Chrome adopted by US State Department as optional browser, IE8 prepped for mid-March release (video)

State department workers frustrated with their dated web browsers will get some relief very soon. At the latest town hall meeting, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was questioned on the update roll-out of secure, state-certified browsers and — prefacing with a chuckle — she announced that Google’s Chrome had started already begun its roll-out last month. For now, it’s an optional web browser for those not enamored with Internet Explorer — the only browser compatible with the full breadth of the Department of State’s IT system. Governmental workers that are fans of that big blue ‘e’ also got some good news — they’ll be seeing the roll out of Internet Explorer 8 from March 20th, with the department planning to leap over version 9 and straight into the loving embrace of Internet Explorer 10. Judging by the whoops and applause during the announcement (included after the break), we wouldn’t be shocked if those public servants hugged their updated PCs outright.

CoPilot GPS app includes free offline maps with optional traffic data and turn-by-turn navigation, headed to Android and iOS

ALK (that’s the company behind CoPilot Live) is no stranger to GPS apps, but it’s starting afresh this week with a new application offering more featuresfor free. CoPilot GPS, which will be available on iOS and Android, goes the way of Nokia Maps in that it stores all those millions of points of interests offline, so you don’t need an Internet connection to calculate directions. Download the free version and you’ll also get some requisite social networking integration, walking and driving directions, the ability to choose from up to three routes and built-in Bing and Wikipedia search functionality. The app also matches Google Maps with voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation and 3D maps, but you’ll have to shell out $ 19.99 as a one-time in-app payment for the privilege. Real-time traffic updates are also an option, but that’ll cost you an additional $ 9.99 for a 12-month subscription. According to ALK, the app will be available for iOS and Android in early to mid March, but in the meantime we’ve got a handful of screens below to give you a taste of what to expect.

Evigroup drops SmartPaddle Pro price to €699, optional head-tracking feature watches you intently

Are you and all of your friends flocking to buy that thing shown above at full retail price? Exactly. Evigroup’s SmartPaddle Pro tablet is now available from €699 (under $ 900) for the base 10-inch configuration with no GPS, no 3G and a 32GB solid-state hard drive. Additional configurations are available with 1 or 2GB of RAM, and the high-end configuration, which includes 3G and GPS goes for under $ 1,500. The SmartPaddle Pro, with all the trimmings (including head-tracking), retails for around $ 1,530. Other specs include a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, five hour run time, mini-HDMI port and capacitive touchscreen, none of which seem to justify the (still bloated) new price tag. Click past the break for the full video, which is apparently set to an Enya album.

HP refreshes the Pavilion dm1 with a new design, optional Intel ULV Core i3 CPU (video)

Eight months is dog years in the world of consumer electronics and yet, we still have a soft spot
for the HP Pavilion dm1, a dirt-cheap 11.6-inch ultraportable that ushered in AMD’s long-awaited Fusion chips. HP just announced the second-gen model, a refresh that includes some spec bumps, as well as a new design and some software add-ons (because we loved the bloatware load so much in the original!). Getting the performance boost out of the way, it’ll now be offered with an ultra-low voltage Core i3 processor, while the Fusion options now include the E-300 and E-450 chips (until now, it’s been sold with the E-350). The AMD versions will start at $ 399 with the Core i3 model fetching $ 599 and up. For some reason even HP doesn’t seem able to explain, the Intel version will come with an external optical drive, but the AMD models won’t. At least you know you’ll be getting more than Intel’s brand name for those extra two hundred bucks. The version with the black, non-reflecting lid will go on sale “this fall”, with a glossier charcoal number available sooner. Until then have a gander at our hands-on shots and walk-through video.

Toshiba Qosmio X770 gaming laptop surfaces, 3D optional

Toshiba’s Qosmio X500 gaming laptop got a modest update earlier this year in the form of the X505, but it’s now getting a proper successor with the company’s new X770 model. In addition to boasting a more metallic enclosure, this one actually shrinks the display from 18.4 inches to a slightly more portable 17.3 inches (still 1920 x 1080), but it expectedly doesn’t compromise much in terms of other specs — the standard config offers a Core i7-2630QM processor, 8GB of RAM, 1.25TB of storage from a pair of hard drives, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M graphics. Also available is a separate X770 3D model, which adds a 3D webcam to the equation, along with a pair of active shutter glasses. Look for both to be available in the next few weeks, with prices starting at €1,300 (or roughly $ 1,850).
