Next-generation Xbox launch titles include ‘Ryse’ and a new ‘Forza’

Microsoft is working on a number of launch titles for its new Xbox console. One of the first games to launch on the next Xbox will be Ryse, according to multiple sources familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans. Microsoft originally unveiled Ryse at E3 2011, promising an exclusive Xbox 360 release with Kinect functionality. A release has never materialized for Xbox 360 and the company has remained fairly silent about the title’s progress, noting that it was still in development in mid-2012 and again earlier this year. The Verge understands that Crytek, along with Microsoft Studios, has been rewriting the game to take advantage of its next-generation console, due later this year.

Microsoft issues statement apologizing for employee’s Twitter comments on next-generation Xbox

Microsoft has released an official response following a number of tweets from Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth yesterday commenting on rumors that the next-generation Xbox will require an always-on internet connection. The employee — who very likely is familiar with the console codenamed “Durango” — said “Sorry, I don’t get the drama over having an “always on” console,” stating that we live in a world where every device is ‘always-on.’ It’s unusual that Microsoft has seen fit to respond to the tweets, reminding people that “this person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft” and it apologized, stating “we are very sorry if this offended anyone.” Even more curiously, Microsoft hardly makes a gesture at denying the always-on…

Australian police raid next-generation Xbox leaker who tried to sell Durango dev kit

Australian police officers appear to have raided the home of an infamous leaker of next-generation Xbox information. Known as SuperDaE, Dan Henry supplied over 20 next-generation Durango Xbox documents to gaming site Kotaku recently, detailing new controllers, a mandatory Kinect option, and the ability for Durango to run more than one game or application at one time. SuperDaE tweeted earlier this week revealing that police had raided his premises, allegedly alongside an FBI officer and local Australian law enforcement.
SuperDaE supplied The Tech Game with a copy of his warrant, which lists Microsoft, PayPal, and eBay as part of a criminal investigation. The Verge reached out to the West Australian Police and a spokesperson confirmed the…

Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox to arrive for the 2013 holiday season, says Bloomberg

Microsoft isn’t having any type of difficulty offering its Xbox 360 game console even though it’s seven years old– the business just recently reported sales of 750,000 units over the current Black Friday weekend– but that doesn’t mean it isn’t really working on the following generation of the platform. Bloomberg, citing inside sources, is now reporting that Microsoft prepares to release the following generation Xbox in time for following year’s holiday season, likely in the nick of time to exploit 2013′s Black Friday. This shouldn’t come as a significant surprise to anyone that is following the gaming room– both Microsoft and Sony are expected to release next-generation systems following year, and reports of a late 2013 launch for the following Xbox have circulated because at least January …

WhiteMagic: Sony Shows Next-Generation LCD For Cameras And Phones
Sony announced WhiteMagic today, a “next-generation”, 3-inch TFT LCD screen that boasts 1.23M-dot full VGA resolution. What’s special about the display is that it has two distinct modes: if switched to “low power mode”, power consumption of the backlight is pushed down by over 50% to 125mW, with Sony saying brightness in this mode is still comparable to that of conventional LCDs.
When choosing “outdoors mode”, WhiteMagic’s brightness can be boosted from 470 cd/m² to an impressive 1,000 cd/m², while power consumption of the backlight in this mode (300mW) stays about as high as that of conventional screens. By way of comparison: the iPhone 4 reaches a maximum brightness of 500 cd/m².
Sony achieved this by adding a white pixel to the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) pixels and developing an algorithm to correct picture distortion (“RGBW method”).
The company plans to start shipping the first samples as early as October (price: $ 65 each). It expects WhiteMagic to be used in mobile devices, for example cameras and smartphones (even though it’s not a touchscreen apparently).

Video: Fujitsu Shows Next-Generation Color E-Paper
Electronic paper has come a long way, but displaying content in color in a way that makes sense (refresh rate, resolution etc.) is still a problem. One of the bigger companies working on color e-papers is Fujitsu whose FLEPia is among the most advanced devices out there. The FLEPia went through several iterations since its launch in 2007, and now Fujitsu has showcased the latest version last week in Tokyo.
As you can see in the video embedded below, the new device is more of an evolution than a revolution, especially with regard to the refresh rate (0.7 seconds is still too slow).
But they’re getting there: just like the already commercialized FLEPia Lite, the prototype has an 8-inch screen displaying 4,096 colors. At 220g, the new model is 60g lighter than the FLEPia Lite, with Fujitsu saying they also boosted brightness, contrast and color replication.
This video (shot last week by our friends over at Diginfonews in Tokyo) provides more insight:

Source Claims Next-Generation Xbox Incognito In EA Offices

Update: EA comments, calling this story a “total fabrication.” Makes sense. Of course, it would also make sense if they were trying to keep a secret.
With Nintendo officially announcing their next console in June, there’s a little pressure being put on Microsoft and Sony. Sony, of course, has other things to worry about right now, but some think that Microsoft will use this lead time to put together something relating to its next console. In fact, one source claims that the next Xbox is already out there, just in disguise. They know because they saw one at the EA offices.
Now, two things strike me as unlikely about this. First, who’s to say this isn’t just a new dev box with integrated updates like Kinect support and so on? It’s packaged like a normal PC, so might it not just be that as well? I mean, I don’t think the tipster is an idiot or anything. I’m just saying a little mistaken information goes a long way towards creating rumors. There are a number of things it could be, and to characterize it as a next-gen system might be taking it too far.
More importantly, though, I don’t think Microsoft would rush the announcement just to take the wind out of Nintendo’s sails, especially since their main competitor is really Sony (the “real gamer” market). Even if the system is to launch in 2012 (unlikely), E3 2011 would be too early to give the game away. They’ve emphasized that the Kinect is adding a year or two of life to the system, and I doubt they’d hamstring themselves by making a premature successor announcement just to hassle Nintendo.
But do I believe there’s next-gen stuff at EA? Sure. I bet Microsoft has finalized some ecosystem-level stuff and has sent it to the majors in order to give them plenty of time to develop for launch. But I’m guessing the actual silicon won’t be settled for another year at least.

Hitachi Develops Next-Generation RFID Tag

Hitachi subsidiary Hitachi Information Systems has announced [JP] the development of a next-generation RFID tag today. What’s new about it is that the tag withstands the heat of welding: in other words, companies don’t need to drill screw holes anymore to put them into place. Hitachi says that their new tags can be welded into place in just 10 seconds, whereas conventional ones take around 5 minutes to be attached to objects.
The metal tags are sized at 22mm×24mm×5.3mm and are expected to be used in construction machinery, agricultural machinery and equipment, gas cylinders and similar objects.
Hitachi plans to start shipping the devices to manufacturers in Japan and China in July. Each tag will cost $ 6.22, with Hitachi projecting sales to reach up to 1 million units within the next three years.
