Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga 11S, the true successor to the Yoga 13, is finally on sale

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Yoga 13 has been one of the most popular Windows 8 machines, combining an ultrabook’s design and specs with a rotating, back-bending touchscreen. But the smaller Yoga 11 was underpowered by comparison, running Windows RT on an ARM processor. As of today, though, Lenovo is rolling out an alternative: the Yoga 11S, which replaces the 11′s Tegra chip with an Intel one and runs Windows 8. Lenovo has started accepting orders for the 11S on its site, and they’ll soon be available online at Best Buy. The base model costs $ 799.99 — about $ 250 more than the current price of its RT counterpart — and comes with an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 display, 4GB of memory, a 128GB SSD, and a Core i3 processor, upgradeable to a Core i5 or i7….

Xperia Z goes on sale at the US Sony Store for $630, Xperia ZL gets a price cut

Americans wanting one of 2013′s Sony flagships have had access to the Xperia ZL for awhile, but they’ve had to chase down an importer if they wanted the glass-backed chic of the Xperia Z. Sony has quietly put that dilemma to rest by offering the Xperia Z through the US Sony Store. For $ 630, locals can get an unlocked version of the flagship in black, purple or white, albeit only with HSPA+ 3G for carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile; there’s no LTE to be found. Those who do want 4G speeds won’t have to pay a premium, however, when Sony is selling the LTE-equipped ZL for the same $ 630. While neither deal will be quite as tempting as subsidized phones at major carriers, those willing to pay full price for Sony gear can now afford to be a little picky.

PSA: Samsung Galaxy S 4 now on sale at Canadian carriers

Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy S 4 hasn’t been as coordinated as the company would like, but it’s making some amends with today’s launch of its flagship phone in Canada. In one fell swoop, most of the larger Canadian carriers are now offering the 16GB model for a typical $ 200 on a 3-year contract. Bell, Rogers and Telus (as well as their sub-brands) are covering much of the country, while more region-specific carriers like Eastlink and Videotron are also joining in. Carriers like Mobilicity and Wind Mobile aren’t yet included, however, and supplies are known to be tight — we’d ask about stock before making a trip to the local store.

LeapFrog’s LeapReader pen teaches reading and writing, on sale in July for $50

With its latest device, LeapFrog’s continuing to fight the good fight: teaching kids essential skills through the power of consumer electronics. LeapReader’s a sort of spiritual successor to the company’s Tag line, maintaining the reading tool’s pen-like form factor, while adding writing to the equation. The device continues to read out words and sentences, adding in the ability to trace letters and write them out on its special paper. LeapReader encourages kids to trace the lines of letters and then try things on their own, after a couple of goes. The pen’s got enough space to hold 40 books or 175 song, which can be played through an on-board speaker or via a headphone jack on top — and you can also play books purchased for your Tag device.
Interested parties will be able to pre-order the $ 50 LeapReader on June 12th. It’ll be hitting retail locations and LeapFrog’s site early the following month, with a few months to spare before back to school rolls around. The pen’s targeted toward kids aged four to eight (and, thankfully, is designed to only write on designated books) and will come in pink and green. Provo council approves fiber network sale to Google, but city must front $1.7 million

Provo, Utah’s plan to sell its cost-plagued fiber network to Google has been approved by the municipal council, meaning it’ll soon become the third Google Fiber city. However, while still not receiving any money upfront as earlier reported, it’ll now have to advance $ 1.7 million in equipment and engineering costs not part of the deal before, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. In exchange, each Provo resident will get a free 5-megabit internet connection for seven years and Google will have to upgrade the network to connect all the city’s homes. It’s not quite free, however, as the city’s 120,000 residents must still pay a $ 39 million bond for building the network — meaning they’ll shell out $ 3.3 million for each of the next 12 years.
