Boost Mobile launched a Mobile Wallet app and service today at CTIA 2013 with an interesting twist in that it is tied to a Visa Prepaid card. Boost Mobile customers simply hit up a store to get signed up, download an app onto their handset and once funds are added to their account can use them in a wide variety of ways. From sending money via the app to people in 135 other countries, the ability to pay more that 3,500 billers nationwide, top up your prepaid account and using the included Visa debit card any money in your account can be accessed via that card as well. The app also makes use of your handset’s camera with its Quick Check feature — which is coming soon — allowing an account holder to snap a photo of a check and submit it using the app to have the check’s value added to your mobile wallet once approved — which is nifty, if you don’t use a bank we suppose. There are no month-to-month fees for the service but each bill you pay will cost some $ 2 and climbs depending on how quickly you need the payment made against the account. The service launches in Los Angeles, San Diego and parts of New Jersey today with rollout to all markets expected by the end of the year.

Earlier this year, Verizon announced some new 3G prepaid plans for $ 60 and $ 70 dollars that offered 500MB and 2GB of data, respectively. Now, it looks like the company has silently bumped those allotments up to 2GB and 4GB without touching the price. Android Central reports that the changes go into effect immediately for those with existing plans, but new customers won’t get hold of the new rates until June 6th.

It’s a nice bump, but you can probably find lower prices and higher caps elsewhere, although your best option will depend on the coverage in your area. But in the future, as more and more of Verizon’s traffic gets pushed onto its newer LTE network, we expect the company to keep milking its existing 3G infrastructure with…

We can’t say that most attempts to replicate the landline experience with a wireless link have panned out — Verizon Hub, anyone? AT&T is wagering that it can overcome some of that hesitance with new prepaid tiers for Wireless Home Phone. Those who plug their wired phones into the $ 100 cellular hub can now pay only for those times they want pseudo-traditional service, whether it’s $ 20 per month for unlimited US-wide calls or $ 15 for 1,000 minutes of international long distance. It’s hard to make a case for the new Wireless Home Phone option when many of us already have cellphones, but we can see its uses: think snowbirds or apartment dwellers who want a cheap, traditional phone option that will follow them around for a few months at a time. If you haven’t (or can’t) cut the cord entirely, AT&T may have the next best thing.
