Ouya working with Monkey Island and Words with Friends creators, The Cave heading to Ouya
OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman took to the stage at DICE 2013 today to reveal two new partnerships, one with Monkey Island creator Tim Schafer’s studio Double Fine Productions, and the other with Words with Friends creator Paul Bettner. So far, that means both Double Fine’s Reds and The Cave are headed to OUYA, while Bettner’s Verse studio only announced it was working on two unannounced titles. “I believe we’re about to see another disruption even bigger than this last,” Bettner said, referring to his previous work in the mobile game space. “Gamers want the App Store in their living room. OUYA will be the first to deliver it,” he said.
The OUYA arrives in March for Kickstarter backers, and in April for the rest of the world (even later for retail). It’s unclear exactly when Schafer and Bettner’s games will arrive on the Android-powered console, but we’d expect The Cave to be there sooner than later (it’s already available on other platforms).

Monkey Business

An interactive installation by Ralph Kistler & Jan M. Sieber. NEW FACES AWARD 2011, 15th JAPAN MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL MONKEY BUSINESS BONUS TRACK: www.youtube.com “Monkey Business” is an interactive installation where a cuddly toy monkey hangs on the wall like a Jumping Jack and apes the gestures of the user. The system consists of a tracking camera sensor (Microsoft XBox Kinect) on top of the toy monkey for tracking the visitor’s movements, a hidden computer to analyze and convert the tracking data (OpenNI Framework, osceleton, OSC), a programming patch (Processing) to process the data into movement angles and send it to a microcontroller board (Arduino) inside the toy’s body, which controls ten servo motors attached to a metal sceleton and in this way moves the ape’s arms, legs, head and body. The flexible suspension of the ape in combination with fast responding motors allow an astonishing quick-witted behavior and a tempting interaction experience for the user. All technical devices are covered in order to facilitate a direct communication between the visitor and the soft toy. The work reflects in a playful way the problem of real natural interaction and states an ironic comment about the present art business through this iconic monkey figure. Super Monkey Ball on Vita makes levels from camera photos

What’s the quickest way to turn the family friendly fun of Super Monkey Ball into a terrifying maelstrom of blocky, genitalia-fueled nightmarescapes? Sega seems to have unearthed it, announcing that the upcoming Vita release Super Monkey Ball: Tokumori Asobita will include the ability to transform pictures captured with the Vita camera into playable SMB levels. The provided example? No joke — a banana. Really gang? Fresh out of less phallic fruit at Sega HQ?
The Andriasang translation of this promotional page makes no mention of whether the feature will be included in the North American version of the game; however, we do know that it’ll be subtitled “Banana Splitz” stateside, ensuring that — should they be included — grotesquely…

Monkey Island/Day Of The Tentacle/Grim Fandango Vets Raise $1-Million On Kickstarter For New Game

Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert, two of the men behind some of the best point-and-click adventure games of all time including LucasArts classics (and personal favorites) Monkey Islands, Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango, raised about $ 1-million in 24 hours with a Kickstarter project to produce a new game. It’s set the record for the most funding in such a short period of time as well as most backers, with current funding in excess of $ 1.3-million and over 36,000 contributors. Donating $ 15 will get you the game and access to a documentary about the game’s development. I just donated myself, and will spend every waking second until the game’s release refreshing their website until it’s available. *refresh refresh refresh refresh* Hopefully not much longer. “These things take time, dummy.” Soooooooooo — think I have time to pop a Pop Tart?
Thanks to Matty C, Sean, bucknine, Alicia and tombey, who are almost excited as I am about this (you can tell I’m more excited because I pissed myself).

Feet On With Fila’s New Skele-Toes EZ Slide Monkey Shoes
As a fan of barefoot shoes I jumped (not very high, because you don’t get a lot of air with bare feet) at the chance to try out Fila’s new Skele-Toes EZ Slide barefoot shoes AKA the crazy monkey shoes not made by Vibram.
These shoes are marketed as “casual” monkey shoes and are not designed for running. They are, luckily, fairly attractive in a “weird dude who wears barefoot shoes” kind of way but the first thing you’ll notice is that they have four toes instead of five. This is the EZ part of the name and they make them considerably easier to put on and take off. They also make you feel like Fred Flintstone.
They’re quite sturdy, with a thick rubber sole (relatively thick when compared to Vibrams) and two huge velcro straps along the heel and instep. The shoes fit more like sneakers than running shoes which is obviously why Fila is selling these to casual users. Sadly, most of this odd design is intentional. Vibram recently sued Fila for patent infringement and I suspect most of the 2.0 improvements are based on not trying to look like Five Fingers shoes.
I wore these around the neighborhood last weekend and did a bit of biking in them. While I don’t want to equate them with 21st century Crocs, I worry that this style may soon trickle out of the world of high-performance running (and the fat people like me who think barefoot running helps them a bit on their short runs) and into the world of backyard barbecues and 30-something Dads toddling through Disneyland, much as I imagine myself doing in the next few years.
I found the Skele-Toes to be quite comfortable if slightly less abrasively ugly than Vibrams. Fila made these into sports shoes rather than performance foot gloves and while I wouldn’t go marathoning in them they’re fine for treadmills and biking. At $ 60 they’re also a bit less expensive than Five Fingers ($ 80 for the Sprints, for example and few online sales to be found). I’m generally inclined to recommend these to folks who may want to dip a toe (chortle) into barefoot running but, to be clear, these aren’t “performance” shoes. However, for six bills (and these are Filas so they’ll probably go on sale sooner than later), you’ve got some conversation starters, to be sure.
