limitations, for instance, PSN video downloads will be standard definition only — if you want to watch something in 720p, you’ll need to load it yourself using the Vita’s Content Manager. It also confirms the handheld’s single account lock-down, noting that even your console’s memory card is tied to your PSN account — it simply won’t work on your friend’s Vita. Curious about battery life, 3G data usage trackers and remote play restrictions? Hit the source and dive in, you’ve got two months to study up.

B&N Serves Up 1 Million Nook App Downloads
Barnes & Noble just announced that Nook Color users have downloaded over 1 millon apps so far, including Angry Birds, Drawing Pad, and Pulse. Obviously 1 million apps in comparison to the numbers downloaded (notice they didn’t say “sold”) is fairly paltry but it’s a great start.
This bit of news confirms what we’ve been saying for a while: the Nook is kind of a stealth Android device and, barring problems with processer power and general usability, it’s a fine entry-level tablet.
Barnes & Noble launched its App Store on April 24 and 1 million downloads in about a month isn’t too shabby. The only thing holding the store back is probably the pricing. The minimum pricing is set to $ 2.99, which prevents more casual app discovery.
NOOK Apps™ Downloads by NOOK Color™ Customers
Milestone Reached Just One Week After NOOK App Shopping Made Available to All NOOK Color Customers
Angry Birds, Drawing Pad, Fliq Calendar and Pulse Among Most Popular Apps
New York, New York – May 16, 2011 – Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, announced a major new milestone for its recently updated award-winning NOOK Color Reader’s Tablet™. Just one week after the company made its free software update featuring popular NOOK Apps available over the air for all NOOK Color customers, customers have made more than one million apps downloads. NOOK Color customers are enjoying access to a variety of popular NOOK Apps and downloading a selection of both paid and free apps that get even more out of their Reader’s Tablet, and have given the top 10 paid and free NOOK Apps the highest 4 or 5 star rating.
All NOOK Apps are optimized for NOOK Color’s stunning 7-inch color touchscreen. The top five paid NOOK Apps are Angry Birds, Drawing Pad, Solitaire, Aces Jewel Hunt and Astraware Mahjong. Among the top five free NOOK Apps are Fliq Calendar, Fliq Notes, Pulse, NOOK Word of the Day™ and Fliq Tasks, which help keep customers organized and informed on the highly portable NOOK Color. With the recent v1.2 software update, Barnes & Noble brought the most-requested tablet features to its bestselling NOOK Color, which, in addition to NOOK Apps, includes full-featured built-in email, enhanced Web experience and more exciting content for adults and children. The device, which had already been acclaimed as the best reading device on the market, is now the best tablet value on the market at just $ 249.
“Our recent software update to NOOK Color delivered the most requested tablet features by our customers, including the ability to shop for and download high-quality apps. Reaching over a million app downloads in just a week since the launch of NOOK App shopping for all NOOK Color customers exceeded expectations, and is an exciting milestone for our developers, publishing partners, and most importantly for our rapidly growing NOOK Color user base,” said William Lynch, Chief Executive Officer of Barnes & Noble. “Our stores and booksellers have been a key part of educating our large NOOK customer base on the terrific applications available for them. We’re building on the early success of our NOOK Apps offering by scaling our collection of popular apps with the thousands of developers who’ve approached us, while ensuring we continue to deliver the high-quality experience NOOK Color is known for.
Barnes & Noble continues to bring NOOK Color customers new applications from leading third-party developers and content providers for the whole family to enjoy. In the past weeks, Barnes & Noble has added new NOOK Apps including QuickOffice Pro, FriendCaster for Facebook, UrbanDaddy, more games from Concrete Software including Aces Traffic Pack, Aces Cribbage and PBA Bowling 2, FlightView Elite, RepliGo Reader, and 3001 Wisdom quotes. Recently added NOOK Apps for children include Bloki, My First Alphabet Sights & Sounds and CardDroid Math flash cards. Through the Shop area on the device, NOOK Color customers can easily explore NOOK Apps, available in categories including Play, Organize, Learn, Explore, Lifestyle, News and Kids. Approximately half of the collection available for $ 2.99 or less and the vast majority priced at $ 5.99 or less.

Self-healing polymer serves up quick fixes under UV rays (video)

As many self-healing polymers as we’ve seen roll across our screens, we never really tire of them — chalk it up to our unending quest for perfection, but we like our gadgets devoid of nicks and scratches. Lucky for us, a team of scientists that shares our need for clean has produced a material that fixes its imperfections in a mere 60 seconds when exposed to UV light. The typically rigid material basically melts down when exposed to rays of a specific wavelength, allowing it to fill in any nicks or dings. When the light is lifted, the polymer goes back to its original form, and voila — the surface is like new. Its creators say the material could be used on everything from cars to dining room tables, but we’ve already come up with laundry list of devices that could do with a truly scratch resistant surface. Video of the stuff in action after the break.

Iomega serves up adorable 1.8-inch External USB 3.0 SSD pocket drives

Some might say that you have somewhat of a problem when calling a solid state drive “cute,” but what do they know, anyway? Iomega’s newest batch of external SSDs are easily the most adorable we’ve seen, as these 1.8-inchers can just about slip into any oversized Fifth Pocket that you may have. Available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB sizes, the diminutive drives support USB 3.0 and are built to be lugged around and occasionally dropped, stepped on or used as a stress-relief tool. Specifically, the metal enclosure is engineered to handle drops from up to ten feet, and the 256-bit hardware encryption ensures that only you and your cronies will see what’s inside. The company’s also tossing in its Protection Suite (loaded with anti-virus, cloning and backup applications), and it’ll be hawking these in early November for $ 229, $ 399 and $ 749 from least capacious to most. Oh, and that noise you hear? A hundred million USB 3.0 flash drives getting all sorts of perturbed.
