Sony Sells 8 Million Moves, 50 Million PS3s Worldwide

Things are going great for Sony. It settled that icky business with GeoHot, and now it’s flying high on the sales of its PS3 and accessories. The Move, which came out last September, has now sold 8 million units as of April 3. Compare this to Microsoft’s Kinect, which sold a cool 10 million units as of early March.

The Sharp Shooter, the little gun-thing for the Move that has no relation to the Bret Hart maneuver, has a 40 percent attach rate with sales of Killzone 3 at “key retailers.” Who are these “key retailers”? C’est un mystère!

Oh, and there’s now 50 million PS3s out there worldwide.

Just a sales tidbit, is all.

And slightly unrelated, I’ve also noticed that the console versions of Portal 2 have leaked, but it’s PC gamers that are killing gaming, right? (Wrong.)

PS3′s summer 3D firmware is all fun and games… and no Blu-ray movie support?

If you want you and your loved ones looking like the family pictured alongside this text, sitting in front of the TV gazing at 3D dolphins emanating from you PlayStation 3 through your television console, your best bet is to envision Ecco, not Flipper.* According to TechRadar, Sony has clarified that the summer firmware update to enable 3D applies to games only, and that 3D Blu-ray movie support will come with a second update due out later this year. We haven’t been able to confirm the announcement ourselves, but suddenly, that freebie copy of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D isn’t looking so tantalizing.

* Hypothetically speaking, of course. We have no confirmation on a 3D version of Sega’s Ecco the Dolphin or Season 3 of Flipper, featuring “The Most Expensive Sardine in the World.”

Older PS3s losing ‘install other OS’ option in Thursday’s firmware 3.21 update

Bad news, Linux fans. The older PlayStation 3 consoles are losing one of the features they could tout over their Slim successor. Firmware 3.21 is coming out this Thursday, April 1st, and its major raison d’être is to kill the “install other OS” option. (This is “not an April fools joke,” as the PlayStation Europe blog clarifies.) “Security concerns” is the cited reason, although we’re sure that doesn’t make you feel much better — no one likes the loss of a feature, even if it wasn’t being used. Those who wish to keep Yellow Dog or Fedora running can opt to not upgrade, but skipping out means losing the ability to access PlayStation Network and play games online, among other things. DARPA enthusiasts notwithstanding, we can’t say we know many people still running Linux on their console, but if you count yourself among the few and proud, our condolences. Them’s the breaks, but hey, at least some of you still have PS2 compatibility.

PS3′s Torne DVR adapter gets moved up to March in Japan

PS3's Torne DVR adapter gets moved up to March in Japan, still never elsewhere

Well, look at that. After a suite of delays and a confirmed launch in May, the Torne DTV DVR adapter for the PS3 (OMG, TLA overload) is actually getting released two months ahead of schedule. It’ll ship on March 18, to be exact, which just so happens to be the birthday of a certain Engadget editor — a certain editor who certainly won’t be expecting one of these as a present, as it’s highly unlikely that this device, or the all-inclusive bundle with a 250GB PS3, will ever see American shores. Meanwhile those in Japan can expect to pay ¥9,980 ($110) or ¥42,800 ($466.52) for the “limited edition” bundle, which we hear makes a lovely unbirthday present.
