Sean Parker and Lars Ulrich talk Napster vs Metallica, hug it out

Fast payday loans For Every One

One of today’s many, many Spotify statements was that fabulous thrashers Metallica would be coming to the streaming solution. As component of the announcement CEO Daniel Ek brought out the bands infamously outspoken drummer Lars Ulrich and Spotify board participant Sean Parker who, as you could bear in mind, had a hand in founding Napster. While there was some broad discussion about the direction of the new music sector and the future of songs consumption, a large portion of the half hour-long discussion focused on the common history of the two and the legal in between the lead-in file sharing service and the band. The 2 were surprisingly cordial, if slightly uneasy looking, and dug deep into the information of exactly what both called a “street battle” in between the parties. Ultimately, both confessed that things got blown out of percentage and rose unnecessarily. However there additionally appeared to be some admission by Lars that there was an element of Luddism to his band’s response. To see the whole, exceptionally interesting discussion, check out the video after the break.

Spotify director Sean Parker: Apple tried to keep Spotify out of the United States

Daniel Ek and Sean Parker Spotify

Daniel Ek (co-founder of Spotify) and Sean Parker (Director at Spotify) just took the stage here at D10, with Walt Mossberg asking the two about the company’s impact in America, negotiations with record labels and — perhaps surprisingly — its links with Apple. Outside of confirming that there’s still around 10 million Spotify users in the States (with around three million of those being of the paid variety), the duo also confirmed that it’s working daily to improve the catalog. Said Ek: “We’re up to 18 million songs, growing at 10,000 or 20,000 songs per day — it’s very much a growing catalog.” Walt was curious as to why iTunes had upwards of 30 million tracks, and why all of the services simply don’t have the same library, but both players were quick to brush off the topic and pivot directly to the importance of playlists.

Ek stated: “If you look at iTunes, the vast majority of songs haven’t been purchased by anyone — it’s driven by hits. We see 80 percent of our whole catalog listened to.” Following that, Parker contributed: “The playlist is now the CD. It used to be a few songs were wanted by the consumer, and the rest of it was garbage. It’s the new mixtape, but accelerated on a massive scale.” As it turns out, Spotify actually sells “bundles” (which are glorified playlists) as pay products in Europe, and when Walt asked why these weren’t available in America, Parker obliged: “We just haven’t released it yet.” In other words, they’re coming soon.

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, an ongoing feature where we take a look back at our youth and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today, we have our very own Associate Editor, Sean Buckley.

Growing Up Geek: Sean Buckley

The hardest question I was ever asked as a kid was “what do you want to be when you grow up?” When the boys all cried “Fireman!,” and the girls unanimously pledged their life to marine biology, I came up short. Growing up? I hadn’t planned on that.

Peter Pan complex (and book collection) aside, I had it as good as any boy during the 80s / 90s split. I grew-up in the pre-internet stone-age, when the world was still a mystery that couldn’t be Wiki’d away. Playground rumors went without debunk, and wild stories ran amok across the schoolyard — pixies in England, aliens in New Mexico, and magical robot cars in Japan. The world was a fantastic, impossible place. It still is, but I’d be lying if I said the finality of reality isn’t a small disappointment compared to the lies I loved as a child. With the information superhighway still under construction, I had to find other ways to spend my summers. Sure, countless hours were wasted well spent saving 8-bit princesses (and the world of course), but the best weeks of summer were had at Boy Scout camp, the County Fair, and trudging across the country on family road trips.
