Inside Google’s quest to build the Star Trek computer

Star_trek_jj_abrams_large

A lot of companies are invoking Star Trek these days, from Makerbot’s Replicator to the Tricorder Project, but Google seems to have taken it one step further. In Slate, Farhad Manjoo delves into Mountain View’s preoccupation with the omniscient, disembodied on-board computer that’s been a Trek hallmark since the ’60s. Apparently Google has adopted the computer as an ideal of human-computer interaction for Search. So far, the result is an increased emphasis on speech recognition and machine understanding — the skills a computer would need to carry on a conversation — as a way of expanding what a search engine can do. It’s a striking example of pop culture influencing modern tech, and good context for whatever’s unveiled at Google’s…

A perfect match: PC game designers and the quest for compatibility

Making games for computers is apparently similar to churning out sausage. For the most part, customers are privy to the final yummy-looking plan, give or take the periodic wandering bug that chooses to crash their gaming spread. Underneath all that luxurious, juicy meat, nevertheless, is a healthy helping of puzzle meat. This consists of the amalgamation of hours upon many hours of the proverbial blood, sweat and tears piled up by the modern-day craftsmans who ply in the game trade. At the top of their list of issues? Making sure a game works across the plethora of computers that grow rapidly out in the wild.

With the sector essentially settling on NVIDIA and ATI/AMD nowadays, the narrowing of card selections to two brands has actually made working on compatibility “a bit much easier” than it utilized to be, stated Travis Baldree, president and lead engineer for Runic Games. Note he said “a little much easier” not “a cakewalk.”

“Compatibility is always the most significant difficulty– it isn’t a new problem at all,” Baldree said. “The sheer number of permutations of cards, drivers, gadgets and third-party software– and their unanticipated interactions with one an additional– can be a trial to handle. “

Seagate completes purchase of LaCie in quest to become king of the hard drive hill

Seagate completes purchase of LaCie

The final price may end up being more than the initially proposed $ 186 million, but Seagate has successfully acquired a controlling share of LaCie stocks. The provisional price of €4.05 per share could increase to €4.17 if Seagate manages to accumulate 95 percent of the company’s stocks in the next six months. As of now, however, it hold just shy of 65 percent, enough to take control of the French manufacturer. With LaCie and its valuable consumer business under its belt and Samsung’s SSD expertise, the move to reject a Western Digital take over is looking better and better. After all, consumer choice is the engine of capitalism and now Seagate has more than enough ammunition to take on WD and its Hitachi properties. Check out the PR after the break.

The Authors Of Space Quest Are Back With Another Adventure

Dome_Postcard_1024x768

If you’re an older gamer, you will remember the holy trinity of Sierra RPGs – King’s Quest, Space Quest, and Police Quest. All three of these games used something called “imagination” and “storytelling” to immerse early gamers in an Ad Lib sound card-induced gaming coma.

Now you can re-live those heady days with a new game by the makers of Space Quest, Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe (aka “The Two Guys from Andromeda”). Their new game, called SpaceVenture, is a refresh of the old Sierra series and promises spills, chills, and horrible jokes. It’s getting funded on Kickstarter as we speak.

The best part? They hired the original voice actors to spice up the game including Gary Owens, the voice of Space Ghost, and Ellen McLain who plays GlaDOS in Portal 1 and 2. Talk about your crossovers.

The game will cost $ 15 for early pledgers and runs on Macs, PCs, iOS, and Android. The $ 30 tier gets you beta access to the game and a soundtrack download.

The game is halfway to its goal with 15 days to go, so get pledging, space cadet.

‘Space Quest’ creators reunite for new space adventure game

Guys From Andromeda screencap

If you’re familiar with Sierra On-Line’s classic adventure games, you’ll know the names Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy. Under the guise of “The Two Guys From Andromeda,” the pair were responsible for creating Sierra’s comedy-adventure series Space Quest, and on their newly-launched website, the duo have revealed that they’re teaming up for a new game. Details are slim at the moment, with the announcement simply detailing that it will be a space adventure — or Spaceventure, as they’re dubbing it — that will see them return to their old genre stomping grounds while taking advantage of the ways in which gaming has changed since their latest outing. If you’ve ever wanted a chance to work with the duo, you’re in luck there as well: a jobs…

Square Enix Announces Online RPG Dragon Quest X For Wii And Wii U

Picture 8

The Tokyo Game Show 2011 is just ten days away, but Square Enix preferred to hold a separate press conference in Tokyo to announce their next big game, Dragon Quest X [JP]. Perhaps the biggest surprises, after months of anticipation, are that the tenth installment in the 25-year old RPG series will be an online RPG and available on both the Wii and the Wii U.

The full title of the game is “Dragon Quest X: Awakening of the Five Tribes Online”, with Square Enix planning to release it next year on the Wii (a date for the Wii U hasn’t been fixed yet). Players will be exploring the same world on both consoles and can transfer game data to their 3DS and share it with other players via Streetpass.

This is the first official screenshot:

Square Enix hasn’t revealed too much as to what the game will actually be about, but it looks like players can form parties with others online, choose between five races and explore the five continents of a world called Astortia (for offline players, there will be NPCs, too). Unlike Dragon Quest IX and VIII (which were created by Level-5), X is being developed by Square Enix alone.

As previous Dragon Quest did make their way out of Japan, you can expect X to hit the US and other places after the Japan release, too (even though no official announcement has been made yet).

Here’s a first (unofficial) trailer in Japanese:

Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Deep Quest 3000m Diver Watch Hands-On

The popularity of dive watches means that there are always going to be lots of new ones each year. One of my favorite new ones for 2011 is from Ball, and it is the Engineer Hydrocarbon Deep Quest 3000m diver. I will just call it the “Ball 3000m” diver for short. This super diver is water resistant to 3000 meters and carries Ball’s signature cool engineered looks. Chunky and legible, it shouldn’t be too expensive to boot.

OLPC XO-3 debut delayed till February as the quest continues for an ‘unbreakable’ screen

You’ll read about many a wonder at CES this January, but you can cross the OLPC XO-3 off the list — One Laptop Per Child founder Nicholas Negroponte told PC World that the slate’s debut has been pushed back roughly 45 days, until the middle of February instead. Whether the Marvell Moby-based tablet turns out to be a sexy, paper-thin device or a chunky contraption wasn’t discussed, but Negroponte did have a simple explanation for the delay — he needed a suitable surface to cover that probable Pixel Qi touchscreen. “The issue has been really finding an unbreakable material,” he said, hinting that “it may be glass or some flavor of glass,” rather than plastic as originally planned. Might we suggest a taste test at the Corning laboratories, Mr. Negroponte? We hear they have a Gorilla that does quite nicely. Video after the break.
