OneNote update improves custom pens, syncs Office 365 notebooks
If you got a Surface Pro or another pen-friendly Windows 8 tablet, you’re likely excited to wring every ounce of efficiency from that stylus. Microsoft hears your call. It simply updated the OneNote app for Windows 8 to give pen modification a shot in the arm: a new radial menu makes it easier to pick a pen’s color and weight while conserving favorite pens to quick-access slots. Whether drawing’s your thing, Microsoft has also streamlined syncing with support for pulling in Workplace 365 note pads, not simply those kept on SkyDrive. Passionate note-takers only need to grab the upgrade from the source link.

Samsung pens letter detailing ‘potentially serious issues and problems’ with nano-SIM vote

The long, winding road to selection of a nano-SIM standard took another turn today: Samsung has filed a letter with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) of “concerns expressed and actions taken by Samsung in relation to the recent vote by correspondence for the selection” of a final design.
The phrase “recent vote by correspondence” is of particular interest: just last week, Motorola and RIM had filed a compromise design meant to appease Apple while still allowing trayless “push-push” mechanisms in phones, suggesting that debate was still raging internally and that a final vote might not take place until the next meeting of the SIM working group at the end of this month in Japan. Previously, though, SIM maker…

Neither Pen Nor Pencil: Write Endlessly In Metal
One of the pleasures of writing in pencil is the friction of two solid materials in contact. One of the delights of writing in pen is that you can write continuously without having to stop to sharpen your stylus. Writing in metal, while expensive, provides some of the benefits of both while exhibiting its own unique beauty.
These two (that’s right, two) different metal pen manufacturers come to us by way of champ design blog Dornob. Both models work on the same principle: a tiny amount of metal alloy transfers from the pen to the page. Unlike pencil, it can’t be smudged with your hand, and unlike ink, it doesn’t need to dry. The amount of alloy for each stroke is so tiny that the pens are expected to last a lifetime without needing to be refilled or replaced. You can sharpen the tips for a finer point with a little sandpaper.
Each company takes a slightly different approach. The Inkless Metal Pen by Vat19 goes with a full stainless-steel barrel. Their marketing department, as you can see from the video above, also has a sharp, playful, dudely sense of humor. (The word “awesome” gets thrown around a lot, and there’s a Scrooge McDuck reference.)
Grand Illusions goes a little more highbrow with their Metal Pens. They have two short versions (including one that can be worn as a keychain) and a Beta Pen which comes with a full-length extension in either black or silver metal or cherry-stained wood.
Grand Illusions also appends a short history on writing in silverpoint: “In the Medieval period, artists and scribes often used a metal stylus in order to draw on a specially prepared paper surface. Generally known as Metalpoint, or Silverpoint when the stylus was made of silver, artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer and Rembrandt all used this technique.” My friends, this is music to my early-modern-loving ears. (Luckily, you don’t have to rub your paper with pumice to get these 21st-century pens to make an impression.
The alloy in the Vat19 pen (at least) has trace amounts of lead, so it’s not so good for kids. Both are targeted for designers, lefties (who often have to deal with smearing or smudging ink/graphite as they trace their hand across the page), and geeks who like even their handwriting to be all shiny. (Note: the writing isn’t actually very shiny, more kind of a matte titanium, but you can pretend).

Listen To A Drawing With The Rec & Play Pens

Strange things happen when you get two designers collaborating. Case in point: Yuri Suzuki and Oscar Diaz teamed up to make the rec & play pens. These devices allow a person to “record” a drawing using a special type of ink (and the record pen), and then play the drawing back as a sound using the playback pen. The recording pen actually uses ink that is similar in composition to cassette tapes, meaning that you can record a drawing, and then play it back over and over again. I’d consider this to more of an experiment showing the convergence of sight and sound, rather then anything practical. If you want to see the pens in person, they’ll be on display at the kk outlet in London starting on September 3rd.

German Multi-Tool Pen Engineered to Outlast its Owner

The classic Messograf pen from German company Cleo Skribent is the pen that could send me back to ink on paper. The metal-barreled ballpoint packs an array of extras into its slim body that would put many multi-tools to shame.
Along its shiny sides you’ll find a four-inch Vernier caliper (with scales of 0.1mm and 1/16-inch), a metric screw-thread scale and a tire-tread depth-gauge. Press on the end and, of course, the pen pops in and out.
Not only that, it is made of chromium-plated brass, and will therefore outlast not just my current crop of iPads and other gadgets, but probably all such devices I will ever own. Hell, it’ll probably even outlast me.
It’s not new, but design like this doesn’t have to be. The price? A mere $28, or a mere 40-cents per year for the whole of a 70-year life (plus refills).

Jetpens: Japanese pens for fun and profit
My dad has been hounding me to get him some gel pens so when I was in Japan two weeks ago I bought him three of them. I should have just hit up Jetpens. This odd little webstore features all sorts of Japanese gel pens along with accessories like notebooks, brush pens, and erasers. Domo arigato, Internet!
Cooltools notes:
Japanese pens are simply the coolest pens on the planet. Whether for writing notes, manga, or drawing, Japanese pens are the best. The finest are .18mm while the widest are brush pens that will allow you to practice your kanji. They also come in colors that will never see the inside of a Staples or and Office Depot.
The pens are pretty pricey – about $3 per – but these are the greatest pens in the world (TM) so you could do worse.
