ESPN launches more second screen coverage with golf’s US Open

ESPN is further boosting its major sports coverage by producing a raft of extra material for golf enthusiasts at the US Open. And the outlet will be doing the same during the British Open, along with Wimbledon, the US Open and Australian Open for tennis. The network is employing a special team during the tournament (including some not normally involved in golf coverage) to supplement the main ESPN broadcasts with featured group and hole coverage, hole flyovers, shot tracking and more. Some of the extra goodies will appear on ESPN3, DIRECTV, and USOpen.com. All that means you might need to drag that extra TV out of the spare room, and possibly your Xbox, laptop or tablet. Who says watching sports reduces your attention span?

Sony RX100 sequel leaks in Japanese manual images, adds tilting screen, hot shoe and WiFi

We were more than a little smitten with Sony’s original RX100, a high-end Cybershot point-and-shoot housing a notable 1-inch 20.2-megapxiel CMOS sensor alongside a f/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens. It looks like there were enough customers that thought the same, because SonyAlphaRumors has gleaned several images from the manual for a sequel device. The site has more to share, but it’s checking its translations first. In the meantime, these initial images already point to some notable hardware additions. Alongside a screen that can tilt up and down (plus a light sensor to adjust brightness automatically), the mark two RX100 will apparently catch up with Sony’s NEX series, adding built-in WiFi too. There’s also the addition of a hot shoe for mics and other peripherals, but fear not: there’s still the built-in flash to the left of it. Naming, pricing and availability are still unknowns, but according to the site’s mole, the camera will get formally announced later this month on June 27.

Nokia has been working on additional firmware improvements for its Lumia Windows Phone 8 range, and the company is announcing a beta of its “Glance Screen” software on Monday. Glance Screen works as a clock for the standby screen that also provides battery level notifications and a double-tap to wake feature to activate a phone. The feature will always show the clock, even when the device is not in use, and also includes a night mode for when a phone is used in the dark. If the functionality of Glance Screen sounds familiar, that’s because Nokia has taken the feature straight from its old Symbian phones — a platform it dropped in favor of Windows Phone.

GetGlue’s recently expanded social efforts on mobile platforms have been available solely to iOS users so far; today, it’s their Android friends’ turn. A fresh update to the check-in app brings Android users the personalized guide for movies, sports and TV shows. The second screen presentation receives a similar overhaul: it’s easier to tag friends or chat with them, and individual shows now have a slew of news and media on offer.
