Hands-On With Sergey Brin’s Personal Set Of Google Glass

IMGT4295

Outside of authorized Googlers, a handful of folks have actually just been given a canned demo of Google Glass, including myself. I ’ m living in the future and the future is now!

While brief, I demoed Sergey ’ s own personal set of Glass. They ’ re remarkably light in weight and worked over my existing pair of eyeglasses. In its present version, the battery pack is positioned on the right side and counterbalances the circuitry and camera hub, so it feels rather weightless.

The demo itself was fed with the one lens on the right side of some fireworks and audio with the last only being available in through the right side. Per Sergey ’ s tip I cupped my right ear to really hear the audio. Panning your head around offers up an AR experience. Video quality was relatively unsatisfactory but, once again, these are prototypes and Sergey admitted the demo is old.

Notices are currently served up to Glass wearers through a “ ding ” that prompts the user to tilt his or her head up to review the actual message.

I ’ ll have a bit more on Glass later today but here ’ s a higher-res picture with another pair of Glasses.

Sergey Brin demos Project Glass on stage at Google IO

It’s hard to disregard Google’s X Lab-born Project Glass. News of the slim-lined, scifi goggles’ existence initially emerged this past February and it had not been long after that Mountain View’s own elite began to gasconade the heads-up display in public. While little of the device’s real application and functionality is known, we have actually been privy to particular features over the past few months, like photo sharing to Google + and also its capacity to overlay Maps. Though product lead Steve Lee shrugged off rumors of a late 2012 launch, it does appear the business’s itching to spill a couple of even more (jelly) beans at today’s I / O conference.

Sergey Brin simply rushed onstage at Google I/O using the glass units to provide us a brief demo courtesy of a skydive over San Francisco. Video recording of the jump, executed by four divers in a blimp, is being streamed live with Google Hangouts to attendees at the Moscone Center.

Sergey Brin Shows Of His Google Glass Prototype

Screen Shot 2012-05-31 at 8.14.01 AM

I would totally embed this video but WordPress won’t let us, so here it is. It’s essentially a quick run-through of Google Glass thanks to Sergey Brin. He even gave them to California Lieutenant Governer Gavin Newsom who got to try them on.

The verdict? They’re pretty cool and they’ll be available sometime next year. There is apparently a touch sensitive pad on the side. This is part of a longer video that will air on June 1.

I’m really conflicted when it comes to these things. On one hand I’m really excited about usable wearable computing and, on the other hand, I’ve never, ever seen it work well. Here’s hoping Google has the chops to pull it off.
