Scrabble board packs RFID technology, broadcasts tournaments online in real-time, costs 20,000 pounds

20,000 Scrabble board packs RFID technology, enables realtime online tournament results

Fast payday loans For Every One

Used to be, the Scrabble app was the techiest way to play the venerable vocabulary game, but the folks at Mind Sports have given the analog version some serious geek cred. In preparation for the Prague Mind Sports Festival, the organizers spent £20,000 building a Scrabble board with integrated RGB controlled LED lighting, nine embedded circuit boards and 225 RFID antennas (one per square). Plus, special game pieces were crafted containing RFID tags. Why? Well, the wireless tech combined with some purpose-built software lets tournament organizers broadcast games online in real-time — the system reads the board in a mere 974 miliseconds. Those wishing to see the ultimate Scrabble system in action can do so when the tournament starts on December 1st, and there’s more info in the PR after the break.

Nokia’s 808 PureView will not be sold by major UK carriers, time to save up some pounds

If you Brits were anticipating using the 808 PureView’s 41-megapixel sensing unit while sipping Pimm’s this summer, well, be prepared to pay a significant cost. We have actually heard from O2, Three and Everything Everywhere (the moms and dad business of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK) that they will not be selling said Nokia tool in the UK, and Virgin Media told us it isn’t in the pipeline “simply yet.” Our friends over at Wired UK have even heard the exact same concern from Vodafone and O2, with a source close to the last laying the blame on Nokia’s “outdated” Symbian Belle system. Ouch. So indeed, this indicates all the major carriers in Her Majesty’s backyard are out of the game; but till we hear back from Carphone Warehouse, there might still be a little chance for keen British mobile photogs to dodge the full & pound; 500 ($ 780) price on Amazon (in comparison to $ 699 on the United States site), so keep tuned.

Hands-On With the Jawbone Big Jambox: 2.7 Pounds of Audio Fury, Available May 15 for $299

photo 1

Bigger isn’t necessarily better but in the case of Jawbone’s Jambox, it might actually work out. Typically known for their Bluetooth headsets and the ill-fated-but-not-quite-dead UP band, Jawbone has figured out what their “cool kids” product is and it happens to be a tiny portable speaker.

But for the second generation version, simply called Big Jambox, the company is cranking up the volume from 10 to 11. While it retains some portability, the Big Jambox is really meant for those instances where you have 20 people posted up near the bonfire or you’re looking for a no-fuss micro system for your home entertainment center. At less than three pounds — 2.7 pounds to be specific — it’s still portable but everything else is on steroids. Jawbone says the built-in battery will last up to 15 hours for continuous playback and 500 hours of standby.

A couple of new features sweeten the deal, including a dedicated pairing button and the ability to pair two devices at once. Expect epic DJ battles to commence with friends and loved ones. The Big Jambox will remember up to eight devices and will actively pair itself with the two most recent devices if they’re available over Bluetooth.

The other big feature is LiveAudio, which was made available for original Jambox owners via an update last year. Jawbone explains it as a three-dimensional listening experience. The easiest way to explain it is that there’s varying levels of sound or depth. They also managed to eliminate Crosstalk, so you hear completely different sounds between the left and right side.

While my time with the bigger, badder Jambox was limited, I walked away impressed by this particular feature because it offered a different listening experience. It’s directional and you have to be planted in its direct path to get the full experience. Otherwise, you wouldn’t know the difference if you’re somewhere else in the room.

We’ll have a full review in the coming days.

Pre-orders begin May 1 with units in store by May 15 with a $ 299 price tag.

New Year reveler crafts Kanye-approved EL Wire glasses, light up as the bass pounds (video)

The bar-laden spectacles that Kanye West popularized have just been reborn, and dare we say, they’re harder, better, faster and stronger. YouTube user ch00ftech decided to borrow a few good great ideas while adding in a few twists of his own, resulting in the creation of EL Wire Kanye glasses that actually light up when the beat pulses. There’s a deep, deep dive into the technicalities down in the source link, but for the 99 percenters in attendance, the video just below says it all.

Honda’s ASIMO robot sheds a few pounds, gets all autonomous on us (video)

We’ve already seen it dance, sing and read minds, but Honda’s ASIMO humanoid has now taken that one great leap into decidedly more dystopian territory. The revamped bot, pictured above (and apparently doing its best Herman Cain impression), was unveiled today in Japan, sporting a streamlined physique and scarily adept mind. In fact, Honda claims that its bot is now less “automated” than it is “autonomous” — all thanks to new behavior control technology that allows it to move and make decisions on its own, independent of human operators. Its external recognition capability and set of onboard visual and auditory sensors enable it to rapidly process information about its environment, which the ASIMO then uses to plot its next move. Combining long- and short-term sensor data, the droid can predict human movements and automatically recognize voices or gestures. Because of this, Honda says, the ASIMO could be more easily integrated within social environments, and peacefully coexist with its human prey counterparts. Physically, meanwhile, the robot’s looking svelter than ever, having shed a full six kilograms. It can now run at a maximum speed of 9 kilometers per hour, jump up and down for as long as it wants, and even hop on one leg, should it ever need to. Plus, its hands are now more dexterous than ever, thanks to new independent finger control functions that allow it to handle the most delicate of tasks — like pouring you a stiff one after work, or before your inevitable demise. Check out more images in the gallery below, or hop past the break for a video and accompanying press release.

Land Crawler exTreme robot carries 175 pounds of human

Human-carrying (or human-assisting) robots come in all shapes and sizes, but we haven’t seen anything quite like this so-called Land Crawler exTreme bot. Weighing in at just 27 pounds, the robot can apparently carry a person weighing up to 175 pounds (providing they have good balance), or it can simply amble around on its twelve legs all by itself. Practical? Maybe not. But it is quite a sight to behold — see for yourself after the break.
