Autodesk Releases 123D Creature, A Tool To Design, Paint, And Print Your Own 3D Monsters
As a fan of monsters and 3D printing, in that order, I was intrigued by Autodesk’s new iOS app, 123D Creature. Aimed at beginning 3D modelers, the app allows you to build cute (or scary) monsters right on your screen by pinching, grabbing, and rotating a lump of virtual clay hanging on a skeleton.
The $ 7.99 app ($ 1.99 for a limited time) is the latest in Autodesk’s line of free 3D apps. The company sells much more expensive and complex 3D solutions like Maya and 3ds max but these 123D apps are designed to allow users with little experience to build objects, paint them virtually, and output mesh files that can be used on 3D printers. You can even order 3D prints of your creations right from the app.
Given the perceived difficulty of 3D modeling, these are an interesting way for Autodesk to sneak their tools into the hands of younger designers who could go on to use the company’s more lucrative tools.
How does it work? Fairly well, to be honest.
I tried the app briefly today and was able to design a pointy-headed little man and print him on my home Makerbot. Sadly his arms didn’t quite make it through the print process but his tiny legs and pin head look just fine. I’m no 3D artist, to be sure, so it was fun to be able to make a cute little being and then pump him out of my extruder in a few minutes. Not only does this give 3D novices the chance to experiment with 3D design, it makes folks with 3D printers happy because of the seamless system for making and outputting mesh files for quick prints.

Watch this: giant Earth robots fight monsters in ‘Pacific Rim’ trailer

.
Hollywood seems keen to turn 2013 into the year of the sci-fi blockbuster, with trailers released up until now for films such as Oblivion and After Earth. The market has yet an additional trailer for us to pore over frame by frame – this time it & rsquo; s Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro of Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth popularity. The trailer shows a globe under assault by huge monsters thanks to a mysterious portal in the Pacific Ocean. Naturally, individuals of Earth develop impossibly large robotics in order to fend off the danger of disaster, however each robotic should be managed by 2 pilots that share a psychological link. It & rsquo; s a sluggish, brooding teaser that could cause some to think of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but the fact is that it & rsquo; s even more of an …

The Last of Us isn’t about monsters but humanity

There was an Uncharted 2 commercial that featured a couple sitting down to watch the game, the conceit being that the player’s significant other didn’t realize it was a video game. While the ad was intended to play up the cinematic nature of the game, it also spoke to the maturity of the subject matter. It said, “Uncharted 2 is a game that you don’t have to be embarrassed to play when your non-gaming husband and/or wife enters the room.”
Naughty Dog’s latest game, The Last of Us, makes the Uncharted series look like Saturday morning cartoons.
After seeing the trailer for The Last of Us during Sony’s presentation last night (you should really watch it if you haven’t!) we had to get another taste of the action — and Naughty Dog didn’t…

Sony brings the Holodeck to life, throws in giant sea monsters for free (video)
The Holodeck is real and there’s no Lt. Barclay to make things awkward. Using a combination of a Steadicam, multiple EyeToy cameras, PlayStation Move controllers, projection mapping, motion tracking, spandex-clad actors and giant rubber sea monster tentacles, Sony Europe, Studio Output and Marshmallow Laser Feast shot three web videos to highlight the immersiveness of movies rented or purchased from the PlayStation Store. Impressively, the shots rely exclusively on visual tricks, with zero editing or postproduction work. Is this the future? See for yourself after the break and relive the joy of the Holodeck without having to interrupt Worf from one of his weird workout routines.

Ridiculous Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory controller gives Steel Battalion fans new hope
If you’re a lover of unnecessarily large and comically styled controllers, chances are you’ve been a bit depressed lately with all this Sony Move and Microsoft Natal talk, tech that could do away with fancy add-ons altogether. But Hori, at least, is continuing to follow the righteous path of giant peripherals with this bodacious add-on for Square Enix’s Wii port of Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory, an arcade game with a name long enough to be worthy of such a mighty gamepad. Sadly, this collectible card game really only requires three buttons: a big red one, a big blue one, and the sword, which is simply pushed downward to activate special attacks. It pales in comparison to the two control sticks, three pedals, and 40 buttons of Steel Battalion, but sometimes it’s the visual impact that really counts.
