Hands-On With the MoviePeg for iPad

Fast payday loans For Every One

The original MoviePeg stand for the iPhone was a pocket wonder. The little chunk of plastic had a notch chopped from one edge into which could you insert your iPhone. The MoviePeg would then form a kickstand, firmly propping up the phone for movie-watching duties. Even our ever fussy NYC Bureau Chief, John C Abell, bought one and continues to use it.

The new MoviePeg for iPad has a tougher job. Not only does it have to deal with a much bigger, heavier iDevice, it has to work in four different orientations, either upright or laid-back in both landscape and portrait formats. For the most part, it does a good job. In one area it shines, and in another it hardly works at all.

The new MoviePeg comes in two parts made from thermo plastic elastomer. They join together by male and female circles in the flat edge, which lock firmly in place. Pull them apart and then slip the iPad into the slots for a firm fit. Well, almost.

Because of the compound curve that is the iPad’s back, the slots only match the shapes when in the correct spot. Put them too near to the corners and they work, but the contact isn’t snug. An inch or so in from the edge is enough. The MoviePeg also seems to limber up after a little use, gripping better after the first few hours. Maybe they need to grab a little finger-grease to get started?

The MoviePeg is outstanding for typing. It holds the iPad very firmly at around 30-degrees and you can tap away in comfort, or easily read at the breakfast table. Slide the pegs down and tip the iPad a little steeper and it remains firm, perfectly good for movie-watching and more than adequate for poking the screen without knocking it over. In landscape mode, then, the MoviePeg does great.

Switch into portrait orientation and things quickly wobble out of control. Laid-back, it is fine, but try to prop the iPad upright and the stand just can’t cope. So unstable is it that I actually blew it over from over a foot away.

There are a few other quirks. It may be good for typing, but if you want to do this on your lap the unstable base of your flabby legs means things will soon shake loose. Also, grabbing the iPad to move to another room is annoying. You either have to to dismantle to setup, or hope that the pegs don’t drop off as you walk (they will).

If you type or use your iPad on a table, and need a stand that is light and small, the MoviePeg is great. If you watch movies in bed, or need something semi permanent from which grabbing your iPad is easy, or if you do any work in portrait format, it doesn’t work so well. On the other hand, it is so portable and so cheap (£13, or $20) that it’s good to buy and toss in your bag.

Available now, in black and limited-edition Clockwork Orange.

New York City’s Trash-Sucking Island

NEW YORK CITY — The system of pneumatic trash-sucking tubes running beneath the surface of New York City’s Roosevelt Island is either a quirky relic or a glimpse of the future, depending on how you look at it.

A network of 20-inch tubes takes garbage from the island’s 16 residential towers, collecting from every floor, to a central collection point where it is compacted and trucked off the island. It is at once a simple and elegant solution to gathering trash, and an aging and complicated beast that needs a lot of upkeep.

“I can’t run the system right now, I got guys in the pipe. It would kill them,” said sanitation engineer Jerry Sorgente. “We have contractors here from Sweden. They crawl through the pipes, find holes and repair them.”

Wired.com recently toured Roosevelt Island’s trash-sucking system, and followed the path of the trash from start to finish, even catching the Swedes in action along the way.

AT&T Tests Free Wi-Fi in Times Square

nyc

There’s little reason to visit Times Square in New York unless you’re a sandal’n’socks wearing, guidebook-toting tourist (or if you work there), but AT&T just made visiting the tackiest plaza in Manhattan a little bit more attractive.

As of today, AT&T customers can grab free Wi-Fi when not buying helium balloons or miniature Empire State Buildings. This, we presume, is a way to improve the telco’s notoriously bad data performance in several metropolitan centers. The hotspot (singular) is located somewhere on 7th Avenue between 45th and 47th Streets. I like to think of it as being lodged between the McDonald’s golden arches and the TGI Friday’s sat next door. Once you have connected to any one of AT&T’s hot-spots, your phone should remember and flip over to any other AT&T spot whenever it encounters one.

This is AT&T’s first ever free outdoor hotspot, says the Wall Street Journal, and is a trial that could make its way out of tourist hell and into three other cities, and thence possibly into the world at large: Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco would be a perfect spot.

Setting up a Wi-Fi network is presumably a lot less hassle law-wise than getting permission for another cell-tower, and at least AT&T is doing something about its spotty network. It might not be an entirely fair test, though. Do the bridge-and-tunnel folks even have smartphones?

WiMAX will cover one billion people in 2011, coming soon to NYC and San Francisco

WiMAX will cover one billion people in 2011, coming soon to NYC and San FranciscoThought WiMAX was just beaming high-speed internets to a very few lucky technosapiens in far-away lands? Think again! If all goes according to plan, more than 800 million people from the future will be wrapped in its soothing vibrations by the end of this year, and over a billion worldwide in 2011, surpassing expectations. That’s an impressive spread given that Sprint just got things rolling domestically in Baltimore about a year and a half ago. Next up will be stops in New York City and San Francisco, good news for urban folks, but will it be enough to hold off the progression of LTE? Don’t you love a good wireless format war? We don’t.

Interesting Stats on NYC Subway

First a little explanation of the image below.

This image is a graphical representation of the population of Manhattan during the day on the left and in the evening on the right. Notice the dramatic shifts indicating people work there but not many remain in the area after working hours. Further down are some stats from Frumination. Very interesting numbers done to research what it would take to replace the NYC Subway with vehicles.

The report also goes into how the NYC Subway is transporting 1,050 people into the CBD every 6 seconds!

The actual write up can be found here: http://frumin.net/ation/2009/08/whats_capacity_go_to_do_with_m.html
