Developer teases iOS apps running on BlackBerry PlayBook, stops short of releasing the software (video)
Sometimes, it’s much more rewarding simply to appreciate a technical achievement rather than worry about its legal or practical implications. That philosophy couldn’t be more true for the travails of businesscat2000, whose handiwork has made it possible to run iOS apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The developer likens his project to WINE, which doesn’t do hardware emulation, but rather relies on a custom set of APIs to make the wheel go round. While the software was initially greeted with a heavy degree of skepticism, businesscat2000 has since risen to the challenge of CrackBerry, and not only has he personally demonstrated the software, he’s shown its ability to run a wide array of apps — one specifically at the behest of CrackBerry, which belongs to its sister site, iMore. For the moment, the implementation isn’t perfect, particularly if the app relies on Apple’s UIWebView or CoreData frameworks. For those curious, businesscat2000 has yet to make the software publicly available, although he’s expressed a bit of interest. It remains to be seen whether this project will ever see the light of day, but feel free to peek the videos below and scour the CrackBerry forums, where you can learn more of the technical details and dream of what may never be.

BlackBerry PlayBook Update Adds Improved Android Compatibility
The RIM PlayBook by just received a developers update that adds some interesting new Android functionality to RIM’s tablet. This new version now supports Android apps running in their own windows, improving compatibility with the general Android app universe.
From Crackberry:
Portrait support for Email, Calendar and Contacts
Improved folder support including IMAP folder support
Full device encryption is now supported, so that the whole device and personal partition can be secure.
Screenshots are now saved in lossless PNG format.
Each Android app will now run in its own window. This greatly improves the user experience and consistency among the other application runtimes.
Access to the Camera hardware is now supported for Android apps, allowing many more application types to work on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet.
In-App Payment is now supported through the BlackBerry Payment SDK, so Android applications can include virtual items for sale in their applications.
This version is butting up against the incoming BB10 OS that will soon appear on phones and tablets, but, as the Verge notes, the BB10 PlayBook should be able to run apps written for previous OS versions.
Oddly, this version seems like a bit of a dead end but it’s nice to see Android functionality getting fleshed out more concretely.

LTE BlackBerry PlayBook Coming This Year, Says RIM CEO
RIM is keeping the PlayBook party going. While speaking at a BlackBerry World breakfast with RIM CEO Thorsten Heins stated the company plans to launch an LTE-enabled PlayBook by the end of the year. However, the CEO didn’t detail the projected release date, price or available wireless carrier.
This is a smart move for RIM. Rather than spending the time and resources producing another tablet, RIM is instead concentrating efforts on making sure upcoming software works on existing hardware. During a recent trip Rim’s Waterloo campus, the company made it clear to TechCrunch that it is very much committed to bringing BlackBerry 10 to the PlayBook.
The PlayBook has actually aged quite well. The computing hardware and screen is still competitive to current tablets on the market. BlackBerry 10 would likely make existing PlayBook owners very happy although by the time the OS hits later this year, companies and consumers might shy away from the older tablet. But as long as the 4G PlayBook isn’t tied to a two-year contract like other carrier-sold tablets, RIM might be able to sell several to those still addicted to their crackberrys.

iPad 2 Vs BlackBerry Playbook- Speed Test
C-NET! Real. Get ready, ’cause it’s coming. By “it,” I’m of course referring to the deluge of tablets ready to flood the market. Make no mistake, in the next two to three months, consumers will have more tablet options than they know what to do with. This week sees the launch of RIM’s long-awaited BlackBerry PlayBook. This tablet is targeted at an arguably esoteric market, and includes the expected features aimed at that business demographic, but it also includes features that average shoppers are looking for. Check out the full review for more details, but before you do that, read the PlayBook’s speed results in their entirety. Testing Site-loading speed is one of the simplest things to test, and it’s a test many users can immediately relate to. I’m a greater fan of real-world tests, like going to actual, real sites, than of synthetic benchmarks. We used three different Web sites for the tests: CNET.com, CBSNews.com, and GiantBomb.com. Each tablet was connected to the same closed network with no other devices on it, with the router about 5 feet away. We considered the test to begin the moment we pressed Enter and ended the iteration when the blue progress bar on each tablet disappeared. We used iOS 4.3.1 for the iPad 2; the Xoom is using Android OS 3.0.1, with the Chrome browser. Although in the video you’ll only see one iteration for each test, we actually ran each test several times; over those runs we got results consistent with what you’ll see here. Also, we cleared …

