Kaleidescape’s online video store officially opens, promises Blu-ray quality downloads
Kaleidescape launched its online offering in beta late last year, and now it’s officially open, becoming what it claims is the first store to provide “internet delivery of Blu-ray quality movies.” The Kaleidescape Store goes beyond other 1080p services (Vudu, iTunes, Xbox and PSN come to mind) by promising the disc-equaling higher bitrates, extras and lossless audio options they don’t have. There’s no streaming to be had here, only downloads, with file sizes we saw ranging from 23GB (Austin Powers) to as much as 55.4GB (Inception) and everywhere in between.
While the store is only built to work with Kaleidescape’s high-end disc-playback systems — these usually start in the thousands of dollars, and you’ll need M-Class hardware for HD — it currently offers movies from Warner Bros. with an Ultraviolet copy attached, so buyers can play them back on mobile devices through apps such as Flixster and Vudu. Ultraviolet support also means $ 6.99 upgrades of DVD purchases to Blu-ray-quality HD, and potentially disc-to-digital type features later. Naturally, anyone interested will need an internet connection with a generous / non-existent bandwidth cap, but we imagine that’s not out of the price range for these niche owners. Still, it does provide an idea of the difficulty others like Sony and Netflix will face when trying to digitally distribute feature films in 4K to a wider audience. Check out a few screens of the store in the gallery, and the Random Thoughts blog link below for firsthand impressions from a beta tester.

Tim Cook downplays possibility of larger iPhone, cites quality, app trade-offs
With the sudden glut of 5-inch (and larger) smartphones hitting the market, one may wonder if Apple plans to introduce one of its own. In response to a question on today’s earnings call, CEO Tim Cook maintained his stance against such a move because of his unwillingness to make tradeoffs in areas like resolution, quality and app compatibility caused by such a devices. He stated specifically that Apple would not ship such a phone “while such trade-offs exist”, leaving just enough wiggle room for a future announcement where it can claim all those issues have been solved.

Check It Out Lifeloggers: First Memoto Camera Prototype Photos Show Impressive Image Quality
The Memoto is a tiny camera that you wear which takes a photo every 30 seconds and automatically publishes it to an on-line service. It ’ s a dedicated lifelogger ’ s dream, if there is such a being out there. Now, the Kickstarter-funded gadget has flaunted its first official photos in a post and companion gallery uploaded today.
The photos from Memoto are taken from a working Memoto prototype, and they haven ’ t been touched with post-processing software, the company keeps in mind. It likewise guarantees to modify color saturation (to enhance it, which is what the children nowadays like in their elegant smartphone pics), and the exposure will additionally get some modifications to account for darker lighting environments. Memoto also prepares to refine sharpness and compression before the Memoto ships.
From what they ’ ve provided, I ’ d say the Memoto team is being excessively hard on itself: these pics compare favorably to a whole lot of smartphone cameras out there, even if they ’ re a little smaller sized in regards to resolution than most at 5 megapixels. Considering you ’ ll have 2,880 images over the course of a full 24 hours if you stick with the Memoto ’ s default setup of one picture snapped every 30 seconds, it ’ s probably for the finest that these are 5 megapixel (which is more than adequate for web resolution).
To recap for those who didn ’ t participate the Kickstarter project, the Memoto is simply 36x36x9mm, and attributes GPS on board to log the location of images. As soon as you plug it into a computer system, it links to the Memoto service and uploads the images. It likewise has a built-in accelerometer to help it correctly orient images no matter exactly what the angle, and it has space on board for 4,000 images. Apps for iPhone and Android let you see your cloud-stored photos anywhere you are.
Memoto might make or break itself based on image quality, and these first images from a production prototype are promising because regard. The business sadly won ’ t make its preliminary projected ship date of March, however wishes to start automation in April. Ideally those hardcore lifeloggers out there can somehow manage for an additional month without documenting their every waking minute.

Sounds Quality: Spaghetti That Cooks In 8-Seconds

Allegedly 8 Second Spaghetti from Royal Chef can cook in boiling water in 8-seconds. How, I don’t know, presumably because it’s already been cooked (or made from 100% unnatural, cancer-causing ingredients) and you’re just heating it up. Kind of like how SpaghettiO’s are ready to go STRAIGHT FROM THE CAN. Just pop the top, stab a fork in there, and cross your fingers you get a mini-meatball. Speaking of — the last time I ate SpaghettiO’s one of the meatballs had something hard in it. I was going to spit it out to see what it was but I was afraid I might get grossed out and turned off to SpaghettiO’s and they’re really important to me so I just swallowed it. If I had to guess though I’d say it was a tooth.

Google Play Books gets high quality read aloud, pinch zoom, recommendations
If you like having your classics read to you by your handheld device but don’t care for the normal robot-stuck-in-a-well tones, Google Play Books has actually been updated with a more dulcet option. The “review aloud” function (which has been around for a number of variations, despite Google stating it’s new) now has a high quality voice choice, which just works if you’re connected to the net. We offered it a whirl ourselves, and it’s now far more bearable to hear “Oliver Twist” or other flowing text books, thanks to a more natural seeming voice– as heard in the audio file after the break. In addition, Google has added pinch or double-tap zoom choices, text editing features for notes, individualized referrals and “various bug fixes and performance improvements.” To provide it an appearance (or listen) for yourself, check the source for more details.

Kaleidescape Movie Store opens with Warner and UltraViolet, promises Blu-ray quality and extras

We got a peek at Kaleidescape’s digital shipment plans at CEDIA previously this year, but now it’s thrown open the doors of its shop, letting users of its systems purchase and download flicks, no messy (and lawsuit-entangled) disc changers necessary. The Kaleidescape Store is currently providing movies by Warner (around 3,000 movies and 8,000 TV episodes), and befitting its high-end stature, it’s bring a little extra over numerous various other offerings. According to the business it’s secured a contract guaranteeing all the extra material from the retail discs are readily available too, and with video and audio quality “equal to Blu-ray Disc and DVD” at 24fps 1080p, and with Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA lossless audio soundtracks.
Furthermore, it’s consisted of UltraViolet access for most titles purchased in the shop, with plans to offer a disc-to-digital conversion solution in the future. Presently, all content in the shop is standard definition, but HD is apparently on the way in very early 2013. Owners of the systems will require the most recent kOS 5.0 update to access the store, where movies are priced similarly to other digital flick stores. Look at a news release and demo video after the break, or see the link below for some hands-on impressions and access to the store itself.

Workers at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou factory strike in reaction to new iPhone 5 quality standards
Unbox that shiny new iPhone 5 only to find it ruined with scratches and blemishes? Great news: Apple is asking Foxconn to adhere to stricter quality demands for its crown jewel handset. Not so great news: employees at the firm’s Zhengzhou factory are striking over the demands. According to China Labor Watch, 3 to 4 thousand workers stepped off the production line to protest the new requirements, which just enable a 0.02 mm look problem. “it’s difficult under such strict quality demands,” composes Sina Weibo user and Foxconn worker Yefudao. “A 0.02 mm look problem is currently beyond that of our vision. With such a requiring task, worker mental pressure becomes so immense that they have to vent it.”
China Labor Watch states that the problem stems not just from the greater quality needs, but the reality that employees are being asked to fulfill them without receiving the exercise needed to do so. The circumstance hasn’t broken out into a riot, but a dispute between line workers and quality control inspectors apparently sparked a battle that led to residential property damages, injury and some hospitalization. Production lines have actually briefly been frozen by management while Foxconn deals with the scenario.
