Above LA? Pure smog. Some days you cannot even see taller people’s faces.
The “Pi In The Sky” skywriting occasion needed five planes flying in sync in a loop over 100 miles long to fit it all in. The piece was produced by an artist called “Ishky,” working with Endurance Design, for the 2012 Zero1 Biennial.
There’s a video recording of some of the creating going down after the jump, which, if I had anything to do with it, would have checked out 3.1415 PEN15. “You enjoy those things.” They’re so unusual!

Taking A Huge Hit On Design, Samsung Doubles Down On Chips, Places $ 974M Into ASML
Samsung Electronics has been knocked hard on mobile phone design advancement in the last couple of days, but in just what may be a spectacular display of diversionary techniques, it is additionally increasing down on yet another substantial part of its business — chipmaking. Today, the Dutch semiconductor appliance producer ASML revealed that Samsung would be investing close to $ 1 billion — yes, more or less the exact same quantity for which the jury in California held it accountable over Apple patent violations on Friday — towards R&D and an equity stake in the company. In doing so, Samsung will certainly be joining Intel, which took a 10 % stake in ASML in July for $ 2.1 billion.
Samsung ’ s interest in ASML — along with one more investor, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. ’ s – was registered at the time of the Intel investment, and today ’ s announcement makes a point of saying that Samsung will certainly “ commit ” the funds. That suggests although the bargain isn ’ t signed, sealed and delivered, Samsung was keen to get some news out quickly that aimed to it coming out battling in the wake of the concern delivered on Friday.
ASML describes itself as “ one of the world ’ s leading service providers of lithography systems for the semiconductor sector. ”
The equipments it makes, which employ a strategy called severe ultraviolet lithography, can help speed up the production more powerful and smaller sized semiconductors — a necessary component of smartphones, tablets and additional devices. As Samsung mentioned in its internal memo to staff members in reaction to the jury verdict, Apple is just one of its most essential clients for this part of the business.
Under the regards to the “ dedication ” revealed today, ASML says that Samsung Electronics will place 276 million ($ 345 million) into ASML ’ s research and development program over the next five years. The company had actually targeted overall backing of 1.38 billion for that R&D program, and it states that has now been satisfied.
Independently to this, Samsung will certainly also investing 503 million ($ 629 million) for a 3 % equity stake in ASML. In total, Samsung, Intel and TSMC have 23 % of ASML, comparable to 3.85 billion, which will get returned to shareholders in a share buyback scheme.
Offered that Samsung needs to pay the full penalties suggested by the jury, that that it follows through on its ASML financial investment, that $ 2 billion potentially will weigh heavy on revenues — and investor self-confidence — in a typical quarter, especially if there are any injunctions attached to the first of those. In Q2, the business made $ 6 billion in operating revenues — basically, the news of the last couple of days would have erased one-third of that.

Switched On: Trading places
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
If widespread rumors hold true, the coming weeks will see two of the most successful tablet vendors invade each other’s screen size turf. Apple, which once rebuked the 7-inch tablet as unfit for normally proportioned human hands, appears ready to try its own hand at an iPad rumored to be on the larger side of the 7- to 8-inch range. Amazon, which lagged its bookselling rival Barnes & Noble in bringing out a color tablet, stands ready to introduce an infernal successor to the Kindle Fire that may include a display that is close to 9-inches or larger.
It’s not quite the first ride along the screen size escalator for either company. For Apple, a smaller iPad would fill in the iOS screen size gap between the iPhone and iPad. For Amazon, also rumored to be working on a phone, a larger color tablet would revisit the ground it explored to lackluster results with the Kindle DX. That product hasn’t kept up with even e-paper-based e-readers with advances such as touchscreens and side-lighting, both of which are found in the latest Nook Simple Nook.

Google Places for iOS becomes Google+ Local, adds voice search in the process
It was just a matter of time prior to Google + Resident started spreading out to the mobile space, and iOS looks to be its first landing spot with a rebadge of the Google Places app. Apart from attaining harmony with Google’s quickly swelling social cosmos and letting us examine Zagat scores for close-by establishments, the update slips in the same voice search that Google has actually had in its primary Google Search app: we will not have to browse for the best Vietnamese cuisine with that archaic keyboard. The refresh makes it similarly uncomplicated to identify locations that typically aren’t directly close by, and there’s a tighter login procedure to keep that bar search history away from prying eyes. If you’re a social traveler with an iPhone or iPod touch, Google simply offered your expeditions a shot in the arm.