Better Late Than Never: RIM Preps Refreshed PlayBook With 4G
The BlackBerry PlayBook is about to get the gift of 4G. That is of course if a random leaked image and FCC documents are believed. And why not? Even though the PlayBook is almost a year old, RIM is actually selling more now than ever.
The PlayBook is a fine tablet. The OS is competent and slick. It packs all the standard BlackBerry apps and functions. Much as the iPad is a great iPhone companion, the PlayBook should be the BlackBerry user’s tablet of choice. The PlayBook is a fine tablet now. But it didn’t launch that way.
The PlayBook launched last April to rough reviews. Common issues cited were the buggy OS, lack of 3rd party apps, and, strangely, RIM failed to include a calendar, email, and BBM functions. The tablet went nowhere and launched with a thud. It wasn’t until a drastic price cut and the addition of these missing features some seven months post launch that the PlayBook started moving. RIM saw a five fold increase in PlayBook sales last quarter.
A 4G PlayBook makes sense in a strange way. RIM built the PlayBook to work tightly with its enterprise platform. In theory the PlayBook should work superior to the iPad in a corporate environment. Since RIM is actually now managing to sell PlayBooks, a 4G version should make traveling shower hook salesmen rather happy, since it can remotely dial the home intranet without relying on WiFi. Sure, these people might want an iPad, but IT departments can buy two PlayBooks for the price of one iPad and these tablets can be managed alongside the company’s existing BlackBerrys.
Unfortunately a 4G PlayBook would flop in the consumer market like its WiFi brother. Even if it’s priced aggressively, the PlayBook lacks the sex appeal, and more importantly, the sheer amount of functions found on the iPad. Consumers looking for a cheap tablet will still look at the Kindle Fire or perhaps the rumored Google Nexus Tablet.
RIM will likely launch the PlayBook the first week of May at its yearly BlackBerry World conference. The company needs to have a strong showing and a 4G PlayBook shows RIM is at least moving albeit rather slowly. If RIM is to recover, they need to get products on the market in a timely and complete fashion; that’s very clear. However, the company also needs to protect its revenue streams, and refreshing an old tablet with a relatively inexpensive addition like a 4G radio is a smart way to exploit the new demand and those still afflicted with the crackberry addiction.

BlackBerry PlayBook with ’4G’ out and about, wants to know where you put its SIM
Jim Balsillie might be on the outs, but it looks like his once boastful pet-project — a BlackBerry PlayBook with integrated cellular wireless — is finally coming to fruition. Per CrackBerry‘s forums comes the above snap of the Canadian slate donning a SIM card slot, nary a month after we first spotted the company’s HSPA+ and LTE tablets pass through the FCC. That also lines up nicely with a previously leaked roadmap, promising a summer arrival. Will the mythical 4G-wielding PlayBook ever make it to market? Or like it’s WiMax brother, will it never be given the chance? While you ponder that, more pics await at the source.

Question by : what is a difference between an ipad and a blackberry playbook?
i want to buy an ipad or an blackberry playbook? but what is an tablet ? and which is better?

Answer by Marcel
A tablet is a laptop like device. It is usually touchscreen. It is easy to carry. Between the iPad and the Blackberry playbook, I think the iPad wins. It has millions of apps and games and the touch screen is more responsive. You can also jailbreak it to unlock tons of tweaks and stuff. The competitor of the iPad is The samsung Galaxy tab, which you could consider to buy, but I still think the ipad is better. There are rumours of iPad 3 saying that it would be announced in March so you should wait to buy the newest generation iPad.
