If you wish you could tweet during that round-the-block 5K, then Motorola’s latest update to MOTOACTV is for you. The fitness computer will display Facebook and Twitter messages on the device as well as offering more accurate mapping, easier WiFi network setup and more flexible workout planning. Additionally, golfists who plumped for the Golf edition get some more links-appropriate features like tee location options and putt distance-tracking. You can get the update by connecting the device to your computer and Motocast will handle the rest.

Motorola Aims For The Green With MOTOACTV Golf Edition

motoactv_golf_edition_1200

Do you know who Bubba Watson is? I sure don’t, but the internet tells me he’s a three-time PGA Tour winner — that’s right folks, he’s an expert at putting balls into cups.

As it turns out, Motorola Mobility thinks so highly of his skill that they’ve “teamed up” with him for a special golf-geared version of their MOTOACTV fitness gadget.

Really.

“The new Golf Edition of MOTOACTV has features that allows players to make better decisions on the course,” said Watson. Apparently, that includes the ability to track your distance from the green and nearby hazards, keep tabs on scores and stats, and sync your golf records for future perusal and analysis on the MOTOACTV website. Of course, all of the device’s usual fitness tracking features are still present and accounted for.

I was more hoping for something to tell people exactly where and how hard to hit the ball — having never played golf before, I’d appreciate that sort of unfair advantage if/when I ever hit the links.

I’ll admit that at first, this seemed like a very strange move on Motorola’s part. The MOTOACTV is a pretty niche device on its own, but to load it up with some very specific golf features (without even draping it in plaid) seemed to take it to another level entirely. That’s when it sunk in — golf junk can be really, really expensive. At $ 299 (same price as the golf-free variant), Motorola’s sporty little doodad may find its legs among pricey drivers and country club fees.

Motorola’s MOTOACTV gets software update March 9th, brings 40 new fitness activities into the fold

Late last year, Motorola announced its MOTOACTV device for fitness fanatics. Since then, the wrist-mounted gadget got a firmware update for better battery life, and on March 9th it’s getting another fresh dose of code that brings even more functionality. The update adds 40 new custom activities including yoga, handball, skiing and dancing, so you can track all your fitness endeavors individually. The new code also allows users to activate the display with a flick of the wrist (instead of pressing the power button) and configure WiFi connections right on the device. Not a moment too soon, Moto, summer’s closing in and this should help us get that beach (as opposed to blogger) body we’ve always wanted.

MotoACTV update increases battery life, adds screenlock function

Motorola MOTOACTV

When you’ve got an Android-powered super watch on your wrist, battery life is definitely a concern. If you’re a proud owner of the MotoACTV you’ll be glad to hear that Motorola has a software update that, just like the last one, bumps up the battery life a bit. The company now says that you can expect nine hours of outdoor battery life, which is a good sight better than the quoted five hours when the watch was first released. To help you keep tabs on the MotoACTV’s juice, the battery meter will tell you what percent of the battery is remaining, and you can now double-click the power button to lock and unlock the screen. Additionally, you can repeat a planned workout that’s already been started, and auto-run / auto-pause functionality has…

Rooted MotoACTV Brings Web Browsing And Angry Birds To Your Wrist

Fitness watches are one thing, but how about a fitness watch that lets you play a few levels of Angry Birds in between wind sprints? Motorola’s MotoACTV debuted alongside the Droid RAZR not too long ago, and one developer has finally taken it upon itself to unleash its full potential.

The hack comes courtesy of developer Chris Wade, whose past endeavors include the Dingleberry PlayBook root method and the (ill-fated) iEmu project. While he’s best known for his software projects, he’s quite the hardware buff too — before working getting to work on a root process, he felt the need to tear the thing apart first.

Unlike some of the other Android-powered watches we’ve seen pop up in recent months, the MotoACTV actually sports a half-decent spec sheet. During the teardown, Wade found a 600 MHz OMAP 3630 processor and 256 MB of RAM, which provides enough oomph to handle nearly everything Wade threw at it. After he managed to finagle the Honeycomb launcher and Market access onto the little guy (check the video below), the end result was a compelling lilliputian Android tablet.

I’ve got to admit — I always thought that the idea of a fitness-focused Android watch would be a tough sell, but between Motorola’s recent updates and Wade’s new root method, the MotoACTV is shaping up to be a pretty tempting buy for fans of wearable tech.

If you already own a MotoACTV and you’re itching to make your MotoACTV all that it can be, Wade has posted a tutorial for rooting the device on his site. Happy hacking!

Motorola MOTOACTV firmware bump gives you marathon-battery life (video)

Fitness people love to make us feel guilty as they jog past the car, sneering as they watch us eat six double downs in one go. It’s those people who will be happy that Motorola’s Motoactv is getting a firmware update promising better battery life and power-saving settings — including a marathon mode that’ll give you eight hours of accompanied running. You’ll also find additional clock faces and the ability to measure your heart rate even when stationary. You know, with their clear skin and no body fat, maybe they’ve got the right idea and we should give some serious consideration to changing our ways — you know, in January.

MOTOACTV Fitness Tracker To Debut In U.K. On December 1

MOTOACTV_large

Fitness fanatics in the U.K. will soon have another gadget to aid them in their quest for physical supremacy: Motorola has just announced that their MOTOACTV fitness tracker will hit stores on December 1.

The MOTOACTV was overshadowed a bit since it first appeared alongside the Droid RAZR, but it’s a fairly nifty device in its own right. If you’re not familiar with the ACTV, think of it as an Android-based amalgamation of an iPod nano and Sony Ericsson’s ill-fated LiveView.

On top of being able to track workouts, the MOTOACTV can sync with newer Motorola smartphones to display notifications on your wrist, and it sports 8GB of internal flash storage for all those carefully-culled playlists. As a (lousy) runner, the MOTOACTV’s smart music player seems like an especially clever twist: it can determine what songs users tend to listen to when they go all out, and stick those tracks in their own playlist.

Motorola has teamed up with British sports retailer Sweatshop to bring the MOTOACTV to the UK, but those looking to harness the power of Android to support their workouts better start saving up. The MOTOACTV is set to debut with a £249.99 ($ 390.50) price tag, so only serious workout fans need apply.

Motorola Challenges The iPod Nano With MotoACTV Smart Watch

motoactv

In a plot twist not many of us were expecting, Motorola took an opportunity at its NYC press event this morning (where we expect to see the Droid Spyder unveiling) to announce MotoACTV, a new smart watch.

CEO Sanjay Jha announced it has a 600MHz processor, and weighs in at just 35 grams. MotoACTV combines a GPS-enabled watch with a smart music player, which learns songs that make you work harder and plays them more often. The new watch also offers a built-in heart rate monitor (sans the chest strap), and relays every performance stat (including duration, distance, avg. pace, calories burned, and avg. heart rate) back to you through a bluetooth headphone set.

The MotoACTV watch tracks your running, walking and cycling stats outside, with treadmill and step machine stats recorded while you’re indoors. The watch also has an FM radio.

The watch also syncs with your PC, letting you access a dashboard of your performance stats at MotoACTV.com.

MotoACTV will be available nationwide on November 6, with an 8GB version going for $ 249.99, and a 16GB model going for $ 299.99.
