Panasonic remembers the best ways to earn money, states $ 667 million revenue last quarter

Panasonic remembers how to make money, thanks to weaker yen and costcutting

Just as Sharp offered a slightly more enthusiastic glance at its balance slab this morning, so too does Panasonic have something worth commemorating: a quarterly net profit of 61.4 billion yen ($ 667 million) in the last trio of months of 2012. That’s not big for a business of this stature, naturally, and it’s additionally real that underlying sales slipped by 8 percent, with the step to benefit mostly coming from the weaker yen and previous cost-cutting workouts. However, compared with the minimal $ 164 million it made at the start of 2012, and the ego-crushing $ 9.7 million loss it suffered in its preceding financial year, no one because big HQ is likely to be grumbling.

Panasonic FZ-G1 Windows 8 Pro and JT-B1 Android Toughpad tablets hands-on

Panasonic FZG1 Windows 8 Pro and JTB1 Toughpad tablets handson

Panasonic just revealed the two latest members of its Toughpad family here at CES, the FZ-G1 Windows 8 slate and the 7-inch JT-B1 Android tablet. Naturally, when the company’s offered us the chance get handsy with this pair of chunky monkeys we leapt at the possibility. Each of them have the telltale look of every Panasonic Toughbook and Toughpad– a solidly constructed silver plastic shell with black rubber edges and a girth approximately two times that of its less robust device brethren.

We were shocked to find that the smaller of the two tablets we fondled failed to have Android 4.2 on board. Instead it was loaded up with Ice Cream Sandwich, which the slate’s dual-core OMAP silicon kept humming smoothly during our brief time with it. Like its 10-inch brother or sister we saw last year, its matte screen mutes colors while it reduces glare. While the strap on the back is an optional accessory, we see its appeal for protecting the device in hand, and completely expect it’ll be a popular add-on for business consumers.

On the other hand, the Windows 8 slate’s screen was a bit brighter and more lively, and its Center i5 had us swiping with the OS’s tiles more smoothly than its smaller stablemate. Build quality was, of course extremely solid, however lead to a tablet with significant heft. If you ‘d like to see the two Toughpads in action, a pair of videos wait for after the break.

Panasonic reveals ToughPad FZ-G1, the ‘world’s thinnest and lightest’ rugged Windows 8 tablet

fz-g1 panasonic

Panasonic has announced the Toughpad FZ-G1, which it describes as the world’s thinnest and lightest rugged Windows 8 tablet. It has a 10.1-inch IPS display, Ivy Bridge processor, and 3G or 4G connectivity, along with features suited to work in the field like a replaceable extended battery, cradle dock, 360-degree handle case, and digitizer pen.

It’s also 120cm shock resistant, and while Panasonic is calling it “thin and light” you’ll unsurprisingly be taking a bit of a portability hit to get that added protection; physically, it looks very similar to the Android-powered ToughPad A1 that we saw last year. The company also announced the new ToughPad B1, a 7-inch version of the A1, and is working on a 7-inch Windows 8 rugged tablet along…

Panasonic P-02E smartphone appears in the FCC flesh, looks Japan-bound

Panasonic P02E smartphone appears in FCC flesh, looks to be Japanbound

Earlier this month, a supposed Panasonic P02-E smartphone appeared on an NTT DoCoMo Japanese server log, but such scant evidence required more than a few grains of salt to swallow it. Now, the ever-reliable FCC has exposed the gadget to be an actual thing, and placing the two sources together would make it a 5-inch, 1,920 x 1080, Android 4.1.2 smartphone with a quad-core, 1.5 GHz APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, along with LTE and NFC capacity. Don’t get too ecstatic if those specs float your watercraft, nevertheless– judging by the retractable TV antenna, NTT DoCoMo origins and general Panasonic elusiveness in the west, it looks to be intended directly at the Japanese market only.

Nikkei, Reuters claim Panasonic may quit European cellphones after its second bruising

Panasonic Eluga underwater

When bitten, twice shy. Panasonic backed out of the European cellphone market in 2005 and gave it a 2nd possibility with its Eluga smartphone this spring, but both Nikkei and Reuters hear that the company is currently considering its second withdrawal. A hard economic climate and a currently successful cost-cutting effort (not to discuss an uninspiring item, if we’re sincere) can have Panasonic exiting Europe before its financial year winds down at the end of March. Of the 2 as yet unconfirmed sources, Nikkei is going even further– it believes that Panasonic is thinking about either a partnership to validate its Japanese business otherwise waving bye-bye to mobile phones altogether. Nothing’s specific until Panasonic states so. If there’s any type of fact to the tale, however, we could possibly see one even more casualty in a rapidly thinning smartphone market.
