Former Google attorney is the head of the US Patent Office’s Silicon Valley branch

US Patent and Trademark Office logo

Back in July the United States Patent and Hallmark Office revealed that it would be opening three new branches– and former Google lawyer Michelle K. Lee is heading up the Silicon Valley workplace. Google’s previous deputy general counsel and head of patent approach, Lee invested nine years with the business prior to leaving earlier this year. According to Reuters, Lee confirmed she had accepted the position throughout a conference today at Santa Clara University.

Lee officially started her brand-new position on November 5th, but prior to that had actually been serving on the USPTO’s Patent Public Advisory Task force– a team concentrated on evaluating the office’s performance and policies. Throughout her time at Google, she often voiced concerns about the …

Report: HP’s South Korean offices raided over alleged price fixing

Image

Korea Times is a publication that isn’t shy of the odd bold statement and today it’s claiming that HP’s South Korean offices were raided on suspicion of price-fixing deals made with IBM and Oracle. The country’s Fair Trade Commission seized documents, computer records and questioned employees over alleged price-rigging on public-sector contracts. A company spokesperson said that the visit was routine, while FTC officers refused to comment about ongoing matters, but what is clear is that if any wrong-doing is found, the case will be turned over to prosecutors with the aim of commencing criminal proceedings for those responsible.

Objet260 Connex makes 3D printing cheaper, feasible for cramped offices

Waiting for a 3D printer you can actually — you know — afford? Well, unfortunately the wait isn’t over, but we’re certainly getting closer with Objet’s 260 Connex. The latest offering can still print two materials simultaneously like its more expensive brethren, but is more compact and apparently more “attractively priced.” Exactly how frugal, the firm didn’t say, but can one really put a price on something that can churn out chunks of Iron Man armor? Yeah, we didn’t think so. No word on when it’ll ship, but with more than sixty materials to print with, you had better start brainstorming those prototypes now. Video after the break.

Source Claims Next-Generation Xbox Incognito In EA Offices

Update: EA comments, calling this story a “total fabrication.” Makes sense. Of course, it would also make sense if they were trying to keep a secret.

With Nintendo officially announcing their next console in June, there’s a little pressure being put on Microsoft and Sony. Sony, of course, has other things to worry about right now, but some think that Microsoft will use this lead time to put together something relating to its next console. In fact, one source claims that the next Xbox is already out there, just in disguise. They know because they saw one at the EA offices.

Now, two things strike me as unlikely about this. First, who’s to say this isn’t just a new dev box with integrated updates like Kinect support and so on? It’s packaged like a normal PC, so might it not just be that as well? I mean, I don’t think the tipster is an idiot or anything. I’m just saying a little mistaken information goes a long way towards creating rumors. There are a number of things it could be, and to characterize it as a next-gen system might be taking it too far.

More importantly, though, I don’t think Microsoft would rush the announcement just to take the wind out of Nintendo’s sails, especially since their main competitor is really Sony (the “real gamer” market). Even if the system is to launch in 2012 (unlikely), E3 2011 would be too early to give the game away. They’ve emphasized that the Kinect is adding a year or two of life to the system, and I doubt they’d hamstring themselves by making a premature successor announcement just to hassle Nintendo.

But do I believe there’s next-gen stuff at EA? Sure. I bet Microsoft has finalized some ecosystem-level stuff and has sent it to the majors in order to give them plenty of time to develop for launch. But I’m guessing the actual silicon won’t be settled for another year at least.

Survey shows the many advantages of virtual offices (beyond the ability to work sans pants)

Those of us who do almost all of our work from the comforts of our homes will not be surprised by what follows, but the rest of the world should take note. A new survey of directors of 600 small to medium sized business reveal that upper-management sees major benefits of so-called “virtual office” work environments. So what are those advantages? Well, no shockers here, chief among the perceived advantages are lowered costs, flexibility for employee (such as the ability to hire people in different geographic locations), and cutting down on pollution and commute times and costs. In fact, over half of businesses reported a cost savings of around $ 10,000 a month by using the “virtual” environment. So… welcome to our world, world!

Google’s South Korean offices raided by police as part of Street View investigation

Google may be trying to make nice and play ball with all the thoroughly outraged governments affected by its unintentional WiFi snooping with Street View cars, but that apparently hasn’t been good enough for South Korea. Earlier this morning, Google’s Seoul HQ was subjected to a raid and search operation by the cyber crime unit of the Korean National Police Agency, due to suspicions that it may have collected and stored data from WiFi networks without authorization. So it’s the same old complaint the rest of the world’s been dealing with, only the zeal of the methodology seems to have been turned up to 11. It’ll be interesting to see if this raid uncovers anything more salacious than what we already know; we’ll keep you posted if it does.

[Thanks, D. Kim]

The Star Trek crew beams into Microsoft offices

To boldly go where no man has gone before…And occasionally beam into Microsoft. Microsoft has an amazing Star Trek sculpture in the lobby of their Studio D office, that continually gives the appearance that Kirk, Spock and the rest are materializing. How cool is that?

The illusion is simple. Beads. The installation was inspired by the classic 1967 episode “Mirror, Mirror,” and was created by Devorah Sperber, an artist known for creating illusions using unconventional materials. This artwork is made up of spools, chenille stems, and semi-translucent beads.

Though Apple fans would say that the crew is beaming UP rather than DOWN, having found no intelligent life.
