Nielsen to use watermarks to enhance local channel rating accuracy

Nielsen to use watermarks to enhance local channel rating accuracy

While we’re enjoying our preferred programs in HD, it’s easy to forget that they live and pass away by scores, and those ratings aren’t always collected with the most recent innovation. In an effort to enhance the sample dimension and precision of scores for local TV channels, Nielsen is beginning to present a hybrid technology including watermarks and return information from supporting pay-TV company’s set-top boxes, like DirecTV and Charter. The first three markets to obtain the upgrade are St. Louis, Dallas and Charlotte, with 17 yet to be announced markets to follow in 2013, and at last, the remaining 190 about 2 years after that. The system will certainly work in parallel with the older Regional Individuals Meters and Diaries for three to 6 months and will lay the groundwork to collect scores for online, tablets and additional platforms. All the inside business details and more are in the release after the break.

The very light, very electric, very efficient Edison2 eVLC scores 245MPGe rating

Edison2 eVLC

After winning the X-Prize, Edison2 decided the next logical step for its Very Light Car was to put an electric engine in it. Well, what is now known as the eVLC has been put through the EPA-certified ringer and come out boasting a jaw-dropping 245MPGe. Using the latest, more stringent, 5-cycle EPA tests the strange looking vehicle posted a miles-per-gallon equivalent almost 250-percent that of the Nissan leaf. The four-passenger eVLC also scored an impressive 114 mile range on its tiny 10.5 kWh battery (the Leaf gets 117 miles out of its 24 kWH battery) and sucked down a full charge in six hours from a standard 110v socket. For a few more details check out the PR after the break.

Angry Birds nets 50 million downloads, still not enough for a three-star rating

And yet the pigs go marching on. Rovio’s Angry Birds is just over a year old now, and in that time it’s racked up 50 million in downloads, with 10 million of those from Android. An impressive number in its own right, and that puts it in a very elite group of gaming franchises that counts Bejeweled (50m) and Legend of Zelda (59m) among its members. (Membership includes fancy jackets and fezzes.) Our guess is that includes the iOS “Lite” version, which does downplay the milestone, but with new versions coming to PC, Mac, and the big three game consoles still on stores shelves — as well as a sequel — we doubt that asterisk will matter for long. Watch your ever-propagating back, Tetris.
