Google-built media player hits the FCC, reveals only a Hitchhiker’s Guide reference
With much of its information obscured it’s hard to say what Google has planned for this new device revealed by its FCC filing, but the model number at least indicates someone has a sense of humor. Called an “H840 device” and rocking the model number H2G2-42 (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – 42, the ultimate answer to the question of life, the universe and everything) it has WiFi of the 802.11 b/g/n varieties, but that’s all we know for sure. The natural question is whether this is a proper revamp of / follow up to the failed Nexus Q project, particularly with its appearance coming so closely after the unveiling of its Google Play Music All Access subscription. Of course, Google has no shortage of mysterious device projects in store, we’re hopeful this one will reveal all of its secrets soon.

EA to end Online Pass program, cites player disapproval
Remember EA’s Online Pass program? If you’ve ever purchased one of the company’s games used, it probably rings a bell. The system was devised in 2010 as a way for the company to collect revenue from used game sales, requiring players of second-hand software to pay an additional fee to unlock multiplayer content. Now, EA says the program has run its course. “Many players didn’t respond to the format,” the company told GamesBeat. “None of our new EA titles will include that feature.” The industry still isn’t completely sure how to handle used game sales, but at least this unpopular program is at an end.

Amazon releases standalone Cloud Player music app for PC, Mac version coming soon

Amazon is today launching Cloud Player for PC, a desktop app that lets users natively play any music they’ve purchased from or stored with the online retailer — no web browser required. Any songs, albums, and playlists that have been added to your account are fully accessible from the standalone app, and offline support is also baked in; Amazon says Cloud Player for PC can be configured to automatically download MP3s or transfer any new tracks in your library to the cloud, much like its existing Music Importer tool for PC. Like before, users can import a maximum of 250 songs to Cloud Player before they’ll need to upgrade to a more spacious tier. (Songs purchased from Amazon MP3 and digital copies of AutoRip albums don’t count against…

Hulu Plus for Android update improves player UI, expands compatibility
The Hulu Plus app for Android has a new update, and the most noticeable change is that its player UI to closer match the one on its website and in iOS. It also brings features from those platforms like 10 second skip back and a preview thumbnail in the scrub bar. Hulu also claims it’s rebuilt “for optimized awesomeness” with reduced buffering, better playback, and more device compatibility. Finally, in a move that should make plugging in your HDMI-out a little easier, it supports remote control navigation from game controllers and “similar peripherals.” A picture of the new UI is above, check out the old version after the break or just hit the source link to try it out for yourself.

Insane Japanese Dance Dance Revolution Player

This is a video of some guy in Japan made of nothing but Redbull and uncut cocaine playing Dance Dance Revolution, or the Japanese equivalent of Dance Dance Revolution. He’s quick. If I was ever challenged to a duel I would pay this guy to take my place and kill my enemy. And, if I couldn’t come up with all the money he wanted for the job, I’d have to go with plan B: flee the country, move to South America, grow a beard, and only respond to ‘Mr. Monchichi, banana magnate’.

Baseball player ‘steals first,’ confounding all scorekeeping software

On Friday, Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura performed an act of baserunning lunacy so unforeseeable that play-by-play software couldn’t even process it, says baseball historian David Vincent. ESPN.com offers a detailed account of the bewildering play, in which Segura tried unsuccessfully to steal third, ran back to second (now occupied by teammate Ryan Braun), and seemingly got tagged out before sprinting all the way back and “stealing” first. Later in the inning, Segura tried, unsuccessfully, to steal second, but because the scorekeeping software wasn’t equipped to handle the case of a runner going backwards around the bases, the official box score shows Segura being tagged out at third.
