ROLL IT: Vintage Volkswagen Crumpled Into A Sphere

This is the 1953 Volkswagen Beetle exterior that was crumpled into a sphere by Indonesian artist Ichwan Noor. I think we can all agree it makes a powerful statement about how fun it would be to push that thing down a hill.
He got his idea of this piece from his personal perception that objects are products of a “transportation culture,” which induced hints and signs of spiritual emotion.
For this sculpture / installation, real parts from VW Beetle ’53 is used as raw materials, and combined with aluminium and polyester to form this majestic sphere measuring 180 x 180 x 180 cm.
Great, now I want a sphere car. And by sphere car I mean one of those flying bubble cars from The Jetson’s. *puts hand up for a high-five* Awwwww yeah, somebody around here knows what I’m talking about! Right? Somebody. Somebody in here is going to give me a high-five. No? Screw it, I’m taking this high-five OUTSIDE, somebody will appreciate it. You sir — high-five if you love boobs.

Amtrak to roll out high-efficiency trains with regenerative braking (video)
Some of us look at electric trains as efficient transportation almost by definition, but that’s not entirely true when they consume a lot of power and give little back. Amtrak is about to strike a better balance now that it’s close to receiving the first of 70 high-efficiency Siemens ACS-64 trains destined for routes across DC, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. Each engine centers on a regenerative braking system that can recover up to 5MW of energy, much of which goes back to the power grid. The machinery is smarter, too: it can self-diagnose problems and mitigate the impact until repairs are possible. Commuters won’t immediately notice the difference when ACS-64 trains reach the rails between this fall and 2016, but there should be important behind-the-scenes savings. Amtrak reckons that the new vehicles could lower energy consumption by 3 billion kilowatts in the long run, which might help both the company’s bottom line and local utilities.

Lick This, Tootsie Roll Owl!: Dinosaur Eyeball Lollipops

This is a line of creature/dinosaur eyeball lollipops from Etsy seller designerlollipop (of Eye of Sauron and galaxy lollipop fame). Six cotton candy flavored pops will set you back $ 13 and are the perfect thing to add to a Halloween punch bowl provided you can get them to float eyeball-side up and nobody accidentally chokes on one and tries to sue you and it’s even more annoying because you purposefully didn’t INVITE that dickbag to your party but he still managed to come as somebody’s plus-one. Can you tell I’m speaking from experience? It sucks, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to settle this thing out of court with a ninja sword.

Uber vows to roll out service where it has ‘tacit approval,’ with precautions
If you hadn’t gathered, Uber’s app-based taxi service isn’t always welcome wherever it goes. The company is tired of that fighting just to maintain its business, so it’s defining its expansion policies through a new white paper. Deployments will occur in regions where Uber sees “tacit approval” from regulators — in other words, areas where there hasn’t been direct legal action against competing services for at least 30 days. Just in case authorities change their minds, the company plans to go “above and beyond” commercial licensing requirements, including a $ 2 million insurance policy on trips and more stringent background tests. While Uber would much rather have explicit permission to operate as it sees fit, the strategy could have the firm venturing into territories where competitors with unlicensed drivers have (seemingly) free rein.

FBI to roll out $1 billion public facial recognition system in 2014, will be on to your evildoing everywhere
They’re watching you — or at least will be in a couple of years. That’s when the FBI is gearing up for a nationwide launch of a $ 1 billion project designed to identify people of interest, according to the New Scientist. Dubbed the Next Generation Identification (NGI) program, the high-tech endeavor uses biometric data such as DNA analysis, iris scans and voice identification to track down folks with a criminal history. The FBI also plans to take NGI on the road literally by using public cameras to pick faces from the crowd and cross check them with its national repository of images. Let’s just say this facial technology isn’t going to be used for lighthearted Japanese vocaloid hijinks or unlocking your electronic device. The use and scope of NGI, which kicked off a pilot program in February, will likely be questioned not just by black helicopter watchers but privacy advocates as well. Facial recognition has certainly been a touchy issue in privacy circles — something Facebook learned firsthand in Germany. Meanwhile, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is already raising concerns about innocent civilians being mixed up or included in the database. Naturally, the FBI claims that the NGI program is in compliance with the U.S. Privacy Act. On the positive side, at least they didn’t name it the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System.

As Forbes reports, the company’s Bastian Schafer has actually been working on a brand-new concept airplane for the last two years with additional Airbus designers– one that would largely be “printed” utilizing a hanger-sized 3D printer. “It would need to be about 80 by 80 meters,” he told Forbes, including that such a thing “can be feasible.” According to Schafer, 3D printing could possibly not just cause some significant cost savings, but also enable parts that are 65 percent lighter than those made with typical manufacturing techniques. Naturally, the concept airplane itself is even a showpiece for a raft of additional brand-new modern technologies, consisting of a transparent wall membrane, a 100 percent recyclable cabin, and “morphing” seats that might collect body heat from passengers. You can get a peek at just what the airplane may resemble in the video presentation after the break.
